It IS acceptable to slow down in the grocery aisles, and in business. Doing your marketing on a Sunday afternoon is like walking in the midst of the Arc de Triomphe traffic circle. Dodging hurried shoppers who should be ticketed for speeding grocery carts 🛒 as you avert a collision by yielding a savvy hip maneuver! Like a wild stampede, fast-paced personal shoppers attack the aisles to deliver your goods in that expected timeframe, while many “Civilian” shoppers feel the need for speed and get everything done in 30 mins or less. It’s like a pressure cooker with the lid off-kilter, and seriously contributes to the stress we face in life. We encourage mindfulness, stress reduction for better health, we encourage mental health awareness, and build platforms to help support those initiatives. But, until we actually heed the very basics “Slow Down and Smell the Roses” (in this case the produce!) we’re contributing to the problem versus alleviating it. I encourage leaders in our fast-paced society Amazon UberEats etc. etc., be reminded of, and implement as part of their strategy and mission, to creating a healthier pace and encourage those practices by training and reward programs. If you’re a multi national comms agency working with one of the world’s biggest polluters and oil companies, helping them cover their tracks and greenwash the public… then sorry to burst your bubble but you’re not exactly a “B Corp”. Was so glad to hear the news yesterday about Havas’ B Corp status being revoked due to their work with Shell. Apparently, the agency had been offered the chance to take remedial action and maintain certification, but declined to do so. Speaks volumes about their priorities and ethics. Alternatively, it’s refreshing and reassuring to see B Lab do their job right and stick to their rigorously high standards when it comes to sustainability certification 🌍🌱 They are setting a strong example, proving that a legit sustainability certification has to be earned, not just bought. They are missing up on the type of ad formats they could be running… the messaging that triggers curiosity, desire, social proof, trust & influence. One of the most recognisable brands ever used fraud to grow. This is a story of public shame and an award-winning performance. Heinz leveraged an insight we all know to be true: Restaurants use cheap ketchup and pretend it's Heinz The campaign was so good, it won: • A Clio award. • 3 D&AD Pencils. And, helped Heinz win the Grand Prix in Creative Effectiveness at Cannes Lions. Here's a quick breakdown: • Heinz saw 5 years of decline. • It introduced a creative platform to change direction. • Enter 'It has to be Heinz'. • A creative strategy built around a brand truth & cultural tension. • A strategy so good, it's been running for over 5 years. The 'Ketchup Fraud' campaign resulted in B2B business growth and huge levels of consumer engagement. The best part? It put consumers in the driving seat. Heinz called upon consumers to call out restaurants for committing ketchup fraud 🍅 Brand truth + cultural tension + UGC 🔥 It certainly shows the power of working with a creative agency, kudos to Rethink Toronto for coming up with this one. Finally, agencies are recognising the need for experience, wisdom and connections. Last year was the worst time for myself and so many colleagues in a sea of uncertainty and being ‘over qualified’ for certain roles. As Gareth Moss states in this article - many agencies are seeking senior creative talent to achieve growth in 2025! I was chatting with Chelsea Harding yesterday about a brand I've been wanting to try for ages, only to see it sell out of its best-sellers within the first hour of its Black Friday sale. A brand like this must know how to manage its stock levels during such a huge sales event, right? Our theory - they’re intentionally marking top-selling items as "out of stock," allowing them to still advertise a "sitewide sale" without having to discount their best-sellers. I've now had a closer look and noticed this across multiple brands. It’s "clever" marketing, but not exactly the best experience for a first-time customer 🥲 Have I been missing this trend in past years, are businesses just getting more savvy with each Black Friday, or are they genuinely selling out in 30 minutes? #justagirlwantingtotrygreenspowder

DIFFERENCE MATTERS TO MARKETERS If you've heard that Difference is an out-dated concept, that it doesn't exist, or that all you need to do is to be distinctive - think again. In the UK energy sector, between 2022 and 2023, we found that customer perceptions of Difference predicted 82% of the change in customer numbers. Utility brands that customers felt were very Different showed strong growth. Brands that customers felt lacked Difference all declined. We found the same thing in financial services: customers who felt experiences made a given brand seem more Different were twice as likely to say they had no interest in exploring alternative banking providers. Even though smaller agencies are needed now more than ever, the advertising industry is set up for them to fail… According to an article in Campaign UK, the typical cost of a pitch for an agency in 2023 was £50,057 up 26% from the year prior. Pitch culture is hugely inefficient, unsustainable and inequitable, here’s why: ⏰ Limiting strategy and creativity to often loose, undefined briefs with short turnaround times doesn’t allow individuals to produce the best work, is conducive to burnout and often comes at the expense of true audience insight. 🗑️ Wastage. Pitch theatre and wowing clients for an hour contributes to so much waste - money, time, let alone the environmental aspect. ❌ The closed circle conditions created to even enter the pitch stage. For the big pitches, there’s such a high bar to even enter the competition - most of the time not even based on conditions relevant to assessing the feasibility of executing the work. The irony is, big agencies will come to the small agencies to help them win the very pitches they can’t enter. As an example, a few years ago, a big organisation who we had done some of ‘their most impactful work for’ went live with a mega tender for a new media and creative agency. Of course, only the big guys were called to apply, two of them approached us for our support. A month after the contract was awarded, we were messaged directly by the client in order to help the awarded agency because ‘they’re just not getting it’ 😂 Until smaller, focused agencies who service ‘niche audiences’ are allowed to equitably enter the competitions, advertising will continue to stay stale and brands will continue to miss the mark. So what do we do? I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments but here’s my five pence… 🎭 If you’re a big agency working with a smaller one to provide you with insight, pitch theatre or anything that’s going to contribute to you winning the pitch, build in guarantees to provide work to that agency (or bonuses) if the pitch is won 🫵 Brands need to lead the change surrounding pitch culture. If the point is to uncover the best agency for the work, the current processes often don’t allow for that to happen in an easy, sustainable and equitable way. ⚙️ Some organisations still have procurement lists that can’t be added to for FIVE years 😂 procurement teams, let’s be a bit more nimble than that. 💰This year, we’ve had far too many brands waste our time asking for us to propose for work, only to be told budgets have been scrapped. I’ve heard this from many other agencies also. Be upfront with cost availability and don’t steal ideas externally to execute them internally 🤝Avengers assemble! Agencies should do more to equitably join forces to enter pitches they may not individually win. Waitrose recently dropped a video featuring S Club 7, a big-budget production that probably looked great on paper, but missed the mark on TikTok.  Why? It felt like a TV ad in disguise... Let's be honest, TikTok isn't TV - It's all about super quick, super fun, short-form videos.  So, long, high-production videos turn users off before the video even starts.  In comparison to Waitrose's other recent TikTok, it hit over 11.6K likes all because it was more authentic, real, and perfectly tailored for TikTok.  Brands must embrace TikTok for what it is.  Even if you’re creating an ad, it has to look and feel like a TikTok.  The difference in engagement between these two videos shows why brands need to fully commit to native TikTok creative if they want real results.
