There’s a buzz around the whole country as plans for major events, activations, and campaigns turn to action. At Seven Media and Seven Studios ME, we’ve spent the summer working on ‘𝐒𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐝’ - a bold refresh to our approach to build on the companies’ market dominance and dynamism. Expect to hear lots from Seven in the coming weeks, such as: ➡️ The upcoming launch of our new Emerging Technologies Practice, ➡️ A bolstered and restructured Studios team, ➡️ Some innovative brand extensions, ➡️ And a bold approach to company culture. ➡️ Seven’s office in Saudi Arabia is also gearing up for some big things. It’s been a busy summer. A dozen or so major new clients have been added to our portfolio and are due to kick off this month. FIND YOUR BLINDSPOT. That’s a wrap on another 6-week marketing audit completed for my latest pub group client. My “marketing MOT’s” produce 51-pages of insight (at least) on how your marketing systems and processes are all performing from a data-led perspective including a customer A&R funnel showing how they flow through your business from finding you online (pretty cool). Following the audit you get a RAG rated action plan and a project timeline on how to fix the most critical issues in the right order to drive your top-line sales. An interesting and fun afternoon at Imbibe 24 yesterday. In a hall at London's Olympia packed full of drinks and hospitality brands Beth Marchant and I: - tried nut moonshine (amazing), Moutai (biggest drinks brand in the world with a awe inspiring story, but frankly disgusting!), and a beautiful cocktail from the team at the bar in the Shard's Shangri-La Hotel - learnt that there's no tax on beer up to 3.4% ABV which is why there are so many 3% beers coming out now, that there are around 100,000 wines on sales in the UK, and that during COVID BAME hospitality workers were 26x more likely to lose their jobs - saw so many opportunities for brand design agencies to be at this conference, telling the drinks and hospitality industries about the value they can bring And yet, not a single brand design agency on any stage! OFFF, D&AD, HOW, SXSW - you can't move for brand design agencies, and rightly so. But our industry is missing a trick by not being out and having a presence at conferences in other sectors. At Red Setter we're changing that. We're getting our clients out on these stages. #prfordesignagencies

A bunfight over Brexit and a brand   Is it fair for an investor's political views to impact on a company’s brand? That’s the question raised by the news that Gail’s, the bakery bellwether of gentrification, has been boycotted by activist residents of Walthamstow, seemingly partially due to the fact of Gail’s minority investor’s views on Brexit and Covid lockdowns.   Like it or not, we are living in an increasingly polarised world. For years marketers have implored brands to create a ‘personality’, to share their ‘values’ and to profess their ‘identities’, through customer, social and traditional media engagement. Increasingly brand personas are  shaped by concurrent political and social mores. The trouble comes when the virtues a company (or now investor) signals are not shared by the discerning end purchaser.    While the Gail’s challenge is wrapped up as an impassioned defence of independent stores, Luke Johnson’s personal views were specifically referenced in a local barista’s objections. What if a leader’s beliefs change over time, as we are told has happened in relation to many a Brexit vote?    In a week in which we've seen a campaign highlighting Prince William's hypocrisy for earning a bob or two from car dealers renting his Duchy of Cornwall land, yet creating the environmental Earthshot prize, and Starbucks changing its CEO partly due to customer fall-out over its perceived support for Israel in the Gaza conflict, it is clear that business leaders’ political stances and ESG considerations increasingly collide.     For communicators this poses ongoing challenges. Who is the arbiter of views held by businesspeople, as to whether they are sufficiently acceptable so as not to impact turnover? It’s undoubtedly consumers, but smart comms advisers will spot impending trouble if consulted in time. Balanced decisions can then be made between risk and reward.   Humanising a brand and helping it evolve with the zeitgeist can make it more accessible - but companies enter the shark infested waters of certain debates at their peril – which is why the savvy will have boundaries on their owners’ public engagement. There’s one simple rule these days - if you do make your political views widely known, it risks commercial, and often professional, consequences.   That said, some brands will take the Millwall approach and care little for the views of those who are not already supporters.  Others, however, in a keenly-competitive market place, may well think twice about receiving investment from entities or individuals known to hold polarising views.    In short, if you look to portray a persona, you have to live by all that that stands for, or risk deterring consumers whilst disappointing existing ones too.    I’m just left wondering, in the game of virtues, quis custodiet ipsos custodes? https://lnkd.in/eKfEu-tW #Commschallenges #brands #identity #esg

Pret Subscription Scrapped. Pret is replacing its £30-a-month subscription (for five free drinks a day) with a new £10-a-month plan that provides half-price drinks. There will no longer be food discounts. Some thoughts: New Customer Acquisition: The original plan was intended to attract new customers with an irresistible deal. After nearly five years, Pret is banking on these customers' loyalty to keep them coming back. Will they? Or is this a sign that more and more people are starting to go into the office 5 days a week..... (so the offer is too rich, or they feel there is no need to continue...) Chaos: The subscription caused significant delays, with long queues and overworked baristas. This disrupted the main business of food service. Inequity: The dual benefit of the old subscription (including a 20% discount on food) led to unfairness among non-subscribers, who felt they were overpaying. How do you feel about your subscription ending in September?
