I didn't expect Flutter would really pay me off... I still remember the time of initial 2020 Covid-19 when I started my career in development. Having a low spec PC, 4 GB ddr2 RAM, 1 GB Nvidia Graphic Card with a broken fan, running Android Studio and the PC starts Whirr... click... clunk... bzzzzt... whirr... The time full of frustration, everything seems a waste of time, and a blurry future. After that PC which was half frustration and little and a half motivation drove me... and I took, an hp Laptop, and then... many other small ones... and MacBook Air M1 and, now MacBook Pro M3 Latest. The moral? not about tools and gadgets, it's about a persistent mindset and habits towards your goals. Steve Jobs says that life events may not make sense as they happen, but looking back, you can see how they connect. The idea is that the seemingly random skills, experiences, and decisions you accumulate can become valuable later, even if their purpose isn’t clear at first. Keep doing what you're doing with right mindset, one day it will really pay you off.

(Gift link) - Nice oped from Martin Casado and Katherine Boyle at a16z VC on the blatant bias for Big Tech in D.C. on all things AI. I've never seen such government favoritism for incumbent tech companies in my 40+ year career. It's frankly obscene, self-destructive behavior. It may be some part exploitation of ignorance on the part of Big Techs (you've been duped), it may be some part faulty ideology, but I don't think there is any question it's also political corruption. It's one of the most extreme examples of government capture we've ever seen. To clarify my position -- I don't think it was necessary to even mention open source in this op-ed as it muddies the water with two issues, even if related (I support some open source, though in LLMs it does have security considerations -- all LLMs do). I'm also not against all regulation in AI, but I am fiercely opposed to regulation that favors dominant monopoly incumbents and/or new ventures with multiple billion dollar valuations that don't even have a product. As I repeat often, the super majority of problems and risks that need regulating in AI are caused by LLM firms and their Big Tech partners. That's where the focus should be, and since they are conflicted, the government shouldn't be relying on them for advice like they are, or internal AI advisers who came from them who are on the payroll of non-profits funded by tech billionaires with a myriad of conflicts. It's ugly. Bottom line: While the U.S. has a serious problem with the Big Tech oligopoly and their oligarchs, we are not quite yet an oligarchy, but we're getting very close to meeting that definition. We better fix it before it's too late. ~~~~~ Quote: Although the public-facing argument for AI regulation is to promote safety, we believe the true purpose is to suppress open-source innovation and deter competitive startups. Many emerging technology companies are well-equipped to help solve national-security challenges, but of the 22 members on the board, none represent startups, or what we call “little tech.” Only two are private companies, and the smallest organization on the board hovers around $1 billion in value. The AI companies selected for the board either are among the world’s largest companies or have received significant funding from those companies, and all are public advocates for stronger regulations on AI models.

AI generated video. LVMs don't understand physics or physiological mechanics. No doubt these will get better with more training and extortionate cost of optimisations. Now imagine you could build a model of video generation by merging together smaller pieces of logic, like Newtonian laws, physiological mechanics, etc... And in time, keep improving the model by updating it with new pieces of information, like the subtle effects of bar height/number on technique. In the last week, two independent studies have come out in which LLMs deliberately lied to observers. GPT-4, for example, lied in 99.16% of test scenarios. Here's a post from the past, I posted this 4 years ago. BTW Maryam is now at Oxford studying French and Arabic, Danyal is 17-year-old with 4 years full-time coding (i.e. programming) experience, and neither has run away from home (yet)!!! Anyway, I hope you benefit from it... ----------------------------------------- Just over 3 years ago, Danyal became the youngest person in the 30-year history of the Physics GCSE (UK 16+ exams) to have achieved an A*. He was 10. His sister, Maryam, also managed an A*. She was 12. So, neither had studied any physics 5 months before their exams, a two-year course, and they cleared the A* boundary by ~20%. WAIT! WHAT!?! This is how they did it... I got 3 past papers, grouped questions by topic - so 5 mechanics questions, 4 electricity ones, etc… I then told them to do the mechanics questions. They thought I was mad. I told them to figure it out from their textbook or YouTube. Them struggling was crucial - it's the best way to learn - and if they couldn't do it after trying, I’d explain. Progress was very very slow. The alternative, being spoon-fed like at schools, doesn't stick and later on in life that's not how you learn. Anyway, they then went on to the next topic's questions, and once they'd done all the topics they did complete past papers. Erm, that's it. And both went on to get A's in their Physics A-levels (2 year course for 18 year olds), still aged 10 and 12, which they taught themselves in 5 months. With schools shut down, why not encourage your kids to learn one of the most empowering life skills of all? The ability to self-teach.

