This is exciting. Hutan is growing a drop in replacement for marine diesels. Even better post refining the algal oils are a sustainable aviation fuel. Even even better the algal platform produces a lot of oil but also biomass: this means it’s capturing CO2 whilst growing and so the platform produces oil and biomass which is a crop feed whilst being carbon negative. Even even even better the company’s platform grows algae in hot coastal regions where other crops cannot be grown so doesn’t squeeze food crops.

I really love the "Ready Reckoner". If you are into the 'real deal' emission reductions for the production of textile/ apparel, this conversation with Pauline Op de Beeck and Phil Patterson is outstanding. The tool blows my mind. It analyzises all processes (from fiber through yarn preparation, knitting, weaving, wet processing and final stage assembly) into subprocesses, and taking the amount of material processed, the info on kilowatt hours used (based on factory data, software modeling, and supply chain expertise) we have translated into the amount of co2 estimations, with both thermal/ steam heat and electricity..... I mean, get ready to see some amazing details about HOW and WHERE we will reduce Co2 and reach Science Based Targets and other goals to reduce emissins by 55% by 2030 as a sector. We may be at max gummy as new ways of delivering supplements continue to advance. I am seeing strong interest in Chews, dissolving strips, and jellies. The initial candification of supplements is shifting to Convenience & Delight with an eye to improved healthiness, reduction of sugar and flavors, and higher active ingredient payload. One would also be wise to be aware of the widespread emergence of functional active ingredients in foods, snacks, beverages and the Nutrification of Candy. I previously went out on a limb and said Jellies will emerge as a significant delivery system and I saw many more options and examples this year. It may be confirmation bias; it could also actually be happening with supply chain expansion and more options at retail. Not to be ignored... Wellbeing for Women at all life stages has blown up. Neuro-cognitive, gut health, immune and active lifestyle products will continue to proliferate and over-index for growth. The science and marketers are finally catching on that women are NOT smaller men and that there are distinct and unexpected metabolic and hormonal factors that make for different requirements and solutions. The Woman’s Wellbeing category will finally expand beyond procreative and urogenital requirements and embrace all aspects of wellbeing. Current growth in neurocognitive and mood support as well as stress and anxiety will continue. I would also expect that active lifestyle and fitness support for the mature athlete and recreational enthusiast will continue to grow. Of specific interest to me are the compelling developments of 4th generation Omega fatty acids including Omega 7, 9, 10, 11, and 15 as well as sophisticated metabolite rich omega 3 products containing Specialized pro-resolving mediators. New biomass options that may, in time reduce supply chain stress that has restricted growth, algae is here to stay, yeast and other types of precision fermentation as well as CRISPR-Cas 9 (and perhaps Cas12a) modified agriculture (cellular and macro) will prove interesting and create new supply options. The question remains if consumers are ready to embrace genetically modified foods.   Finally, I see continued strength in superfoods, food-based vitamins and green foods as "clean" "simple" & "natural" ingredients and products remain attractive to consumers. By now you all know that the apparel industry is responsible for 2% of global GHG emissions. Recent studies by the World Resources Institute and Apparel Impact Institute (Aii) stress the need for systemic change. In November 2023, Aii convened key leaders at the Bellagio Center, The Rockefeller Foundation, transforming ideas into concrete actions. This gathering unlocked opportunities for manufacturers to invest in decarbonization with the support of apparel brands and financials institutions. Healthy food is a pathway for food transformation. There is no better business case than improving human health. The great news is that if you optimise for health, nutrient-dense, wholesome, or even clean food, then you end up with ingredients that have a positive impact on the environment, sourcing from nature-positive or even regenerative food producers.
