CfP: Periodicals, History and Change: a Postgraduate Workshop The Leeds Library, 6 December 2024 This Work In Progress workshop will comprise part of a postgraduate study day at the Leeds Library, the oldest surviving subscription library of its type in the United Kingdom. The day will include a tour of the library as well as opportunities to explore the library’s excellent periodical collection and present your research, before culminating in an evening panel discussion featuring Professor Hazel Hutchison, Professor James Mussell, Dr Mary Ikoniadou and Dr Vic Clarke. We welcome applications for fifteen minute work in progress papers and three minute thesis presentations on periodicals, history and change from any time period, context, or culture. Areas of focus might include: How periodicals change – within and across publications and periods. How periodicals respond to and attempt to affect historical change. How texts change between and within periodical formats. Changing patterns in periodical production and consumption, circulation and readership. Applicants are encouraged to consider methodological issues and comparative facets of their work in order to look beyond the individual case study. To apply, please send the following: University affiliation and thesis title. Summary of delegate’s doctoral research (150 words). If this is not primarily focussed on periodicals, please focus on the place of print culture within the thesis. Which format(s) you would be happy to present (fifteen minute work in progress paper and/ or three minute thesis, if both please indicate your preferred format). Abstract (if interested in presenting a work in progress paper, 250 words). Please submit the above to [email protected] with the subject ‘Leeds Library Postgraduate Workshop’ by the 27th September 2024. A limited number of travel bursaries will be available for postgraduate students presenting at the workshop.

Will be interesting to see how the government responds to Universities UK's blueprint for higher education; I will be checking the detail of the autumn budget! There is a lot of potential if, as the report says, 'stable and effective incentives for universities to collaborate' are put in place.

My research often explores the value and role of lived experience in shaping the PR industry, this article explores the importance of live experience in Government. It is too early to say what impact this will have but one thing is for sure, lived experience matters! #womensworkinPR

RLUK25 Conference 19 - 21 March 2025 The call for papers is now open for the RLUK25 Conference, which will be held in Liverpool from 19-21 March 2025.   The theme of the conference is "Champions of knowledge: Libraries as beacons of trust and integrity". Libraries seek to build their practices on strong foundations of integrity, critical thinking, and ethical values. These foundations underpin a commitment to civic duty, positioning libraries as highly trusted partners and authorities in their communities. In an age of misinformation and disinformation, maintaining information integrity is fundamental to a well-functioning society and democracy. The spread of false narratives, fake news, and censorship poses significant challenges that require a multifaceted approach to address. It is a complex challenge and one in which libraries play a crucial role.   RLUK25 will explore the philosophical and pragmatic challenges for research libraries and their role in upholding the values of trust and integrity. Was fantastic to welcome Darlington Economic Campus colleagues to Teesside University yesterday for a workshop on Place-Based Cultural Change and Creative Policy Making led by my fantastic colleagues Professor Azadeh Fatehrad, Prof Antonia Liguori, Prof Matthew Cotton, Dr Sally Blackburn-Daniels and Dr Michael Mulvihill. Drawing on our interdisciplinary research on public policy and place leadership, we explored how creative tools and visual metaphors can shape our understanding of the North East, focusing on challenges, opportunities, and connections. ✨ Key Highlights: • Participants shared personal reflections using the Pepeha method, connecting themselves to their local landscapes and building a shared understanding of place. • Through interactive activities, we mapped out perceptions of living in the NE, discussing how media and policy shape these views. • Using creative materials, participants visualized opportunities (balloons), challenges (stones), and bridges to symbolize connections for growth. • We ended the day with a powerful reflection session, gathering key takeaways and discussing how these insights can inform future strategies. #PolicyMaking #PlaceBasedApproaches #NorthEast #CommunityEngagement #CreativeStrategies #Leadership #PlaceMaking #DEC #TeessideUniversity #CollectivePlaceLeadership Zak Anderson-Watt Ellie Moir Beth Russell Matthew Watson Dr. Laura Sillars
