The 2024 PRWeek UK Pay Gap Report has a lot to unpack. Beyond the lack of progress on gender and ethnicity pay equity, the biggest surprise is that the largest PR agencies have never shared their data. At Woodrow, we believe transparency is how we raise the bar—for ourselves and the industry. While looking closely at our own operations can be daunting, it’s necessary. We’re proud of the progress we’ve made—transparent salaries, clear career paths, and a commitment to inclusivity. But we know we’re not perfect. Participating in PRWeek UK's Pay Gap Report, alongside People Like Us, is how we stay accountable and push the industry forward. This could be one of the last Pay Gap Reports before ethnicity pay gap reporting becomes law. With the new Labour Government’s pledge, larger firms will soon be required to report. Let’s hope this changes the landscape, and that pay inequities are taken seriously across the industry. Check out the full report in the comments 👇 #FuturePositive #DEI #PayGapReport #EquitablePay

UK Black Comms Network
One step forward two steps Black? We want to hear your experiences of what it’s like to be Black in PR and comms today. Together with PRWeek UK and Opinium, we are opening our One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey to uncover inequity where it exists, recognise successes in creating a diverse pipeline and retaining talent, and crucially - to provide a benchmark for the industry to make change. The inaugural One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey in 2020 found that almost half of Black communication professionals had never received an internal promotion, with talent having to move to a different agency or company to rise up the ranks. Has progress been made? Are you having a more equitable experience? Are you being hired, recognised and rewarded for your contributions? We need to know so we can shape recommendations to drive change. The anonymous survey takes just 6 minutes to complete. Complete the survey here: https://lnkd.in/eM--X-Fs Kamiqua Lake (nèe Pearce) Founder of UK Black Comms Network says "As the old adage goes: what gets measured gets improved. The industry's focus continues to be on attracting Black talent into entry level roles. We want to understand what progress our industry is making on this and how organisations are rewarding Black talent within their companies." Cannes-did conversations. It's probably the thing I most enjoy about attending the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Sure. I enjoy the educational presentations, the parties, the opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones. But it's the candid conversations I hear around me that often deliver the most joy - and the greatest impact. Milling about after a System1 happy hour that had earlier featured a "fireside chat" with Jon Evans, Rory Sutherland, and Mark Ritson, I listened in on a conversation that Mark was having with Tamara Littleton and Andrew Tindall about some comments Mark had made earlier about brands that "rainbowed" their logos during Pride month (prompted by a column Mark had written previously on the topic). I won't recount the conversation here, because Mark has already done that (see the link to his telling of the story in the comments). What stuck with me, as I witnessed the conversation unfolding, was the power of honest dialogue to foster the opportunity for a transformation in thought and action (with an obvious tip of the hat to the participants who committed to really hearing each other). We know that when it comes to social concerns like advocating for diversity, it’s difficult to move brands from talk to action, and moral arguments, sadly, aren’t enough. In those instances, turning to research can help make a business case for action – which is exactly what System1’s new research does. Beyond moral arguments for inclusion and visibility, the research demonstrates that “gay ads are as effective as any other ad with broad audiences and are much more effective with LGBTQ+audiences.” These findings are similar to SiriusXM Media's Studio Resonate Sonic Diversity research, namely that casting more Black voices in general market spots improves ad favorability with Black listeners, with no negative impact on ad favorability or effectiveness with broader audiences. While discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion with advertisers and brands (and sometimes with each other) can be difficult, they’re not impossible. We need more research to support the moral arguments, but we also need to work at fostering dialogues rather than a debates. We need to listen to be heard. Hats off to Mark, Tamara, and Andrew for doing just that. Here's to more Cannes-did conversations. (Links to Mark's article, Andrew's article, and our sonic diversity research are in the comments below) #SonicDiversity #Inclusion #DEI #LGBT

Can you spot the Gen Z sense of humor? 👀 Humor-driven advertising is becoming a go-to strategy for brands looking to connect with Gen Z, who thrive on playful, relatable, and lighthearted content. A few standout examples: 🏧 Monzo x Greggs: ATM machines dispensing sausage rolls—a quirky, unexpected twist that grabs Gen Z’s attention. A great example of an unexpected partnership experimenting with unique experiences and shareable moments. 🍕 Glide Pizza: Total chaos in a video, developed alongside a creative influencer in a ridiculous outfit offering free pizza via a QR code. It made for authentic and surreal silliness which was primed to go viral! 🥣 Surreal Cereal: Hopping on the "brat" trend intentionally late, this brand embraced self-deprecating humor to connect with an audience that appreciates irony and cultural awareness (as well as authenticity!). What other funny campaigns have you seen? 🤔 #GenZMarketing #HumorInAdvertising #BrandCampaigns #ViralMarketing #CreativeAdvertising #ConsumerEngagement

We hope you Glastonbury goers are almost fully recovered! Festival season is well underway, and events like Glastonbury and Pride have become big moments for brand activation, but whether it’s a pop-up shop or sponsored float, brands often come across as intrusive rather than playing an authentic role. Do purpose-led activations offer a better way? Brands can show they truly understand culture and connect with their audience by supporting causes that create a positive impact and promote a more sustainable cultural ecosystem. For example, the Decathlon’s “No Tent Left Behind” scheme helped festivals save money and festivalgoers enjoy the season more responsibly by enabling them to return their tents. Or, take Jägermeister's Save the Night fund, which supports the struggling nightlife industry. One recipient, Belfast's “Free The Night,” used their award to create a documentary highlighting the cultural value of dance floors and electronic music to engage political stakeholders. This approach could be replicated for festival season where 42 festivals have had to cancel this year due to rising costs. Where do you want to see brands supporting the festival season or have brands grabbed your attention when showing up at festivals this year?
