This was repost of an article published in Spring 2002 after the Post Y2K Dotcom had burst. Gordon Brown had announced a new approach to skills akin to that needed today. So why did it not happen? The world has moved on but too many of those calling once again for action on digital skills, without saying what they mean by digital skills, have not. Updating the skills of those already in the workforce is critical to improving productivity. Most digital trainees (at whatever level) work for under a thousand employers. The rest are with organisations too small to provide in-house training, supervised work experience or pastoral care for apprentices. The role of FE colleges in supporting these, and their trainees, is critical. But attention is still largely focussed on digital inclusion or graduates. How do we change that? Also, how do we engage employers ... large and small? I’d underline one of our final paragraphs: “If we get this right – the benefits for inclusion, fairness, opportunity, growth, families and future generations are huge. … there is a significant economic benefit to investing in digital inclusion and skills, including efficiency savings of £1.4 billion for Government, and an estimated £2.7 billion generated for corporations through filling vacancies requiring basic digital skills. £13.7bn benefit to the economy from investing in community based basic digital skills support.” #CloseDigitalDivide

Bit of a follow up to the ISO drawing frame widget I stood up last week—I've just ported the drawing diff tool I built for the Anneal website over to my personal page. Highlights changes between two drawings, complete with an explanation of how it works. Code is also available on GitHub for anyone who cares to see the actual implementation. Just got a chance to listen to Laura Tacho's talk from LeadDev London, "Measure for Change" covering why you need both qualitative and quantitative data when measuring #developerproductivity. When people measure developer productivity, it's often for the reason of reporting the measurements upstream to make someone above them happy, and to validate that they're doing their manager/director/VP job well. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲, but the improvements themselves must be made by the people doing the work, not those observing them. "We want teams to use data, not just view it. We can do that when we mix quantitative and qualitative data together, because what we don't want is numbers without context..." It's not all non-symbolic AI... I presented today to Accord Project Technology Working Group on recent enhancements to the Template Engine and how TypeScript expressions within templates are compiled and evaluated. Accord Project uses TypeScript over Concerto types (with Concerto also compiled to TypeScript) to provide type-safe logic/calculations for templates; ensuring that a wide array of programming errors are caught at template compilation time, not at runtime. #typesafety #soundness #typescript #templating #legaltech

I struggle (often) to find the right words to talk about our work with Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) because it never feels enough....but I'm going to try. - working on social impact and in social innovation is a privilege, but working on this area, to combat online child sexual abuse and what is the most despicable and depraved crime against the most vulnerable is, for me, a duty above all others. That it has been rising exponentially at a global level is devastating. - Dan S. Adam Groves, the team, leadership, and the analysts at Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) embody everything I admire; huge dedication to the the cause, tenacity and incredibly sharp minds that can see the systemic issues. We owe these people *a lot* because they are working in the background with bravery to keep an awful lot of young people safe and bring some redress to the victims. I need to mention 'innovation'. As a funder in tech for good, we're leant on a lot by partners to help chart a course through the changing landscape of digital. Here, and across our entire Countering Online Harms programme we've done something different. We've understood that some of the world's most important organisations (no, not you meta ironically) haven't had the means to hold space for research and development when they are fighting a rising tide of harms. We asked ourselves back then, what do they actually really need? -... Space. The most precious asset our partners struggled with back in 2018 was time and freedom - the bandwidth and flexibility to explore how to make transformative leaps rather than incremental gains or fighting fire. Intelligrade is just one incredible example. Thank you Internet Watch Foundation (IWF)

MVPs shouldn't go to the bin, unless the business pivots to something else. Way too often I've seen agencies & devs building MVPs in a 'poor' way (and that's a nice way of putting it), because 'who cares, it will go to the bin anyway when you get PMF and fundraise'. I disagree. There's absolutely NO reason that your MVP should go to the bin, unless your business model or product change dramatically. And even then, a lot of boilerplate (like signup, subscriptions management, emails, etc) - can and should stay the same. If done right, that should be a given, with 0 extra effort on the dev side. If someone's quoting you to do a poor job, don't work with them. You can stay agile & lean (as a startup should) without compromising on quality, and forcing yourself to rewrite the next version of your app. When you're investing in something, especially at an early stage when money is tight, it's important to NOT buy garbage.

Test Driven Development (TDD) is an essential tool for ensuring high quality and speedy development. But can we really understand the value of TDD if we haven't been burned by NOT practicing TDD?

"Engineers are expensive. Do you want them to be as productive as possible or not?" 🤯 Thanks to Abi Noda for a quote that I am going to be taking out to organisations as frequently as possible. While the argument in favour of Platform Engineering and DevEx isn't as simple as getting value from the investment organisations make in their people... it's pretty compelling! 🔥 Why would you not want to maximise the effectiveness of the clever people you employ? Having worked with high-performing platform teams I can confidently say that the mission above all others for platforms should be enabling value delivery. And when we have that mission it should be a no brainer for us to gain investment. 💰 Platforms can (and will) transform your business!