Meta released Llama3 yesterday to great reviews. It is commercially licensed (unless you're a big player). Lots of praise has been heaped on Meta for supporting open-source AI and community development - and lots of questions about what it means for the future of LLMs. Meta's approach is possible because of what Meta is. They are one of the only (if not the only) major AI developers whose business is neither dependent on model serving (e.g. OpenAI and the like) nor threatened by AI developments (e.g. Google). Meta just has a different market position. And this is what makes Meta able to do what it does in this space. Being able to freely release SOTA models with permissive licenses commoditizes their would-be competition right out of the gate. The unique market position cuts both ways, however. Meta's market position as an application layer for social media and advertising hurt it in dealings with Apple, which controlled the hardware layer and limited what Meta could do on their platform. A key takeaway from this is that market positions evolve over time and result in distinctive strengths and weaknesses depending on the perspective. Per Larry Page's early intention, Google set out to develop an AI and is now threatened by that very development. Meta didn't set out to develop an AI but is now benefiting from it in ways that other companies cannot. When investors, entrepreneurs, or company builders think about "moats" or market positioning and strategy, the point is often missed that such strategies shift and change over time and arise in response to changes in the broader world. This is, in part, the intent behind Marc Andreesson's "idea maze". The fact that Meta was on the rocks a few years ago because of issues with Apple, data privacy, metaverse burn, and so forth doesn't make its strategy wrong or poor in the long term -- because it is just that strategy that is enabling it to shine in the light of AI developments. It is significantly more desirable and important for companies to have consistency in their character and vision such that decisions can be made within a framework that can accommodate shifting sands than it is to say that any one outcome is the goal. If this is done well, companies will end up with unique strengths (and vulnerabilities) that will enable them to have distinctive capabilities and opportunities. "Strategy" is a regression fit of "plans". The R^2 value matters in the short term, but the long term is what provides lasting power. #strategy #ai #llms

if you know, you know how to read when there are haters in this case NVIDIA so you have friends at the financial times. so you know that your clients read the financial times. it's the same for the new york times, wall street journal. each publication has it's audience. who are you to say we are in a bubble. perhaps you have a ton of money. and you are playing to short the market. yes there are those who weave a narrative that all is doom and gloom and shout there is a fire. waiting for you to pay them for the fire hose and water they are holding in hand. sorry. can't put out the fire unless you pay me. handsomely. and the bigger the fire. the greater the reward. ask george soros when he shorted the british pound. michael barry. the big short on mortgage backed securities. bill ackman when the pandemic freaked out the markets in march 2020. the playbook is the sky is falling and at the same time they have a trade that offers them a spectacular win. there is no one who calls the top. there are investors who are motivated. asking for oversized returns. check. there are tech founders delivering on creating the machine that moves the machine that makes the money. check. there are the clients who willingly, quickly jump on to purchase said machine from company (machine) to make them money or rather offer them productivity or quality. so i find this kind of abusive when there are journalists who are there to stoke. let's face it. drama. drama. gets. attention. and attention is rewarded. and that attention seems to work really really really well when you instill fear in the market. be wary. be aware. the markets today are going through something. some will speak to japan. some wars. some regulators. some that (ai) is not growing fast enough as advertised. the direction is clear. more digital in our lives. more digital sources to offer choices in our lives. more digital enhancement to offer us a super(human) existence. we are going through growing pains here. a few have the memo and they are updating their systems accordingly. never ever ever forget. he who gets the information first. and. can. and. is willing. to act on it. is alpha. and then there are a lot of lemmings. a. lot. The policies being driven forward by Thierry Breton around the EU AI Act have been utmost damaging for the European tech industry, and they need to be revised as soon as possible. We need to better balance driving European innovation through data collection and modeling with conflicting needs such as data protection and safety. We need to ensure we can turn these developments into businesses that can be the pillar of the next generation of companies that provide productivity growth in Europe. We have no other choice - either we do this here, or we will have to take over products developed in the US and in China, as it already happened with search engines, cell phones, and social networks. We wouldn't want to let this happen with AI applications in robotics or digital assistants. #euacc #euaiact #aiact

