Interesting round table this morning at Department for Science, Innovation and Technology on realising the potential for the UK AI Assurance industry. The Government (rightly) sees this as an area with strong potential for UK. We have great institutions (including the AI Safety Institute, The Alan Turing Institute and Ada Lovelace Institute), strong professional bodies, a burgeoning AI industry and fabulous (international) talent. It might yet be a vector for growth - and a niche that the UK can carve for itself at the top table. However, in the medium term the strongest driver of growth for AI Assurance services is going to be firms preparing for, and aligning with, the European Union AI Act. As it is operationalised over the next few years it will provide the rules to follow and the sticks to avoid. If a US-based firm (for example) looks to advice from London then that is what they will primarily want to discuss. And it's still not clear how the UK will interface with this. The UK's pending AI legislation will focus on larger, frontier models and core industry leaders - and then rapidly devolve to vertical sectoral focus (e.g. separate rules for financial services under the FSA and so on). There is a logic to this. But it's not necessarily going to help the UK AI Assurance Industry grab a lion's share of international work. When Best Practice AI built out our AI Explainability Statements (with Jacob Turner of Fountain Court Chambers and Minesh Tanna from Simmons & Simmons) it was close cooperation with the Information Commissioner's Office that made our projects for Healthily and HireVue really sing. That worked because the UK had implemented GDPR and they could provide relevant feedback on our approach to operationalising the AI explainability implications. Today's discussion was a great opportunity to range across issues from kitemarks to professionalisation of the industry, size and growth of the market to insights from some of the key players. I was (once again) impressed by the deep knowledge and insight, energy and goodwill that the UK has available in its AI companies, institutions and advisers. The challenge will be mobilising this to build an industry to serve the country (and world) wisely. Great to be at the #DigitalHealthOx event on digital health partnerships yesterday AND to have a panel there focused on pathways to net zero   Great panel, Caitríona Callan (Health Foundation); Regent Lee (University of Oxford), Tom Dawson (Revolution-ZERO), and Amelia James – chaired by Paul Durrands    Key messages across the panel included the need for high impact innovation, and for everyone in the NHS to be readily signposted to the innovations that can get us to net zero. To do this, we need to invest resources to shift to low carbon care models, put sustainability at the core of good leadership (all too easy for it to be ‘crowded out’), ensure major policy levers (e.g. payment systems, regulation) are used to drive progress and net zero goals, and rapidly build the evidence base to enable faster decarbonisation of care (while ensuring that patient outcomes come first).   Things are starting to change, but we need spread and scale. Urgently. It remains challenging to really engage people across the NHS with the net zero agenda. The panel flagged three examples of work where this is starting to happen (while noting there are many more):   1.     Developing a circular economy, eg displacing single use medical textiles such as surgical masks and aprons, reporting environmental impacts, demonstrating clinical effectiveness and cost savings, and then informing => scale up   2.     Enabling sustainable procurement, with all NHS suppliers (from April 2030) required to demonstrate progress through their published report and the new Evergreen Sustainability supplier assessment (see https://lnkd.in/ezzuvwvT 3.     Linking with the theme of digital health, using AI to reduce the carbon footprint of CT scans via changes in workflow, reduced use of scanners, and phasing out single use products.   My take home from this was that it wasn’t the busiest session of the day and that many of the people who want to innovate, or learn from it and do things differently, weren't in the room. There's clearly significant work to do, to decarbonise and, critically, to engage people with the net zero agenda. Agreed but… Consent isn't truly informed unless it's based on personalised information relevant to the specific treatment. Generic details on a consent form (digital or paper) can't address the unique concerns and circumstances of each patient. #ai #funding #nhs #bartslifesciences Hassan your points are well made and probably not news for most in the space. Seed funding in the U.K. and Europe lags well behind other economies. There is little appetite for risk in our geographies. Despite this, we have amazing human capital . Is an NHS AI lab, centralized and fossilised by process and committes a good solution to rapidly evolving AI? I would submit not . The revolution and evolution will come from bottom up. The NHS role needs to focus on evaluation, translation. co creation and equity stakes in start ups. Do trust boards and the NHS have an appetite for these new horizons??

We have engineered our platform to protect the consumer from being reidentified, while making data linkable and contained analytics possible so that we can solve financial inclusion, reduce fraud and even hopefully cure cancer. Over regulating is often as harmful as under regulating.

Congratulations to the getUBetter team for securing National Institute for Health and Care Research and Office for Life Sciences funding for our innovative digital self-management support platform https://lnkd.in/dpXKRkMC NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) and the Office for Life Sciences (OLS) have funded 7 new research projects aimed at bringing new technologies into the NHS to benefit patients. Health innovation provides critical solutions to key challenges faced by the health system, and as part of the health and growth missions action is being taken across government to ensure this innovation makes it into the hands of patients who need it. The seven projects funded include research into digitally-enabled cognitive behavioural therapies, digital tools to support weight loss and low back pain, and virtual reality therapy for severe mental health difficulties. These products have been identified as promising medical technologies that meet a national unmet need, with the potential to have most impact and add value to patients and the health and care system. The funded teams will be gathering real world evidence for their products. #Ai realities and froth in #healthcare One of the The Labour Party ‘reform’ principles for the #NHS is analogue to digital. For digital one might hope it’s about the basic infrastructure and enabling rather than adding more work. It is definitely about the Ai elixir. Is the elixir real or just more snake oil? Can the NHS move out of the foothills of digital transformation? Responding to the Darzi report in Digital Health, our CEO and co-founder Dr Rachael Grimaldi says: “Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham OM KBE PC FRS is right to point out that patient care is held back by outdated IT. There are still many areas in the NHS where technology is still a novelty; like language translation and communication. “Using technology to break down communication barriers, especially in some of the most urgent or unplanned situations, is crucial. However, the existing barriers within the NHS must be dismantled to facilitate widespread adoption of technology as quite often change doesn’t filter down to the teams responsible for procurement, innovation, and digital transformation. “It’ll be interesting to see how the new 10-year plan aims to solve the problems highlighted by Darzi and whether we’ll actually see real changes happening to tackle inequality and improve healthcare for everyone.” https://lnkd.in/ebxj-AD6

As the budget unfolds I'm particularly interested in how much of the promises made are reminiscent of the promises in the Spring Budget - where £3.4bn was proposed to be spent on tech over 3 years - as capital allocation, and largely focused on capital purchases such as MRI scanners with revolutionary AI. So today the pre-budget news has dropped that we get an additional £1.5bn in capital funding next year to spend on new surgical hubs and scanners, and emphasis on investment == productivity mandate. Familiar? Yes, this reads a bit like the priorities of the Spring Budget. Good news it's higher in NHS 2025/26 (which means it doesn't exist until 1st April 2025 at earliest). But the worrying news is that it smells like a short term 1 year commitment, that offers uncertainty in an NHS that is all too familiar with a 1 year bung and then a requirement to "work shit out the years after" (that's not actually a quote but it may as well be) when tech is rarely a one off cost. All too often we've seen a one year velvet allocation (such as the £30m Health Tech Adoption and Acceleration Fund) create little traction with commissioners and providers also hammered with X% annual savings targets coming from the clenched fist in the other hand. Lots more to unfold over the coming days but so far this stinks of i) emperors new clothes, ii) more sticking plasters etc.
