Light at the end of the tunnel? I believe so and here is why... Whilst Sequel Search is exclusively focused on Partner hires into the Consultancy sector, we have seen much more demand from our network of C-level execs, Strategy Directors and Transformation Directors, who work within large corporate firms, for in-house strategy and transformation talent over the last few months. Expedia, Diageo, BT, Brambles, Astellas, Visa, Centrica, DMGT, Primark are all examples of firms who have either recently hired or currently hiring for fairly senior strategy roles. This is normally an indicator that strategic initiatives and transformation programmes are starting to move again after what has been a fairly dry period. When these internal teams start to get busy, the Consultancy sector is then positively impacted. This, combined with significantly busier PE deal flow, should be a clear sign for Consultancy firms that there is light at the end of the tunnel and it's appearing fairly rapidly. Most Partners in Consulting firms fully agree that momentum is building and benches are emptying. Most of my competitors who serve the Consultancy sector are starting to have good months, good quarters in what has been a generally dire time for these firms over the last 18 months. Some of my clients have even started to hire Consultants and Senior Consultants again. All of the indicators are there. The talent market however has not yet fully caught up with the quiet progress that is being made in market confidence, so it is still very possible for Consulting firms to find top class talent in a supply heavy environment before the market completely wakes up. My advice to Consulting firms? Don't be left behind, it's time to start re/building. Last Thursday, we continued the conversations from the recent AWS Summit at our PwC & AWS Breakfast event. On the move this morning, so a shorter-than-usual post on the latest Recruitment & Employment Confederation #ReportOnJobs, produced with S&P Global and KPMG UK, and based on #Recruiters May billings data. Tl;dr - market turning, but slowly. Permanent placements falling, but at lowest rate in over a year (48.2) and with one region - English Midlands - recording becoming the first to show marginal growth in a long time. Similar picture on temp, which has a much shorter period of contraction. At 47.2 the best number since Jan, but still slowing on average. Both the Midlands and the North have returned to growth though. Vacancies (49.7) almost flat and growing in the private sector - again ending a spring of general contraction. This is a leading indecator for billings in a month or two. Sector position also more positive, led by: engineering, logistics/light industrial, accounting and financial, healthcare and hospitality. Though still lagging - some evidence of a turn in construction and IT too. Staff availability rising strongly for perm jobs as changes made by employers over the spring play out (62.4), by comparison temp availability is also rising strongly but has slowed a little (59.7). Pay showing remarkable consistency across the Spring and into Summer - around 55 for both again. This is the long run average, reflecting pay settlements and the NMW rise. No sign yet of returning demand in the labour market driving this. Overall - a more benign picture than earlier in the year, which is reflected in feedback from #Recruitment firms. This morning's Recruitment & Employment Confederation #ReportOnJobs - produced with KPMG UK and S&P Global reports on the jobs market in October, based on REC members' billings data. (tl;dr - stasis waiting for the Budget, maybe a glimmer in London of something). Overall, the story is a familiar one. Perm markets weakened at a similar pace to previous months (44.9) and temp likewise (46.3). A notable point though was London - where there was something of an inflection away from recent lows. We'll be watching to see if this becomes a trend - London often moves first - and taken with a growing temp market in the Midlands and North, the picture is not all gloomy, despite the headline numbers remaining weak. Other notable points are that the Bank's decision on interest rates is justified by pay, which for new hires reached its lowest rate of growth since Feb 2021 (52.5) while temp rates remained modest too (51.5). Vacancies dropped (46.1 - lowest since Jan 21). The key driver of this is in the public sector where vacancies are dropping faster - the private sector remains close to flat. Goes again to the idea that there is latent private sector demand that will come with confidence. Feedback from the panel - and other member anecdote - reports that October was characterised by firms sitting on their hands a bit waiting for the Budget. Clearly there were multiple challenging elements last week - but there is now also a stable investment picture for 5y. The challenge now is to get investment going. That requires HMG to deliver on industrial strategy, skills reform, planning etc. And most importantly, to talk up the British economy. It's been a tough couple of years, but potential is there. Time to back British business!
