There is an increasing drive to get people into green jobs, but how is the industry working to fill the offshore wind farm skills gap? As the renewable energy space continues to grow, so does the need for jobs. And for the offshore wind arm of this ever-expanding sector, this could not be more true. The Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC)'s 2023 report calls for 70,000 additional jobs in this space alone between now and 2030. THAMES VESSEL AND QUAY OPERATORS - HAVE YOU SHARED YOUR FUTURE ENERGY REQUIREMENTS WITH US YET? Electric Thames is an ambitious plan which could see a radical new relationship between Thames vessel and quay operators and London’s energy network. It is a collaboration between Marine Zero, LCP Delta, and UK Power Networks. Launched in April 2024, the project is exploring how a new generation of electric and clean fuel vessels could help to power London’s electricity network, generating income for vessel operators and reducing emissions in the capital. We are currently surveying Thames vessel and quay operators to identify and map out their future energy requirements. This will allow us to better plan and complete enabling works to facilitate the move to cleaner vessel and river operations in the vitally important River Thames. The information we collect from vessel and quay operators will also allow us to understand how quayside power units and a new generation of electric and clean fuel vessels could support London’s energy network, generating income for operators and reducing emissions in the capital. What does a planning and consenting system fit for Scotland’s wind energy pipeline look like?   It’s day two of Wind Energy Week 2024 and we’re looking at the fundamental role of planning and consenting in delivering the wind energy capacity needed for net-zero.   The Scottish Onshore Wind Sector is a shining example of how effective collaboration can work to produce a streamlined and standardised planning process, accelerating Scotland towards its 2030 target of 20GW of onshore wind.   Adopting a holistic, strategic approach to planning the future energy system is essential for facilitating timely consents of projects, delivering efficient processes and resources for our planning system and giving confidence to industry and investors.   #Planning #Consenting #WEW24

Malta continues to show interest and readiness in exploiting its 25 GW of technical offshore wind potential. The small island nation is set to publish a pre-qualification questionnaire to gauge interest in floating wind development.    Having already identified six areas for offshore wind development earlier this year, Malta’s offshore wind potential is best suited for floating wind technologies like Gazelle Wind Power’s next-generation lower cost, modular, scalable, sustainable, and durable floating wind platform.  The country is preparing to strengthen its interconnection network with investment in battery storage and additional renewable energy projects, and Gazelle stands ready to contribute to Malta’s floating wind energy future. Scotland has a globally significant offshore wind pipeline, with a number of projects set to deliver £30 billion into Scotland’s economy.   To capitalise on this, Scotland needs to ensure its ports and supply chain are ready. That will require investment and commitments from future customers - the offshore wind projects. However, offshore wind projects take many years to deliver and suppliers are only contracted shortly before construction commences.   Catch 22 - ports need pre-investment to be ready for build out, but contracts come too late to act as a signal.   Scotland's solution is simple - collaboration. The Strategic Investment Model (SIM) involves Scottish offshore wind projects working alongside the Scottish Government and its enterprise agencies collaboratively. 📢New Government report highlights supply chain and skills shortages that could jeopardise UK offshore wind development 📢 This Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) report addresses the critical supply chain and skills shortages that could harm the UK's 2030 50 GW offshore wind power generation goal. Below are some of the report's key observations about the renewable energy skills shortage: "Shortages are particularly acute for design and commissioning engineers, project managers, and installation technicians. There is intense national and international competition for new and experienced hires with these skillsets." "From engineering and design professionals to the commissioning and installation workforce, personnel shortages may limit the UK’s ability to meet the BESS deployment targets."  "A more detailed, holistic skills assessment examining the skills pipeline and demand across these sectors would help inform how secondary and higher education and employers should respond." In addition to the points above, the report also references The OWIC’s Offshore Wind Skills Intelligence Report and the National Grid’s Building the Net Zero Energy Workforce, which state that: - The UK offshore wind workforce must increase from 32,000+ to 104,000+ by 2030 to achieve the 50 GW target. - 260,000 new roles must be filled by 2050 to meet growth targets and projected demand. As the report reveals, despite the UK's well-established engineering institutions and increased numbers of students and applicants, significant shortages of skilled labour still need to be addressed to maintain positive momentum in the transition towards renewable energy. The Green Jobs Plan, which the government is due to publish later this year, will address these issues through various recommendations and action points for institutions, associations and offshore wind businesses to implement over the coming years.
