How can you improve voiceover recordings with de-essing?
Whilst plugins and EQ adjustments can help to fix harsh sibilance it's always worth considering the state or level of relaxation of the vocalist. If in the case of a voiceover artist, nervous and stressed in a session, this tension causes them to become more sibilant than they normally would be then do all you can to calm down and relax. Often overlooked, this sibilance is a result of the tip of the tongue unnaturally pushing against the alveolar ridge. The more stress, the more tension throughout the body including the jaw and tongue. I've worked with hundreds of vocalists to reduce tension in sessions to achieve a much more pleasing sound without the need to resort to software fixes.

How can you improve audio quality for recordings in poor environments?
These are all great tips. It's worth using a simple sound meter (even an app on your phone) to help with finding the quietest space to record. In addition to carefully getting in close on the mic, finding the naturally quietest space in the room with the help of a visual meter will improve the signal-to-noise ratio making the audio easier to deal with in post. This way, if you are applying any noise reduction, it's likely to sound more transparent. Remember, the listener doesn't care how you achieve the results but in pro-audio (especially in voiceover) any processing needs to be transparent. If, for example, we can hear noise reduction deteriorating the voice or a noise gate kicking in and out, the processing has failed.
