For me, there are only really two types of recruiter ... 'Sideline' recruiters and 'Embedded' recruiters. Sideline recruiters - generally on the outside, looking in. Will refer to themselves as ‘specialist’ but are too transactional in their approach to build a network of any substance. Will often make short-term decisions due to fear of missing targets and will ultimately burn bridges. Embedded recruiters - you guessed it - are embedded within their industries. Part of the ecosystem. Their knowledge of their market goes way being able to recite the ‘science’, 'the tech' or 'the leading companies'. It’s knowing whose hiring and why/when/how they hire. Having your finger on the pulse with long-term partnerships prioritized above all else. Both types of recruiter are able to make placements and score fees. I know this first-hand as I regretfully started my own recruitment career way more 'sideline' than 'embedded'. It's these experiences that have helped shape the way we approach recruitment at Metric. So much so that we made 'Partnerships' a company value and doubled down on training everyone in the business to be fully embedded within their industry. Laser focused on building a meaningful network and long-term relationships. Tenure within your industry certainly helps. As expected, both temporary and permanent placements decreased again in November 2024. At the same time, continued redundancies means that there are more candidates available to place. A few recruiters have mentioned that they’ve seen hiring take a positive turn so far in December, and ideally, this continues into the new year when hiring is more likely to pick up. No clear sign of what’s to come but one thing is clear: Sourcing and nurturing candidates ahead of time can only improve your chances of placing them once hiring starts to pick up. In Q2 of this year in the UK the average Perm Consultant made 4 placements and the average Temp Consultant made 6 placements. (UK) When we looked at the consultants at the Top 5 agencies on Recruiter Insider for Candidate Experience, we discovered that: 🚀 the average Perm Consultant there made 5 placements 🚀 the average Temp Consultant made 10 placements. In Q2 alone, the agencies with the highest candidate experience scores made 1 extra Perm placement per consultant and an 4 extra temp placements per consultant. Highlighting as always the impact candidate experience has on your placement numbers. The data doesn’t lie, an improved candidate experience means more placements. 2 days at the Expo in Birmingham re-affirmed the opportunity emerging tech presents, but uncertainty remained as to where to invest. In a challenging market regardless of your industry sector or operation, the conversation around AI and automation has been presented as a timely silver bullet to productivity. But don't make the mistake of confusing productivity with what you are billing in an immediate context. Productivity can simply mean having more time to perform valuable activities. Productivity is quality as well a quantity. Dries said during his talk on the LaunchPad stage that "AI and Automation will not replace recruiters........but the Recruiters who use AI and automation will likely replace those who do not." And this is true. But what you use and where you use it in your business will be the decisions that make compelling differences to your success and the experiences you create for your customers. During Dries' talk D.W.I.G.H.T caught a lot of peoples attention and you could literally see the cogs whirring in brains. But while D.W.I.G.H.T's capabilities are broad, where he excels he isn't for everyone. This comes back to investment. When looking at any tech for your business, consider how it enables your desired future state and where your services are heading. What is the cost benefit? Where and how does it sit in our existing tech stack? How will you measure the impact? Who will ensure it lands with your customers and staff? I was fascinated by a discussion on Radio 2 today, Saturday 18th May, with Dermot O’Leary, Tom Hanks, and Tim Peake. Tom Hanks asked astronaut Tim Peake about the next great leap in human development, and the answer was surprising - 3D printing in space. In 2014, the International Space Station introduced the first 3D printer, leading to the production of tools and replacement parts in zero gravity. This breakthrough has evolved, now enabling the printing of human cells and organs in space, addressing organ shortages globally. The cardiovascular system contains many hollow and thin elements that cannot be printed on Earth without complex scaffolding to support the structures. With zero gravity, no such restriction apply in space, and pharmaceutical companies have thrown themselves into developing this technology. Rich Boiling, a project developer, highlighted the impact, stating the goal is to solve the organ shortage crisis, saving countless lives. Furthermore, advancements in protein growth in space could revolutionize disease research, potentially enhancing treatments for conditions like cancer and MS. The prospect of printing whole organs in space is on the horizon, with commercial applications expected around 2035. This innovation not only signifies a medical breakthrough but also offers hope for millions worldwide.
