The first live trials for the Centre of Excellence for Decarbonising Roads have begun! This UK-wide initiative, part of the ADEPT Live Labs 2 programme, is a major step towards greener, more sustainable local roads. Trials are taking place in North Lanarkshire and the West Midlands, testing innovative low-carbon materials to repair potholes. Our latest case study explores how we supported GeoPlace, an organisation that manages and maintains the primary UK address and street data, to measure and manage their greenhouse gas emissions. We produced a carbon footprint inventory for the 2019 and 2022 and verified that significant reductions had been achieved through decommissioning some servers and behaviour changes in commuting, travel and accommodation. Our consultants delivered Carbon Literacy training to staff and helped them to identify opportunities to further reduce their climate impacts both within the organisation and at home. Exciting news! 🌟 The first set of #HeatNetwork zoning maps for England have been released by Department for Energy Security and Net Zero today. These maps showcase potential heat network zones across towns and cities. We're proud that these maps were generated using data from our National Zoning Model (NZM), representing years of dedicated work by CSE's modelling team. This milestone underscores the vast potential for heat networks in tackling the UK's decarbonisation challenge 👏 There’s so much heat that needs decarbonising across the UK and heat networks are often the best solution. Geospatial Insight - Sustainability (GSI) recently collaborated with Stagecoach Group Limited to assess the solar potential for over 130 depots across Great Britain. As one of the UK's largest transport providers, it was imperative for Stagecoach that they understood in detail: - - The potential for them to generate their own clean energy from the rooftops they own and operate - How onsite energy generation can be harnessed to support their transition to an electrified fleet - What level of energy security could be provided through onsite generation given the volatility experienced in recent years GSI utilised intelligence from our LOCATE Solar database, which contains rooftop solar suitability insights for over 26m GB buildings. This information was delivered as individual property reports, integrating aerial imagery to support conextualisation and visualisation, facilitating internal sharing and reporting. The plan was approved for publication by the Government on the 21 August 2024 and includes proposals for a new reservoir for the South East and a water recycling project in West London. Thames Water forecasts that it will need an additional 1 billion litres of water every day for its customers by 2050, and has also calculated that a severe drought could cost London’s economy as much £500 million a day. Thames Water is one of five water utilities across the region to receive Government approval for their plans. Companies have taken a collaborative approach, working with Water Resources South East (WRSE) to look beyond their boundaries and create plans which benefit the whole region. We know there are trends in annual milage linked to fuel technology, with diesel-fuelled cars travelling significantly further each year than petrol, with further disaggregation for engine size, vintage and location. We need a more complex metric to understand the adoption of BEV as we approach the intermediate phase-out of ICE and longer retention of older, larger cars that have become increasingly reliable and costly to replace.

MEI's Big Earth Data Project resources have launched! The UK Space Agency has funded MEI to create a suite of hands-on activities designed to introduce young people to the many applications of satellite data. The Big Earth Data Project resources are designed to help students develop skills in working large datasets and interpreting the results. The first set of activities, launched today, focus on the Atmosphere: The Hole in the Ozone Layer. Activities for both Key Stage 3-4 and Key Stage 4-5 students use daily and monthly data for the ozone hole and various atmospheric and weather measurements. Future resources will focus on forest fires and their atmospheric effects. The Big Earth Data Project is free for everyone to download. The resources will be a great addition to the maths curriculum, using engaging contexts such as climate change, the effects of humans on the Earth, and emergency disaster response. They could also be used for enrichment or in a maths club. Have you ever wanted to use weather forecast data to better understand how your assets might be impacted by rain, sleet and snow? This is now possible for all customers with the new Beta release of our UK Precipitation Forecast, available through the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World.    The UK Precipitation Forecast uses data derived from NOAA forecasts and is updated every 6 hours.
