Education

  • Durham University Graphic

    Durham University

    -

Funded by Courtaulds Plc, supervised by Prof Randal Richards, to study the surface modification of polymer blends. The work involved neutron scattering studies to measure near surface composition profiles in dPMMA/hPMMA, PEO/PMMA and PS/PS(F) blends, where PS(F) is a polystyrene with a fluorinated endcap. Small angle neutron scattering measurements were made to establish the interaction parameter in blends.

Projects

  • Civil Service People Survey

The Civil Service People Survey project provides a web application for survey managers and Civil Servants in the UK Civil Service to explore the results of their annual staff survey. My role was to project manage ScraperWiki's execution of this project.

  • FP7 NewsReader

I've led the ScraperWiki contribution to the EU NewsReader project using natural language processing and semantic web technology to better understand the news.

We ran Hack Days to give users the opportunity to use the NewsReader technology. With Steven Maude I wrote a Simple API to access the underlying NewsReader data by wrapping SPARQL queries in a friendly form.

This involved learning about Datamesh, implementing some test cases in Python and building a commandline tool for interacting with metadata so that the Datamesh could be used beyond the founding project. I wrote extensive code for generating metadata and profiling datasets from, as well as code for checking new instances of a dataset against. The driving principle for this work was that code files should not contain dataset metadata. I also wrote importer functions to push metadata into Linkedin DataHub.

As part of this work I improved my software development skills, using Azure Pipelines for code integration, published Python projects to a private PyPI repository, using AWS Athena for profiling large files and Terraform for deploying infrastructure

  • Property Intelligence

    -

At GB Group Plc I built the Property Intelligence dataset which is delivered to customers in a variety of formats. This involved fine tuning requirements in collaboration with the Product Manager and early customers, carrying out the technical work of sourcing, processing and modelling the data, transferring the ongoing build to our Production team and providing the Sales and Marketing teams with technical support involving talking directly to key customers.

  • London Underground - Can I walk it?

    -

Can I walk it? is a small web application which allows the user to discover the distance to other London Underground stations from an origin station. These distances are often surprisingly short, making a walk a pleasant alternative.

This is my first project involving JavaScript, HTML/CSS and deployment of an application as a Docker container. Bootstrap is used to provide a CSS framework, and the mapwork is done with leaflet.js. Very educational, and a useful tool as well!

  • London Underground Visualisation in Tableau

    -

I created a visualisation in Tableau of data relating to the London Underground, this visualisation now forms part of the regional sample workbook distributed with Tableau 9.

The data includes information on passenger numbers, the years in which stations were opened, and the depth below ground of the stations. It includes a map view which can be switched between the "circuit diagram" layout and the geographic layout.

  • BIG lottery funding analysis

    -

The government released the donation data for the BIG lottery fund, detailing where all the money was spent in terms of category, location, and charity. This project shows some analysis of that data release using Tableau and also uses some natural language processing to identify sports within the organisations awarded.
