The charitable arm of health and social care don't know where to turn to meet yet another hike in costs. We are unable to put up our prices or invest in technology that create efficiencies....our 'product' is our people and they play a vital role in protecting the most vulnerable in our society. The implications of the Autumn Budget and the Employment Rights Bill for charities like Alternative Futures Group are huge. We have spent years subsidising the shortfall in funding. We have been doing all we can to play our part in protecting high quality support for vulnerable people with learning disabilities and mental health conditions, but the sector needs action now to secure its future. The social care workforce is 1.6m people and the NHS workforce is 1.4m people. In the budget The Chancellor announced a £22.6bn increase in NHS funding to cover "day-to-day" running costs and social care received £600m in grant funding. Social Care continues to be a secondary concern and those with a disability are at the bottom of that list too. Please support AFG and other charities by signing this open letter to The Chancellor.

In all Kingsgate’s financial recovery work for the NHS, there’s a clear common theme at present. Hospital trusts and wider care systems up and down the country are seeking our specialist support on workforce planning – understanding levels of demand and then deploying the right staff through effective rostering. This process identifies opportunities to make better use of resources and reduce unnecessary spending on overtime or temporary doctors and nurses. It’s an area where we have significant experience and expertise, working with many NHS organisations to help them save very large sums. #NHS #productivity #staffing

Meet the Menopause Friendly Independent Panel 🤝 Suzanne Banks CBE is a retired chief nurse, currently working as non-executive director in an ambulance trust and with an independent organisation on digital quality assurance. She recently finished a project with NHS England as clinical lead on their national menopause programme. Suzanne is keen that organisations and companies learning from each other, saying, “The work we’ve seen so far in terms of menopause support has been nothing short of inspirational. The thing I love to see the most is when organisations adopt best practice from each other – some tell us in their applications they’ve done this. It’s not about sitting on your own initiatives and keeping them secret, but about learning what works and sharing this as good practice. I think it would be lovely to see even more of this going forward. It’s wonderful to see an increase in support for menstruation and menstrual health issues starting to come in. These can impact people for a number of years and be quite significant in a lot of cases. Essentially, if you want to retain your talent then offering the right support is essential." Urgent call to address devastating impact of budget on care and support services New The Care Provider Alliance survey data from over 1,180 care providers reveals the devastating impact of recent Budget changes on the social care sector. The combined effect of National Insurance changes and National Living Wage increases threatens the very survival of essential care services across England. Key Survey Findings: • 73% will refuse new care packages from local authorities/NHS • 57% will hand back existing contracts • 22% planning to close entirely • 64% forced to make staff redundant • 92% must increase rates for self-funders The human cost is staggering. Hundreds of thousands of vulnerable adults who rely on homecare, supported living, residential care, and specialist support face uncertain futures. "We have made it through a global pandemic and cost of living crisis only to be shut down by the very government that we hoped would save us. This is not just about business viability - it's about the lives of hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people who rely on these essential services." - Survey Respondent Sector-Wide Impact: 🏠 Homecare Services: • Many people face reduced care, risking increased hospitalisations • Rural areas particularly vulnerable • 42.9% providers will need to shorten care visits 🏥 Care Homes: • 77.6% reducing/stopping maintenance • 79.7% halting capital investment • Severe financial pressures threatening stability 👥 Workforce Implications: In addition to job losses: • 76% cutting staff training • 86% unable to maintain wage differentials • 64% stepping back from Real Living Wage Professor Vic Rayner OBE, Chair of the Care Provider Alliance said: “The £600m announced for social care won't touch the sides of a £2.8bn cost burden identified by the Nuffield Trust. Without adequate support, services will close, care providers will stop delivering public services, and care workers will lose their jobs." URGENT CALL TO ACTION: The Care Provider Alliance urges: 1. Immediate exemption from employer NI contribution changes 2. Full funding for National Living Wage increases 3. Sustainable long-term funding settlement We wrote to the Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday to share these findings and urge him to act. We have also shared a letter about the survey with other key stakeholders. The Homecare Association wrote to the Secretary of State The Rt. Hon. Wes Streeting MP and other senior ministers on 11 November to raise serious concerns about the impact of the Budget on homecare providers and to call for exemption from NI changes and enough funding to cover costs.
