www.gvvt.org I own three preserved vintage buses from the former Midland Scottish (2) and Tayside (1) fleets, both of which I extensively restored myself from derelict condition with no expense spared! The first of these is a 1984 Alexander RL bodied MCW Metrobus with the Cummins L10/ Voith 851 drive configuration. I grew up with these vehicles and later worked on this particular bus and its sister vehicles at Larbert road depot with First.

The second vehicle is a 1980 Alexander AYS bodied Leyland Leopard (Leyland 0.680/SCG drive line). Despite being delivered new to the Fife company, this particular vehicle transferred to Midland and was used extensively from my local depot of Balfron, hence this particular vehicle also has a "personal" connection.

It is simply a joy to take a withdrawn vehicle in a state of disrepair and restore it to its former glory. If anybody ever aspires to test their practical engineering skills, patience and determination to the limit, bus restoration will certainly fulfil the criteria!

Despite being classified as a class 5 private vintage bus, as with my past projects, work exceeds the minimum DVSA standards by a considerable margin and all tasks are documented according on the vehicle inspection sheets and audit documentation based on the PSV Operators Licence scheme standards.

Projects

  • National Express Dundee- Took full charge of USC 138 ZF Rear axle safety check and analysis- Measurement of axle portal wear/ relationship to bearing failure.

Using precision instruments such as micrometers and vernier callipers, I undertook initially a hub end float check on the Volvo B7/ B7L/ B10BLE fleet fitted with the ZF AV-132 rear axle. Where the end float detected was in excess of the prescribed tolerance, I stripped each hub, personally cleaned and analysed the wheel bearings and conducted an axle portal measurement over the circumference of the inner and outer wheel bearing lands. Where the end float detected was in excess of the prescribed tolerance, I stripped each hub, personally cleaned and analysed the wheel bearings and conducted an axle portal measurement over the circumference of the inner and outer wheel bearing lands. If this was found to be within the prescribed wear specification, the hub was rebuilt and pre-load tensions and end floats set as per the manufacturer (Powertrain-ZF) bulletin specification. Those outwith tolerance were referred to the Depot Engineering Manager for his consideration and were, in all cases, replaced with new axle tube turrets / portals.

  • Arriva Scotland West- Dennis Dart Steering Coloumn - End float analysis and modification

I took charge, working under the direction of the Area Fleet Engineer, of recording steering column top bearing end float across the entire Dennis Dart fleet operated by Arriva Scotland West. A top bearing thrust/ retainer plate was supplied by Arriva North East Central Engineering, and I subsequently was charged with fitting these to the vehicles scheduled to be retained in traffic after December 2011, completing relevant documentation and returning this to Arriva North East via the Area Fleet…

  • First Edinburgh- SOP 038 Engineering Compliance

Worked as key team member in implementation of First Group's SOP 038 Engineering Inspection and Compliance system at Larbert, Bannockburn and Livingston depots.

Whilst Midland were already largely compliant with SOP 38, Livingston required remedial attention to elevate the Engineering standards from minimum statutory requirements up to First Group compliance levels.
