Some candidates are showing flexibility, but it will be interesting to see if businesses can retain this talent as the market shifts. I have spoke to a lot of people over the last quarter and asked how they are finding the market. Here is the general consensus from those conversations; 👉 There is currently a lot of senior people on the market 👉 There is still a lot of cautiousness around spending 👉 Companies are overworked and understaffed 👉 Headcount approval is getting harder and harder 👉 Some say this is a worse market they have seen in 40 years 👉 There are pockets of work in Australia 👉 The hands-on hard to find skillsets are still in demand 👉 Value value value is the best way to engage at present How are you currently finding the market?

People will remember those companies who treated them well at interview stage. We are firmly in an employers market but it is still fundamentally important to set a great first impression when a candidate enters a interview process with your company. ✅ Do: - Provide regular updates (No news is news) - Ensure a smooth process with the 1st and follow up interviews within a week of each other - Spend the first part of the interview selling your company and fully explaining the role - Where possible meet face to face and give your potential hire the time of day ❌ Don't: - Keep the candidate in the dark for weeks on end - Have a one way question question question style interview - Involved 7/8 stake holders with multiple rounds - Low ball a candidate after the interview Remember this is a very small market and reputations can quickly form. How many times do you check your emails a day? 10? 20? 50? 100? You're not alone. Meta-studies consistently show that on average, office workers spend around 23% of their time at work on their emails. And we email users will check our inboxes anywhere between 11 times to 36 times per hour! This is exacerbated by having our email applications open in the background and flitting in and out everytime we're notified of a fresh mail in our inbox. While email is great for correspondence, it's a productivity killer if we keep diving in and out, removing our attention from the task at hand. Speaking personally, it takes me easily 5/10 minutes to get into the flow of a task and that flow is interrupted everytime I tab out to my emails. So what's the answer? 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗿. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲. Reading and responding to your emails at fixed points in the day is a far more productive way of balancing your attention and efficiently completing your day's agenda. What if something business critical comes through by email? From my experience, nothing is so business critical that it can't wait an hour or two. And if it's that important - the person will likely call you anyway! FYI - while writing this post, I left my email application open and found myself tabbed out 6 times to check a new email pop up coming through. This is despite me telling myself at the start that I would fight the urge to check! Do you disagree?

Quick tip for consultants on the market for a new role 📊 Track your applications & don't spam apply to hundreds of jobs, especially if they're not relevant Create a system THAT WORKS FOR YOU My recommendation would be to create an excel sheet to track, put down company names, key people of interest in the business (direct hiring manager or TA), date of application, connect in with them on LinkedIn & leave a note when connecting. This will allow you to recap each week on where you applied to & follow up with those who connect in with you on LinkedIn ✔ Be strategic in your approach ♟ Every job application is littered with applications that clearly haven't read past the job title. Try think outside the box, don't spray and pray ❌ Do what others probably are not doing & the results will come ✔

Perhaps one of the scariest parts is meeting all of your new work colleagues and introducing yourself to them. So today, my cat Toast, has kindly offered a demonstration of what to do in your new workplace. Here are my top 3 takeaways from her roleplay: 1. 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 While you may work together, you shouldn't expect your colleagues to turn up unannounced in your home to eat your food. If you do not let them know this early, they may take advantage of your kibble. 2. 𝗕𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 Making sure your voice is heard early on, is crucial to getting yourself noticed. Yeowling, meowing, and hissing are all acceptable forms of communication and should be done aggresively. 3. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘄𝘀 It's a dog eat dog world out there.
