Obvious right? agriculture is a critical ally to the food value chain. Kerry’s Health and Nutrition annual trends review was an interesting read especially for those of us looking at the inherent connection between agriculture, food and climate. The authors coined an insightful framework referred to as “an overarching megatrend called Sustainable Nutrition”. The report highlights five focus areas for Sustainable Nutrition, all of which directly impact agriculture and provide insights into AgTech companies but two trends intrigued me the most (using the Kerry terminology and my insights): 🥪 Food waste reduction: From production to plate, strategies to reduce waste at all supply chain stages. This includes better screening and sorting, innovative storage solutions, improved logistics and enhanced planning. 🚛 Resilient supply chains: Climate change, crop disease and economic instability impact crop supply making farming even more challenging. Technology that includes new crop varieties, effective input utilization and climate mitigation can truly affect overall farmer profitability and add value. The team at Kerry is naturally food oriented but we all know that food and agriculture are interlinked. Fully understanding and addressing customer needs (i.e food companies and consumers) will make farmers, agri players and agtech investors even more effective in creating meaningful value. I appreciate that debates about different farming approaches can frequently become polarised, and I would champion organic every step of the way. But ensuring we have a properly considered land use policy, twinned with a robust trade policy and a fair and transparent supply chain, would mean farmers are able to produce the necessary food while protecting our environment and addressing climate change. Largely unable to influence pricing, many farmers have rationalised their production to remain economically viable by cutting costs or increasing yields, frequently both. Even with farm support, all we've seen is lower consumer prices, higher land prices and higher rents, rather than improved farm profitability. In parallel to this development, government has sought to strengthen environmental legislation, which is laudable, but fails to address the underlying tension between the continued need to "run harder and faster" within a free market, while also taking care of the environment. Continuing to ignore this huge disparity in our food and farming systems is reckless. Resolving this complex issue requires an equally colossal shake-up. The nation’s seen huge upheaval in the last eight years. A flawed food system has left the UK at the tipping point of catastrophic environmental and human health crises. We need policies that create jobs, improve rural livelihoods while delivering sustainable and economically viable food and farming systems Restoring this balance and equity requires ambition and vision from Government. The long-term effects of recent policies are still unfolding, but the need for action is urgent. One thing is clear; we must aspire to accomplish more. By considering organic’s four founding principles, our new manifesto identifies solutions that address the huge disparity that exists in current food and farming systems. The Principles of Health, Ecology, Fairness, and care are the roots from which organic agriculture grows and develops. They express the contribution that organic agriculture can make to the world, and a vision to improve all agriculture in a global context. Implementing OF&G’s recommendations would have a massive, beneficial impact on the resilence and fairness of our food system. Organic is a defined farming system and operates to the highest level of compliance to deliver on all four of the principles outlined The recent formal adoption of regulation on nature restoration by the EU shows that, with political will, change is possible. Andy Cato speaks a lot of sense. On budget day where it's all about £££ think about this.. "no economy survives the collapse of its ecosystems and the breakdown of its food supply" This is sadly happening across the world NOW. The evidence is clear. According to today's BBC report, almost a third of the world - 30% - experienced extreme drought for three months or longer in 2023. In the 1980s, the average was 5%. Yet, at the same time as large sections of the land mass have been drying out, extreme rainfall has also increased. The power of synthesis, as demonstrated in this media headline by the very fine pen of Philippa Nuttall. The simple math is that around half of all emissions in a supermarket's value chain come from meat and dairy production. Great move Waitrose & Partners committing to help 2000 UK farmers adopt regenerative practices supported by network of demonstration farms and a commitment to help farmers baseline their impact (positive and negative) on nature and develop and implement plans for improvement. In the past there have been plenty of 'flash in the pan' PR announcements by supermarkets and FMCGs about 'support' for farmers. It feels like a significant minority of companies in 'big food' is finally waking up to the existential environmental and socio-economic threats to the farming base that sustains them. Farming (particularly smallholders and family farms) are right on