The PR Week award nominations have been announced this week (big PR industry awards) And, as usual, the big agencies with the big budget clients are forefront. I’m not taking away the work they do, because often it’s brilliant. But they usually have massive budgets and a team of people working on them. What these awards overlook is the incredible small business owners who are using PR too. The ones who are using it to grow their business, highlight their expertise, connect with new audiences and get known for what they do. Some of the results from the businesses I work with speak for themselves. - What about my DIY PR Member who's about to announce (another) huge retail partnership that's a result of her Christmas PR activity from last year? - Or the member who is now stocked in Liberty after the buyer spotted them in a magazine - Or the member who is now paid to speak as an expert in their field, having joined The PR Set with no experience in her sector - Or the member who used PR as part of her marketing strategy for her book launch (that hit the best seller charts) - Or my 1-2-1 Accelerator client who secured a six page feature, has been featured in several top tier titles, created new revenue streams as a result of her PR and collaborated with some mega brands - Or the member who used her brilliant PR in her very successful crowdfunder campaign. (which resulted in her being overfunded) -Or the member who has consistent PR over the past 8 months and is growing her business month on month -Or my 1-2-1 Accelerator client who hit the ground running launching her business and being featured in several key publications as well as creating content for a large platform - Or the member who delivered her first TedX Talk -Or the member who has done so well building his profile as a lead name in his industry, he's now doing workshops at the most prestigious festivals, working with corporate clients and has his own column in a magazine (and so much more) They don’t have the budget to enter these awards (and they shouldn’t either as it’s not going to do anything for their business)... So here is The PR Set’s award to all you amazing businesses who are smashing their PR. I see you and I’m proud of you!

This freelance social media manager messaged me saying they’re overworked and underpaid - should they go back to their 9-5? 😓 ⬇ The classic thing you will have heard people say is ‘well just charge more’ - but how do we actually get from being underpaid and overworked to being paid what we’re actually worth? Because 🚨 spoiler alert 🚨 - you can’t just turn around to your clients and say ‘I’m doubling my rate’, expect them to throw you a party and send you an early payment 👋 I’m Katy, I run a 6 figure marketing agency and I’ve made every mistake under the sun to get me to where I am today I used to be this sad freelancer - and it took active steps to craft a journey out of being stressed and badly paid. 1️⃣ The first thing you’re going to do is look at your most successful work. What made it successful and how can you shout about your results? If you don’t have great results to shout about - you might want to go back a step - I’ll have more tips on this soon, so make sure to give me a follow. 2️⃣ Put this information into a super concise portfolio that shows how valuable you are as a social media manager. Make sure you put ✨ examples, results and links to your content ✨ - this is something I always see missing. 3️⃣ Then you’re going to pitch pitch pitch to new clients that are either within the same niche or a niche you know you can nail - and you’re going to go in with your higher price point - but you’re also going to offer a slightly smaller package and a slightly higher package to give your customer choice. Then in your discovery or first pitch call - you’re going to tell them which package is right for them and why - really relate your offer to the company and how you can help them. 🤔 Don’t know what rates you should be charging? 😍 Employers LOVE creative writing... The amount of people I've spoken to in high-up roles (I'm looking at the wonderful Sophie Cross; JUST BOUGHT HER 'A course, of course,' COURSE and it's amazing). Sophie did a lil masterclass with Word Tonic - the community of 800+ GEN-Z copywriters - a while back and I remember her saying something that REALLY stood out. Something along the lines of 'I don't care TOO much about someone's portfolio if they've got some amazing personal creative projects they're working on too." Something like that. And it stuck. Love the unexpected. B2B marketing might have a rep for being dull and only relevant to LinkedIn but look! Here's Sage, on TikTok, appealing to small business owners with very watchable snippets that have had me totally sucked in. Yes, you heard me right. Accounting meets TikTok. This is actually from a little while back but Sage obviously knew who they wanted to talk to, where those people were and what kind of content would get their attention. My challenge to both of us today: ✨ Find an insight about your audience (like "huh?... they're on TikTok") ✨ Turn up where they are ✨ Dare to do something different I'm going after my nemesis - cold email. LinkedIn Management doesn’t work well for low ticket offers. You can’t send all those DM’s just to have people buy a $30 per month membership. It’s not sustainable - unless you have a big upsell that brings in the real numbers. Or if you run ads - which is a different route anyway. The investment to have someone run your account for the entire month… And write all your content… Plus send all the messages… Would need you to sell dozens of those memberships every month. Even then you barely break even. But if you sell just 1-2 high ticket offers per month… You make a strong return and it makes sense to keep the deal going. So if you’re looking to save time and have someone manage your entire account… And if you sell high ticket offers… Message me and let’s see what we can do.
