Does your aggregate dryer burner have flame shaping capability? It should, here's why: 1. No two dryer drums are the same, so why would a 'fixed' (non-adjustable) flame envelope fit every dryer? 2. Dryer combustion zone design (the non-veiling section of the drum) varies in both length and diameter. So should your flame to match it. 3. Many dryer combustion (and veiling) flights differ dramatically; this changes where/how the material veils (or doesn't) and subsequently heat transfer to the mix. Your flame shape should be able to adjust to accommodate. 4. The dryer shell, depending on the combustion zone flight design, will be subject to differing amounts of direct flame radiation, to avoid over-heating the shell - adjust the flame shape! 5. When material veils or falls into the flame itself, the flame is quenched leading to high CO emissions (unburned fuel), an efficiency loss ($$), and let's not forget about those fun air permit emissions requirements! 6. Depending on drum suction, the flame shape could be affected and potentially cause premature over-heating of burner parts and/or the dryer itself. For these reasons (and more), adjustable flame shaping capability should be a serious consideration for your next burner purchase!

CONDITION MONITORING - VIBRATIONS   Our own Ben Jeffery is back for the second instalment on condition monitoring using the ifm Moneo platform. Last time Ben discussed air flow monitoring to check to for leaks in our compressor system here at ACS – in this video we are looking at how that works in conjunction with vibration monitoring on the compressor unit itself.   We have installed a ifm VVB001 vibration sensor on our compression unit and integrated that into the Moneo platform as a diagnostic tool to map trends in performance and ensure maximum efficiency is being achieved from this important onsite asset.   When equipment of this sort fails it most often occurs gradually over a period of time. Monitoring various status parameters offers the ability to map trends to: * predict potential failures * virtually eliminate downtime of expensive and essential assets We have various application specific vibration monitoring tools and can work with you to find the best fit for your particular circumstance – and we can help integrate these sensors into the Moneo platform for remote access to your data. Have you been surprised by your customer demanding CE/UKCA marking after work on their machine had been carried out? 👉 The Customer provided their machine to be modified by your business. You assumed that you don't need to CE mark the machine because he had not asked. When it comes to the machine collection and payment, your customer demands proper CE marking, and what can you do then? 👉 It is painful if you have not considered CE marking, as it entails additional unexpected costs. And the problem certainly lies with you. You cannot say you didn't know this. On site this week monitoring noise and vibration levels for one of our valued customers during High Energy Impact Compaction by the highly sophisticated machine you see here. Soils are compacted by repeated, systematic application of high energy using specifically shaped heavy (non-circular) twin drum impact roller assemblies, so the monitoring of neighbouring properties for noise and vibration was essential for the protection of both people and property. #Noisemonitoring #Vibrationmonitoring Landpac Ground Engineering

#fridaythoughts - it’s been a busy week, one which has had me thinking about #reputation and #customerservice. We in the LEV industry love to get together and wax eloquent about the people in our industry who do things in a way we consider inferior to the way that we do them! This brings much differing opinion. Opinions and different ideas can be great. That’s how we learn, all of us, but there is a difference between differing opinions and blatant negligence through either laziness, or lack of knowledge. Unfortunately this is something we see all too often. When dealing with equipment and procedure pertaining to worker health and safety, indifference to correct execution can costs lives. Unfortunately we have seen this indifference all too obviously this week. After ascertaining the facts from our customer this was a case of laziness, not lack of knowledge. I can forgive lack of knowledge, I cannot forgive negligence in performing a professional service. In this instance it has only resulted in this party losing a customer and us gaining one, but it could always be a lot worse, especially pertaining to matters of an explosive nature! We pride ourselves on doing things the way they should be done. There is no better feeling at work than getting praise from a satisfied customer and them trusting you to carry out further work. We build these relationships in the name of worker safety and business prosperity for both us and our customer and its great to get it right! What’s the moral of the story? Furnace Solutions 18 Neil Simpson CEng MEI FSGT of AMETEK Land looks at the process optimisation as a start to the decarbonisation journey. This work was done in collaboration with CelSian and SAVERGLASS. Work on the Alpha glass furnace reported across recent meetings. CelSian laser sensor has a number of measurements available but can offer some accurate repeatable measurements. This can be tied in with the Land infrared camera to offer greater process control options, explored at the Saverglass furnace. A combination of these and other sensor packages. Extending the regenerator cycle from 20 to 30 minutes un order to extend the pull.

Sticking! This must be one of the topics I discuss most with our customers. Understanding and correctly interpreting what is happing can go a long way to minimise the impact of this challenge on production An example of this is why do we often see sticking occur in the middle if the punch? There are many causes of sticking but an overlooked factor might be design. A concave punch tip profile compresses the formulation around the edge of the tablet more than in the centre due to the tablet profile. Which results in a lower hardness in the centre or core of the tablet. Here at Trillium, we have vast experience accommodating our customers' stringent service specifications regarding the critical services our pumps provide under severe operating conditions. The API VS6 closed drain pumps shown here will encounter hydrocarbons containing significant amounts of sulphur and Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S). This drives specific requirements in the materials utilized in order to prevent Sulphide Stress Cracking (SSC). To put this in context for readers who are not familiar with this chemical, preventing accidental H2S leakage is a critical safety function of the pump design. The CSB safety video linked here demonstrates what can happen if an uncontrolled H2S release occurs. In this case it is achieved through steam tubing to reduce any possibility of high tracing temperatures causing coking of the pumped liquid.
