James Forrest being part of the same Octopus VPP is showing the way the world has to move, but the key component missing for me is the wider storage management. We now see Octopus (and probably others) in the UK offering 'free' energy when there is a surplus available from green sources. Using a fleet of EVs to offload part of the excess energy, to the benefit of the nation, company and individual is step one...what about using some of that stored energy (on EVs and other devices) to cover shortfalls in green generation? We seem to be slow to implement V2G and grid-level storage but surely this is the key to the permanent removal of more carbon-based generation?

Do National Grid and its stakeholders have the risk appetite to drive the UK’s energy transition?  A stimulating day at National Grid Partners’ innovation day! NG and the distributors are critical to the UK’s energy transition - the core of a living organism - synchronising energy delivery from different sources, storing, transforming and distributing it to meet dynamic demands, geographically and temporally. The pressure for change is urgent and clear - climate change, EV cars, increasing consumer usage, the electrification of heating and AI data centres. The response needs radical and rapid innovation across the network and stakeholders, with massive investment - not easy. Agreeing climate targets is easy for politicians, but delivering at scale needs co-ordination across engineering, operations, financiers and external stakeholders. The shape of the end solution is not clear - many innovations have yet to leave the research lab! And planning permission takes at least a decade! Generation, storage and transmission are all seeing serious technical innovation. Numerous innovations - e.g. perovskite panels, graphene capacitors, carbon nanotube conductors - show incredible promise. But the current network is based on choices, some like AC vs DC, forged in Queen Victoria’s time by Westinghouse, Edison, J.P.Morgan and others. That is NG’s challenge - how to innovate, finance and deploy uncertain technologies at scale in a network that is over 100 years old in parts. Investing in the latest AI and smart grids is a start, but not remotely enough. The only way is to identify and implement research driven innovation. It is complex especially when innovation is global in our multi-polar world, with China leading in research and scale, and Saudi for scale, deployment speed and capital! Transforming the core and the distribution networks is so significant, that some believe that only 21st century robber barons, such as Elon Musk have the appetite for risk and the rewards. NG has the opportunity to prove them wrong, but to do so, has to embrace risk and ramp up its investments and partnerships globally, as a network operator,  investor and venture client. You probably didn't notice but October 1st was the launch date of the newest public institution in the UK – the 'National Energy System Operator' (NESO). The NESO replaces National Grid and is mandated with the simple task of ... "delivering electricity decarbonisation and whole energy system planning to deliver Net-Zero." This is a great initiative that has been many years in the making with cross party support. We need whole of system thinking and the NESO will have strategic oversight of both the electricity and gas systems. The first task is to take our electricity grid to net zero by 2030 which NESO say can be achieved. UK market data is being provided through far more reliable data feeds by the system operator, and this data is also far more accessible. No company is perfect - but 87% satisfaction for Octopus (according the latest official survey by regulator, Ofgem) is no accident. The energy transition needs to be done *for* and *with* customers, not *to* them. We desperately need to bring bills down through renewables, EVs, batteries, interconnectors - otherwise we are not only failing customers, but risk the backlash which will kill it. Too many incumbents and parts of the energy industry are too remote from customers - they've been seen by many as "offtakers" rather than the entire reason an industry exists. By contrast, we chose to invest hundreds of millions in building technology (Kraken) and an organisational structure which are fundamentally different than others. Many observers misunderstood - the question always was "will this scale?" - but in reality, tech & culture allowed us to improve with scale. It makes sense - when you're small, "edge cases" are not significant enough to automate solutions for, and you don't have enough learning opportunities to identify, test and deploys solutions. Of course, innovation creates an every harder set of problems to solve. Each time we create new products, services and tariffs there's more to go wrong - vastly more - and it's often reliant on old fashioned networks, systems and markets - or regulation which (understandably) cannot keep up with the pace of change offered by tech. The vast majority of the issues which frustrate customers are caused by these - but overall we believe it's better to keep on inventing and innovating, and fixing the issues this creates. And customers and team are brilliant in understanding this. And it's really important to understand the role of outstanding investors - choosing to allow us to create long term value, not short term profit maximising - so we've been able to relentlessly focus on delivering excellent service to customers whilst innovating like mad to help bring down energy costs through technology. The energy transition has been described as being in its awkward teenage years (struggling in the process of moving from the old static world to the new dynamic one) - but it's vital we keep putting customers first. The anti-cyclone combined with heavy cloud cover weather patterns provided much of Europe with low resource levels to energise both #wind and #solar over the first two weeks of November. There is a route to build predictable dispatch of electricity from the UK abundance of #tidal energy in the form of #tidalstream and #tidalbarage. Combined capacity is in the region of 45GW and works positively with #bess and #ldes solutions. The gif below shows the impact of spring and neap tides taking place every 7 days providing predictable dispatch 365 days of the year. If we are looking for joined up thinking to re-energise UK ports and heavy industries we have a small number of world leading UK players in this market to deliver power quickly in a short period relative to #nuclear.