the frontline of the #climatecrisis (Noting yesterday's research by the Guardian that saw 70% of key scientists state that they believe we are going to get a minimum 2.5C of heating this Century and 50% seeing over 3C - which is societal breakdown territory). But we need more than the rollout of standards/learning to farmers. We need a 'root and branch' review of how reward and risk is allocated across food value chains. Just wrapped up our second quarterly look at regenerative agriculture and food investment activity! Key insights from Q2: 📈 The quarter brought what appears to be an increase in the number of capital commitments to regenerative agriculture and food… but a lag in the amount of capital committed. Only time will tell if the number of deals is a positive and bigger commitments will come or if this is a blip in activity. ⚙️ While VC investment in enabling innovations remained the top investment type, there was great diversity in the technologies invested in. Biologicals remained on top but investments in diverse platforms for data management and measurement followed close behind - highlighting the need for tools that can translate what’s happening on the ground to farmers, corporates, investors and more. 🌳 Public and corporate funding for projects focused on land use change and practice adoption showed up in Q2 and represent a positive sign that the importance of this foundational support is understood more broadly today. The next step is increasing awareness of the critical need to have supply chain and market investment to go in lock-step with investment at the land and farm level. 🚀 Commitments to regenerative projects at the corporate level are virtually skyrocketing. There seems to be a recognition that talking about one's commitment to these projects is good for business. This is not necessarily bad but it does encourage the exploration of which commitments can bring fruitful progress and which are more akin to greenwashing. 🤝 We also see an uptick in the number of partnerships across corporate and non-corporate entities for regeneratively focused projects. This tells me these companies stepping into the space are seeking beneficial collaborations so they don’t have to go it alone. It's also a reminder that there is an opportunity for corporates to partner with and leverage the expertise of those operations that have much deeper experience in regenerative program and market development in order to increase likelihood of success. 🔗 Lots more to dig into - link to full round-up below and in the attached pdf! This is an interesting one from Its Fresh and their brand Rypen. Since joining the company, I’ve learnt so much about fruit, waste, and the global supply chain. It gives an entirely different perspective on what we are asking of supermarkets as consumers, and how that impacts the world. Getting diversity into cropping systems and diets is central to all Hodmedod's British Pulses, Grains & Seeds does. That’s diversity between species (intercropping, agroforestry and the like) and within species (principally through landrace and population cereals). It’s that ‘within species’ work that led to our involvement with UK Grain Lab (I’m a co-founder) - a not-for-profit working to demonstrate what a more resilient, decentralised grain economy might look like. Believe it or not it’s actually illegal for farmers to trade or exchange cereal seeds that aren’t formally registered, and to be registered they have to demonstrate they’re ’distinct, uniform and stable’ (DUS). In other words that they’re sufficiently different from everything else on the market, that within the crop there’s uniformity and that over time they remain unchanged. Cereal populations, with the adaptive capacity genetic diversity brings, are exactly the opposite to this, won’t pass DUS and simply can’t appear on the list. That means a huge resource - critical to the development of the low input farming systems we so desperately need in the face of climate change and biodiversity loss (but not limited to those two issues) - is effectively unavailable to farmers at scale (other than through illegal means or through a slow process of on-farm seed multiplication from plots - which is permitted). UK Grain Lab persuaded the last government to allow for, through a piece of secondary legislation, a 7 year experiment with population seed trade and exchange - we’re using it to experiment with new systems of exchange better suited to small lots and variablity, whilst respecting the underlying principles laid out in current legislation (essentially that farmers get what it says on the seed label and plant breeders - or the originators of new populations - are properly rewarded; those are good things protected by bad law). She also highlights the incredible work of ethnobotanist John Letts, who for several decades has pioneered new approaches to production that make use of genetically diverse cereals. However, we believe that by stripping back the noise, consulting firm overheads and the innovation theatre, a focus on quality and direct support can be how we achieve change in the 3 challenge areas. AgriTech founders have made it clear, they want customers, capital and connections into new markets. So we're optimising everything we build to deliver these outcomes.
