⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Celebrating and Appreciating! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Last week I was privileged to deliver a workshop to the Senior and Extended Leadership Team at the University of South Wales. The topic? Breathtaking Communication for Information Technology 30 minutes of presenting was followed by 30 minutes of great questions. What presentation/Q&A ratio do you appreciate in a workshop? Here are some questions I used to guide me:       Who is my audience?       How many are in the room?       What is their relationship to and knowledge of each other?       How much common ground do they share?       What is their level range? Since writing Breathtaking Communication – Tools and Techniques for Everyday Leaders my confidence in my subject-matter expertise has grown enough for me to allow as much time as possible for questions. However, if the audience is large and doesn’t know each other well, if they are from multiple industries and a range of levels is represented, I will present for longer and allow less time for questions. I always invite people to get in touch afterwards if they want to know more. Of course, they could always just read or listen to Breathtaking Communication, book me for training at their company or have 121 coaching. Isn’t it exciting that no one needs to be ill-equipped to engage their audience with power, clarity and confidence? No audience needs to suffer through a poor presentation or tedious meeting! I think we are up against it.... though there is hope, possibility and opportunity, not doom and gloom! But I do think that us 'Improvement' people.... of all flavours .... CI/lean/Agile/Design Thinking/Critical Thinking/Systems Change/Change Mgmt/Transformation etc....... are up against a system where making things better is not the name of the game! At the same time so many of the people working in this space want to do just that - make the world of our work, our mahi, what we do a better place - for everyone...... ..... I ask then ..... What do we do???? We are not (generally) the money holders, the ones with the major resources or in the first instance the decision makers...... So .... Team..... What are we going to do???? What are we going to do??? [P.s. I do have a poster that says this | The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free, that your very existence is an act of rebellion, Albert Camus ... 😉 ] Working on it!

AI isn’t just a technological advancement; it’s a leadership challenge—especially when it comes to ethics and governance. This morning, I had the opportunity to lead a lively discussion on Ethics & Policy as part of our AI Adoption Programme. We spent 90 minutes exploring what it really means to use AI responsibly in the workplace, examining 6 different real-life scenarios that are almost certainly playing out in nearly every organization today. The goal was to move beyond compliance, moving to a mindset where AI use is empowered, informed, and above all, accountable. We explored what needs to be considered in deciding when and how AI should be used, how important it is to have that "human in the loop," and the ongoing tension between risk and reward. One thing became clear: Generative AI is full of grey areas. Companies that rely solely on AI governance policies to guide employees are setting themselves up for confusion, covert use of AI, and, ultimately, a cap on innovation. Jonathan Garrett - Our programme together on Behavioural Safety programme came to mind—we drew parallels with the Safety Culture Maturity Curve when talking about AI use. There’s so much crossover in how we think about risk, responsibility, and culture!! Daniel Hobson - The "Billable Hour" was again a topic of discussion!

Last week, I facilitated the TransforMe Learning & Leadership Solutions Personal Mastery Lab as part of a senior leadership intervention for the incredible team at Sapiens. Each time I facilitate a TransforMe lab, I am reminded of the huge power of the process, the value of real authentic conversations over role plays and the impact of a “shake up in a sensitive manner”… When I see each leader not just taking away key implementation insights to unleash their potential - but actually experiment in the lab and discover options they never knew existed - those are the moments I truly feel grateful to be in this space. It’s amazing to see leaders who may start of “transactionally” and perhaps a bit sceptical… and then to witness them unleash themselves - wow… what an amazing group this was! That’s how we broke down walls, and turned authenticity and vulnerability into a transformative experience. Embracing Resilience Step by Step (Part 1 of 5) 🌟 I wanted to share a few thoughts around resilience that have been rolling around in my head. These are spurred from the Mental Wellness Society that is currently developing some amazing resources around resilience. Attaining resilience is a gradual and ongoing process. Little by little, every day we aim to improve. Here are the first three steps (of fifteen) to help you get started today: 1. Self-awareness: Take a moment to slow down. Breathe. Seek to better understand your current emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and how you respond to stress or adversity. Are you limiting yourself based on old thoughts that are no longer relevant? Recognize your coping mechanisms and patterns of behavior. In agile terms, seek improved inner transparency. 2. Positive mindset: Cultivate a positive outlook on life. See all the opportunities and wonderful people and circumstances around you. Take a moment each day to focus on gratitude. Develop your internal optimism, even in challenging situations. 3. Acceptance: Acknowledge that adversity and setbacks are a part of life. Learn to accept and adapt to the changes and uncertainties that come your way. To quote the serenity prayer, "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Resilience isn’t about avoiding difficulties but learning to navigate and bounce back from them. Start your journey today! 🌱 Over to you. What else? The need to always “be there” used to keep me up at night. 🕓 I spent years convinced that great leadership meant being endlessly available, firefighting, having an opinion around everything. If someone needed support, I’d be there. If they veered off track, I’d coach them back. I thought that was how I’d make a real impact. But, guess what? I ended up burning out… and ironically, showing up less for my team. One night, I was lying awake, running through a to-do list in my head, and it hit me: this obsession with “being needed” was backfiring. I was doing it out of habit, not because it was effective—or sustainable. ❌ 👉 And above all: It was MY need to be needed. Not my team’s. We all have attachments to these ideas of “success” that we barely even see or question. Whether it’s a fixation on proving ourselves, needing recognition, or shouldering every burden alone, they can turn into self-imposed prisons. Here’s my biggest takeaway: Sometimes, letting go of control is actually the most empowering thing we can do for ourselves—and our teams. I understand what it is like to have your contributions go unnoticed and unrecognised while playing a critical role in helping your organisation reach their objectives. You are the glue that holds teams together, navigating the complexities, budgets, and stakeholder demands. A conductor, orchestrating the moving parts to deliver on time and on budget.  But let's be honest. It's not an easy job. You are constantly under pressure, juggling other’s priorities on top of your own and overcoming the challenges throughout the project lifecycle.  When things go wrong, you take the hit. Even when it is not your fault, you will get the blame. When you successfully deliver the project, your effort is overshadowed by the visible contributions of the team, even though you managed the team towards making it happen.  How long more are you going to put up with this?
