This collaboration aims to offer travellers more payment flexibility and enhance conversion rates for airlines and travel merchants. Key details: - Klarna will become a preferred BNPL provider for UATP’s network of airlines and travel agencies in the EU and APAC regions. - The partnership targets the $1 trillion air travel sector, currently dominated by credit cards. - Klarna’s BNPL offers short-term, interest-free credit with a 99% global repayment rate. Last year, Outpayce from Amadeus partnered with Opinium to highlight the continued resilience of travel demand and how consumers are incorporating fintech into their experience.   It was the second year in a row we had commissioned this research, surveying the spending habits of 4,500 travelers from five different markets across the globe.  The study revealed that travel remains the top discretionary spend category, ranked a high priority by 12% more respondents than the previous year, with an average expected spend of $3,422, a significant 28% rise from 2022.  I found it encouraging to read in the PYMNTS Consumer Credit Economy Monitor Report that consumers are still willing to spend big on travel, with more than one-third planning to spend more on trips than in 2023.   According to the publication's study, consumers plan to spend approximately $2,400 on average. Credit cards are their preferred payment method, largely due to the rewards and cash-back programs they offer.  Our own research found consumers were less likely to pay for travel using credit, suggesting cost of living pressures had eased for some travelers. According to the Amadeus Travel Technology Investment Trends 2024 research, the top reason business travel agents (BTAs) want to merchandise is to 'offer and service the full end-to-end trip to our customers' (66%). Some 78% say they suggest additional add-ons such as hotels, car rentals, rail, insurance or transfers to customers either frequently or all the time. BTAs are looking for technology providers to assist them in the objective of selling beyond air travel content, with respondents planning to invest in technology to become a one-stop-shop to meet traveler needs. Fragmentation in airline booking isn’t just frustrating; it’s costly. While NDC was created to simplify airline content access, 70% of business travellers report difficulties finding fares through preferred booking channels (BTN Europe). The result? Missed savings and wasted time. Navan’s new NDC integration with Iberia is part of a broader content strategy to address this challenge. Since launching in September, 51% of Iberia bookings are now NDC-enabled, offering a 7.5% overall savings opportunity and allowing 99.6% of bookings to be self-managed, directly by travellers. Why might European buyers be more relaxed than their US counterparts when it comes to the pace of airline NDC rollout? Could it be a direct correlation to the strategy of one of the US carriers in particular, so it's closer to home? And if that's the case, is it really a disparity between European and US travel managers about NDC rollout or more-so the what/why & how of overall corporate travel strategy & engagement with stakeholders in the market v NDC strategy per se? Today I came across some news from Amadeus Travel Impact Suite launched last July 1st, and while I fully support the progress in helping players in the airline ticketing industry measure their carbon footprint, I can’t help but draw a comparison to another article I read today about Air New Zealand’s latest statements. 🔝 Companies love to boast about being "sustainable" and making grand declarations. But while the promises look great on paper, turning them into reality is a whole different story. Airnewzealand recently made a bold move, admitting that it won’t meet its target of cutting emissions by 30% by 2030: -Important- Firstly, the short-term lack of availability of less polluting aircraft highlights the gap between ambition and technological reality. 🔊 We’re talking about ambitious #sustainability goals that sound fantastic in glossy reports but face the harsh reality of technological limitations. The dream of cleaner, greener planes? Still far from viable at the scale we need. 🛩 Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)? It’s barely being produced and is nowhere near ready to replace kerosene in the quantities required, especially for long-haul flights. Yet, companies are still making these promises, fully aware that they’re more aspirational than realistic. ⏫ Air New Zealand's confession is a breath of fresh air (no pun intended). It’s a rare instance of a company admitting that they won’t hit their lofty goals—something we might soon see from others in the industry. Let’s be honest: if the 2030 targets are already looking shaky, how confident can we really be about hitting those ambitious net-zero targets by 2050? 🔎 The disconnect between what’s promised and what’s feasible is becoming more obvious. Yes, the presentations and PR campaigns paint a picture of a greener future, but the reality on the ground (or in the air, in this case) is that the solutions simply aren’t there yet. The industry depends heavily on fossil fuels, and the progress toward alternatives like electric or hydrogen-powered planes is slow and costly. We’re not just talking about tweaking current technologies; we’re talking about a complete overhaul that demands time, massive investment, and infrastructure that doesn’t exist yet. Net-net: While companies keep repeating their bla.. bla... the real question is, what are they doing to actually make it happen? For now, it seems like a case of making bold claims to keep up with the trend, with no solid plan to back them up. It’s almost as if the strategy is to hope that by 2050, the magic solution will have appeared. The airline admission should serve as a wake-up call for the entire aviation sector—and for all industries promising the world but delivering little. The truth is, the future of aviation (and the planet) depends on companies moving from words to actions. It’s time to #rethink how these goals are set and, more importantly, how they’re achieved.
