In the first half of 2024, Britain’s High Streets witnessed significant closures, with pharmacies, pubs, and banks making up half of the 6,945 stores that shut down. This equates to 38 closures per day. Despite new store openings, there was a net closure of 12 stores daily, slightly higher than the previous year. Chemists, pubs, and banks were the hardest hit, while convenience stores and café chains saw minimal openings. The closures have impacted small business owners who had to adapt to online banking due to the loss of local banks and ATMs. The shift towards online services and retail parks is reshaping town centres, posing challenges for maintaining regular foot traffic.
