You're faced with unexpected operational challenges. How can you protect your long-term strategic roadmap?
When faced with unexpected operational challenges, the first thing I do is take a step back and assess the situation calmly. It’s easy to get caught up in firefighting, but I always keep my long-term goals in mind. I focus on solving the immediate problem in a way that aligns with where we’re headed, ensuring we stay on track. Communication with the team is key – making sure everyone knows the plan and feels empowered to adapt without losing sight of our broader objectives. Challenges often present opportunities to refine our strategy, so I try to see the upside and use it as a chance to strengthen the roadmap, rather than derailing it.

You're tasked with leading a project mid-progress. How can you earn the trust of a new client?
When stepping into an ongoing project, you should begin by actively listening to your client’s mission and any concerns or challenges they are facing. This ensures you align with their goals right from the start. You must respect the existing work and identify opportunities to add value without disrupting the progress already made. You should also work hard to deliver early wins to demonstrate your capability, which helps build up trust. Make sure you maintain transparent communication by providing regular updates and addressing challenges directly. By integrating your expertise in a way that complements the team’s efforts, you will encourage collaboration and build a strong, trusting partnership with your client.

You're in a Systems Engineering role and want to ask for a raise. What's the best way to approach your boss?
Firstly, you need to tell you managers about your personal goals, and always link them to why you are looking for a salary increase. You currently earn £55K per year, but to buy a bigger house, you need to earn £60K, that's where the conversation should start. Make sure you NEVER approach the discussion by comparing your role to roles in different companies that pay more. Instead, ask your boss what you need to do over the next 6 months to get a salary increase to £60K. This gets rid of "yes" or "no" answers and gives you and your boss a clear and agreed guideline on what needs to happen to get you to £60K. You succeed and get your pay rise and the business feels like they have won because of your excellent contributions. Win-win!!!!
