“Implementing sustainability: the GC perspective” is the topic General Counsel Sustainability Forum member, Sinead Murray will discuss at the Economist Summit. “Broader” rather than “narrower” is long term view re: sustainability you'd anticipate of someone like Sinead, as the GC of OFGEM, the UK’s energy regulator. The good news is this is now the norm rather than the exception amongst the many global GCs and CLOs of large corporations that we interact with. The clear evidence from Sinead’s fellow panellists, and the other members of GCS Forum, all of whom are GCs of significant entities, is those who choose “broader” both give and gain a considerable amount from their investment of time and attention. ⭕ NARROW Every GC has to pay attention to the increasing sustainability regulation, reporting and reputational demands on their org, and in the short term this “narrow” view has to be the main, sometimes exclusive, focus for most GCs, including Forum members. ⚫  BROAD As an individual overseeing a wide array of compliance issues, the GC is ideally placed to also go broad: horizon scanning, join the dots and support the business to both comply AND achieve its wider climate and sustainability commitments. 🔵 PEER SHARING Whether you view sustainability exclusively from the narrow compliance perspective, or also have a broader view, it is vital for GCs to share and learn from the challenges, achievements and insights of others as they and their organisation navigates the sustainability transition. The GC Summit’s theme is “Leading a new era of responsible business”, and so there’ll be plenty of peer sharing on this topic.