This is the first coherent interview I've seen from the new Unity CEO. So its good to see he's not a bubble jumper. Beyond name dropping 'gen' AI for stock bumps and giggles, gen AI is yet to make an actual impact on games. Unity doesn't need to lose money on 'gen' AI. Lots of people who don't work in games predicted 'gen' AI will impact games only to see it do nothing but lose money for tech companies. 'Gen Ai is still useless tech that works best for ads in social media. N Unity is struggling to find a reason for being. It won't be 'gen' AI, or 'web3' or advertising. Can Unity define a reason for their engine, after showing that the last 10 years under John Riccitiello was really about building a free to play engine where the developers were the ones product and at the same time the audience to make money on? ----- GameDeveloper: "Unity CEO says he's 'less focused' on generative AI. Like other CEOs, Matt Bromberg thinks genAI can be a boon to game development, but he isn't putting his full faith in the technology just yet."(Justin Carter) (August 14, 2024) As the game industry is becoming embroiled in the current and potential use of generative AI, Unity CEO Matt Bromberg is "less focused" on it at the moment. Speaking with VentureBeat, he said the engine maker is prioritizing "how we can help customers make games more efficiently and less expensively." While he believes genAI can help with that, there's bigger concerns than the controversial technology. "Unity is agnostic to the derivation of the 3D asset. It can be created in AI," he said. "When you make games, you ingest your assets into the engine and then you start building. We’re interested in that moment and everything that comes after." Companies like EA and Microsoft have touted the potential of generative AI as a much-needed assist to game development. Bromberg shares that same belief, clearly, but he also figures that making games will always be the process' biggest "pain point." In theory, pre-made engines like Unity and Godot can reduce that friction, genAI or no. He believes the former is "uniquely positioned" to help by obfuscating engine complexity and the larger development process. However, he didn't dismiss genAI's potential, either. He believes the technology will eventually have a "meaningful impact" on software, even if the bubble inevitably pops. "That's true of games and anything else," he acknowledged. There's a "challenge" for developers of blockchain games, which haven't gone mainstream, Bromberg continued. Focusing on monetization has hurt the genre more than helped it, but that's also an issue he thinks will be solved over time. "In the game industry, you can always depend on people to innovate their way into new things. It’s probably just a matter of time, but I haven’t seen it yet." Gen AI Bias is dangerous The widespread use of generative AI has revolutionised content creation, yet it also raises significant ethical concerns, especially around the portrayal of sensitive subjects. A concerning example is how some AI-generated images misrepresent "Indian Railways" by depicting highly inappropriate scenes, like people using railway tracks as restrooms. These portrayals not only perpetuate outdated and minority-held views but also amplify these biases across diverse media platforms—from text to videos and cartoons. Such distortions, which might have had some basis in reality decades ago, today do not reflect the broader truth and contribute to spreading incorrect information. The core of my concern lies in the inherent biases within AI systems. It's imperative for these technologies to evolve and incorporate data that mirrors the current realities accurately. This ongoing issue underscores the urgent need for AI to be more sensitive to the contexts it represents.
