We all know that more is needed to make further and faster progress on digital transformation in the NHS. In partnership with NHS Confederation, we spoke to digital healthcare leaders to understand the challenges facing ICBs in implementing digital programmes in health and care. We identified five key areas where improvements could be made to accelerate the pace and effectiveness of digital programmes for patients, staff and systems. Todays report from the Innovation Ecosystem Programme (IEP) outlines ways the NHS can further develop and implement innovations in healthcare. There is an opportunity to embed the report’s recommendations into the forthcoming 10-year health plan, they include: Building skills, capabilities and culture and unlocking time the help the NHS workforce prepare for future ways of working. Developing commercial approaches to share value and adoption in testing innovation. Building robust evaluations to assess the impact of innovations. The recent Lord Darzi report recognises the NHS is in dire need of a #digitaltransformation. The report highlights how our nation’s health service is in the most perilous position since its inception in 1948. Core recommendations include a move from hospitals to community care, and a greater emphasis on prevention and training. Solutions offered include:  ✅️ The transition from analogue to a digital NHS   ✅️ Moving more care from hospitals to communities   ✅️ Focusing efforts on prevention over sickness    Reflecting on the simplicity of the original 1948 concept for a National Health Service, it places the family doctor as central to delivery. We believe #VR training for GPs and support staff is crucial in addressing the NHS training crisis. Here is an example of exactly that. 💷 Autumn Budget 2024: what does it mean for NHS digital transformation? 💷 The Autumn Budget included £2bn investment in NHS technology and digital essential services. As Sophie Burton-Jones explains in her blog, while this is welcome news and will support our "tilt towards technology” Lord Darzi has called for, many have called for more clarity on how the additional investment will be spent and used to improve efficiency and patient outcomes. Also commenting on the NHS tech budget, techUK Vice-Chair of the Health and Social Care Council, Charlotte Lewis says: “Questions have been raised about whether the £2bn technology investment in the budget is new money given the Spring Budget allocated £3.4bn for technology with £2bn for EPRs. But if we are to believe what Rachel Reeves said the money allocated in March was “monopoly money” so on that logic, it’s new because it’s real. That aside – the real question is “what kind of money is it?”. There needs to be sufficient “capital and revenue” funds available to support the successful implementation of digital transformation projects, and importantly, there ought to be transparency on where the money goes and what it is spent on to ensure it is used to make a positive impact.” As ever the devil will be in the detail.
