I am excited to share the bp UK Economic Impact Report for 2023. It spotlights Scotland’s crucial importance to bp and the impact we make not just on the Scottish economy but elsewhere in the UK.  Scotland plays a leading role in our UK business – from our long-standing oil & gas and retail businesses to our planned potential projects in offshore wind and hydrogen.  In 2023, through these activities Oxford Economics estimates that bp:     • generated £2.2 billion in gross value add (GVA) for Scotland  • spent £720 million with Scottish suppliers  • supported 11,000 direct and indirect jobs – that’s 1 in every 260 Scottish jobs bp also made a wider contribution to the UK economy - supporting £17.1 billion in GVA and an estimated total of 81,000 direct and indirect jobs. I’m immensely proud to lead bp’s North Sea oil and gas business in Scotland as we approach a milestone 60 years in September.  Over the past six decades bp has helped pioneer the UK oil and gas industry, building a home-grown supply chain, investing in skills and supporting local communities in the process.  And this report shows that work continues today.   I’d like to thank our staff, suppliers and community partners for their work with bp and I hope like me you will enjoy seeing the impact of your efforts brought to life in our latest report.    bp.com/uk/eir

This landmark agreement marks a significant expansion of our presence on the UK Continental Shelf as it integrates Eni's UK upstream operations with Ithaca Energy, creating a leading production and growth company in the region. The Combination, effective by the second half of 2024, is expected to reach over 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with the potential to organically grow to more than 150,000 boepd by the early 2030s - numbers that testify our long-term commitment to the stability and expansion of the UK’s #energysector. After the successful Vår Energi and Azule Energy combinations, we once again applied our distinctive Satellite Model: lean, focused, and financially independent operations, aimed at creating value through operational and financial synergies. Encouraging to see bp are still investing heavily in the North Sea. Subsea Integration Alliance’s new contract, worth between $50 million and $150 million, is for the Murlach oil and gas development, formerly known as Skua, 240 kilometers east of Aberdeen in the UK sector of the North Sea. The partners in the non-incorporated strategic global alliance highlight that they have pooled resources with BP to develop a technology solution leveraging OneSubsea’s standard equipment, which is said to be simpler to design and quicker to install when compared with traditional configured-to-order subsea systems.

Windfall taxes should be temporary and not become a permanent feature of a fiscal regime. But in the UK, we continue to scare off investors with fiscal instability and our windfall tax on homegrown oil and gas production. The result is that projects are delayed or cancelled, our jobs are threatened, and we become increasingly reliant on imports for our energy. In an increasingly volatile world, this is the wrong path. An informed article from Lukanyo Mnyanda at the Financial Times lays out some key facts. Energy prices have fallen back to levels seen before the invasion of Ukraine, there are no windfall conditions for our domestic oil and gas producers. We have heard from all major political parties that they recognise that the windfall tax must go when prices stabilise, now we need action. With public finances challenged on all fronts, surely we should be encouraging energy businesses and investors to step up and invest in UK energy security and the transition to low carbon energies. The alternative is many more billions of public debt, which will hang over taxpayers for generations to come. It is estimated that the journey to net zero will require £1.4 trillion of investment in the UK by 2050, with the lion’s share coming from the private sector. To seize the opportunities of the energy transition, we need to make the UK an irresistible environment to attract energy investment.

Leadership Views on the State of the Drilling Industry - excellent panel session at the recent IADC / SPE Drilling Conference in Galveston. A succinct article by Stephen Whitfield capturing the essence of this thoughtful panel debate. Kudos to Subodh Saxena who prepared the panel well and managed the debate very professionally as the moderator. Short read article that will bring value to all drillers, drilling engineers and their service providers. Multiple panelists mentioned collaboration as a key tenet for the future of the industry. GREAT BRITISH ENERGY LOCATED IN ABERDEEN.... WHY? Why is #GreatBritishEnergy to be located in Aberdeen? I had presumed it was to be located in the heart (and soul!) of the existing Oil & Gas Energy Industry, where the synergies would be obvious. Co-location would make sense and facilitate close cooperation with the existing Operating companies and the extensive network of Supply chain companies. That would help promote transition of the existing companies businesses and afford a visible way that Energy Jobs could end up in the Clean Energy sector. However, from where I am observing proceedings, it appears that GB Energy are not signalling that constructive interactions with the existing Oil & Gas Operating companies is on the cards.
