And that was a wrap! As #apisummit24 completes with over 10,000 attendees from the API community - making it the largest API conference by far - with dozens of awesome product and partner launches to show what we can do with *the API platform for the AI era*... one fundamental question remains open: Are you on the right side of AI? One thing we know for sure... APIs are the common language of LLMs as we build apps and transform our business with {Gen} AI. At Angular, we’ve already invested in three companies building in the AI agent space — one focused on functional agents (still in stealth) and two building infrastructure for composable agent architectures. A key part of executing during the growth phase of startups is methodically evolving from a single product to a multi-product platform. Wiz is a great example of this in practice. Wiz evolved to have multiple products that could be initially sold, with well-defined playbooks for how to expand their footprint with adjacent products A typical mistake I see is companies focusing on getting coverage in multiple Magic Quadrants as a means to justifying that they are a "platform". A second mistake is companies trying to "micro-monetize" by charging for every module. As a buyer, this infuriates me because I feel nickel & dimed, but worse, "micro-sales" are tough on channel partners & procurement. IMHO, to be a platform requires the following: 1. Landing a well-defined initial use case, with a bias towards 1 SKU that's fully capable versus lots of micro-SKU's 2. Methodically expanding into adjacent use cases that can capture additional budget 3. Providing a seamless buyers and sellers journey for this land+expand Using Horizon3 as an example: 1. Our initial well-defined use case is Autonomous Pentesting. There is a clear budget we capture - the dollars spent on pentesting consultants, where if you run 3 or more pentests per year, you're saving money by shifting to a NodeZero subscription that lets you run as many pentests as you want. More over, there's a single SKU that allows you to run a battery of tests - infrastructure pentests, IAM-specific tests, various operational scenarios, CISA KEV-specific tests, etc 2. We have a roadmap of adjacent use cases that capture additional budget. - We started with a PCI-DSS offering that targeted a well-defined compliance budget that consultants poorly served - The NodeZero Tripwires targets a well-defined threat detection budget - Our forthcoming GRC Insights product targets a different, well-defined compliance budget. Etc. 3. We are maniacal about maintaining a seamless buyers' and sellers' journey to minimize sales effort and buyer friction. - It starts with the UX. In principle, a customer shouldn't even realize they're using a second or third product, it should feel like one integrated experience with feature flags that enable new capabilities based on license entitlements - There are well-defined triggers that introduce new products as free trials for the customer. For example, if you run 12 pentests within a month or two, you're a great candidate for GRC Insights, which will allow you to understand your security posture over time and produce security posture narratives - Each adjacent product must have a well-defined ROI to help our champions justify the purchase of that capability. In a recession-like market, assume your enterprise software sale is a CFO-sale, which means you need to articulate your ROI in a language the CFO can understand and value.
