Very interesting to see first visibility on DIY.com of B&Q Marketplace sellers Sponsored Listings. Partnering with CitrusAd, an initial selection of sellers can choose a monthly budget, then select to either give their products high profile locations within the relevant Category or via Search terms, allocate a max' bid per product (minimum 30p) and off you go. We're currently testing a range of products on behalf of our partner brands, the Citrus system is easy to use, the results so far are good and the stat's are excellent. The new fast track for Retail placement. Many retailers have joined the race for innovation. It’s one of the few advantages retailers have over big box. Retailers like Sprouts have made it a major theme. It’s become a fast track of sorts for young brands. There are even retail media plays to game some of these processes. Well, Wakefern just entered the ring. The retailer announced its innaugural innovation event. It’s chain sourcing event will take place in May, 2025. (Not to be confused with the Wakefern Showcase.) AI is no longer just an intriguing concept - it has become an integral part for retailers looking to gain an advantage. The impact of AI is crystal clear from the plethora of recent news stories (Nike, Marks and Spencer, Boots UK, Zalando etc) and the associated profit growth, didn't happen by chance - they prioritised digital innovation.  As we move towards peak trading, retailers who have been slow to embrace AI need to learn from those ahead of them in AI adoption. First is to ensure data integrity, the cliched mantra, rubbish in, rubbish out is worth noting. At the heart of any retail operation is data, alongside core systems, handling everything from supply chain and stock management to sales and HR. These systems churn out massive amounts of data that AI tools need to access. But that data must be accurate for AI to deliver trustworthy insights. Ultimately, retailers should view IT as an engine for growth rather than a cost-centre. Isn't it time to integrate commercially minded IT Managers within leadership teams and Board rooms? CMA Finds Little Evidence That Loyalty Pricing In Supermarkets Is Misleading Shoppers The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) today revealed its initial findings from its ongoing review of loyalty pricing. This probe began in January, regulator has checked whether any aspect of the Tesco, Sainsbury’s, or Morrisons schemes mislead shoppers and if they offer genuine savings. The CMA noted if any pricing practices indicated that the non-loyalty (or non-member) price may have been artificially inflated to make the loyalty price appear “misleadingly attractive”. It has checked information from grocery retailers that offer loyalty pricing, analysing what happens to prices before, during, and after a product goes onto a loyalty price promotion. Its ongoing probe has already involved tens of thousands of loyalty price promotions. In a brief statement today, they said results to date suggest it is “unlikely to identify widespread evidence of loyalty promotions that mislead shoppers in this way”. However, examples were found of retailers alternating between ‘was/now’ promotions available to all shoppers and loyalty price promotions. The CMA said: “This raises questions as to what the ‘regular’ price is for the product and therefore whether the claim saving for the ‘was /now’ promotion is genuine. We are looking further into this issue.” They are also comparing a sample of supermarkets’ loyalty prices to those prices charged by other supermarkets at the same time. “Particularly given concerns raised by stakeholders, it is valuable for shoppers to have insight into how loyalty prices can compare with prices available elsewhere, including when they are on promotion at other retailers,” it said. Meanwhile, the CMA has commissioned a consumer survey to understand the impact of loyalty pricing on how people shop, including how much they shop around and compare prices. The survey will also explore issues such as whether loyalty pricing is affecting shoppers’ engagement with supermarket loyalty schemes, shoppers’ trust that the price savings for members are genuine, and whether shoppers have concerns about supermarkets’ use of their personal data. The CMA is due to publish a full report of its findings in November. Brand vs Price. A very interesting article from Marketplace Pulse (as always) and worth the read. In a recent Amazon category audit we carried out, the top generic search result appeared significantly more frequently than any branded search. However, in terms of sales, the leading brand outperformed the competition by a remarkable 8x. This highlights the power of effective branding in cutting through the noise and driving sales, even when faced with cheaper generic alternatives. Commerce continues to evolve under Jeff Bezos’ ‘your margin is our opportunity’ philosophy, with overseas manufacturers now utilising platforms like Temu to bypass traditional distribution channels and offer lower-priced alternatives. As competition intensifies and fees rise, the old model of repackaging Alibaba products with significant Western markups is becoming less viable. In this changing landscape, building a strong brand is essential for long-term success. Additionally, advocating for government policies that support fair competition and maintain market integrity is increasingly important. Worldpanel by Kantar Irish grocery data for 12w/e to 09/06/24 sees Dunnes Stores stay 1st with 23.4% market share. Tesco Ireland stay second on 23.1% and SuperValu are third with 20.5%. Dunnes and Tesco are pulling away from SuperValu whilst Lidl Ireland on 13.9% has opened a sizeable gap to Aldi Ireland on 11.8%. Taking a long-term view, Aldi hit 11.0% in June 2015. They’ve opened approximately 40 new stores since then, which indicates the ruthlessly competitive market we’re in. They’re currently celebrating 25 years in Ireland but it’s also approaching the 10th anniversary of Tesco robustly price matching Aldi (Autumn 2014) and the Dunnes €10 off €50 voucher (Spring 2015). Many have commented on the seemingly unstoppable ‘march of the discounters’ but the formula has been proven right here in Ireland. In the 4 weeks to 9th June take-home grocery sales increased by 3.4%. Inflation at +2.5% remaining a key driver but there is some volume growth in the market. Households are still not seeing any significant decrease on their shopping bills and whilst the retailers are hungry for cost reductions, suppliers are not seeing significant reductions in their overall cost base. Weather events are increasingly driving cost volatility. For example, drought conditions in Ghana and Ivory Coast are currently driving cocoa prices up.
