Senior Fellow in Management Practice Dr Alex Connock from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford has written an article for The Conversation UK titled 'We're the ultimate creators, not AI': Will.i.am on why we're worrying too much about machine-made tunes'. The article discusses the response and concerns from the music industry after the introduction of AI technologies that are putting out music. 📢 New report highlights CSA Catapult's impact on the UK economy    A new report, published today by the Welsh Economy Research Unit at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, highlights the economic contribution of Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult.   📈 The economic impact report found that:   CSA Catapult’s R&D projects have contributed over £600m GVA to UK economy 4,718 jobs created or safeguarded by CSA Catapult projects CSA Catapult supported 156 R&D projects and worked with 215 SMEs and 40 large organisations £15m of external R&D funding received by CSA Catapult generates a long-term benefit to UK productivity of between £56m and £86m On average CSA Catapult helped improve TRLs by 1.8 across 81 projects   Read more: https://lnkd.in/gEVgq6dN #Innovation #Technology #Economy #Report #Compound #Semiconductors Innovate UK Catapult Network

Last month, we organised a Generative AI Hackathon at Imperial in partnership with 10 Downing Street's Evidence House, where our students collaborated with civil servants to develop GenAI-based solutions for government challenges. We recently spoke with some of our students to hear their thoughts on the experience of working with officials to address real-world problems. William Bolton is a PhD researcher at Imperial College as part of the AI for Health CDT programme. His research under the supervision of Professor Pantelis Georgiou, Professor Alison Holmes, and Dr Timothy Miles Rawson focuses on creating artificial intelligence (AI) based clinical decision support systems, that utilise routinely collected electronic health record data, to optimise antibiotic prescribing, improve infection management and ultimately tackle the emerging global threat of antimicrobial resistance. The hackathon was an excellent opportunity for William to step outside of PhD research and work on other exciting and potentially influential projects, alongside his teammates: Akash Paul, Hebah Pervaiz, Andrea Di Francia, James Blackshaw, and Gareth Lamb. According to William, the Hackathon allowed him to network with many civil servants who provided a unique perspective on the projects, as well as individuals from the partner organisations. 'We enjoyed coding our ideas into reality and utilising the generous computing resources that were made available. Finally, it was fantastic that our project got to the final and we could pitch and demo our solution in front of a large audience’, he said. The problem this group tackled was detecting, monitoring, and briefing ministers on any potential emerging biological threats. Their solution, initially focused on flu, consolidated global information, and presented it in three distinct ways. Firstly, a weekly summary grounded in trusted resources was produced using retrieval-augmented generation and an LLM. Secondly, entity extraction, sentiment analysis, and daily insights were provided through the NewsCatcher API. Finally, the weekly and daily summaries were compared to historical data to analyse the emergence of any potential biothreats.   By collating numerous trusted sources, extracting key figures, and conducting analyses, the team’s solution offered a unique and comprehensive view on emerging biothreats for key decision makers.
