Our new report with Nuffield Council on Bioethics assesses the potential benefits, risks and appropriate role of AI-powered genomic health prediction (AIGHP) in the UK health system. While AIGHP could have some benefits within healthcare, there are significant risks concerning privacy and discrimination, as well as structural and societal problems that could emerge from its widespread roll-out for prevention at the population-level. The risks and concerns highlighted in the report relate to scientific uncertainty about the effectiveness of the emerging technology, privacy risks around the use of sensitive personal data on a mass scale, new forms of genetic discrimination (particularly in the context of health insurance), structural challenges surrounding NHS adoption of new technologies and a lack of evidence on public attitudes towards use of the technology. 📣 Last week the Centre for Sectoral Economic Performance at Imperial College London partnered with the Imperial Policy Forum to host a ‘HealthTech Bootcamp’, bringing together industry, policymakers, regulators, and local government representatives to discuss strategies for bolstering the UK’s health technology sector 🚀 This was the first of a series of sector-specific bootcamps, focused on CSEP's core mission to improve the competitiveness of the UK economy by promoting evidence-driven policies that drive growth, enhance productivity and support the development of high-growth sectors like health technology. This follows the new CSEP and ABHI HealthTech sector strategy, highlighting HealthTech’s £13bn Gross Value Added (GVA) in the UK. The report proposes targeted tax incentives, regulatory reforms, and closer collaboration with the NHS to accelerate innovation adoption. An AI summary (𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘰𝘯) states the report seeks to address rising healthcare demands, promote preventative measures, and foster innovation within the NHS. Key points include:  🌿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: improve health from lifestyle factors as well as treating sickness. 🏡 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹: provide care closer to home, tailored to local populations. 💡 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: create new partnerships between NHS, academia and industry to improve health outcomes. But we fed the AI Lord Darzi’s 2008 report. Not the one 16 years on… The 2024 investigation echoes many points from before, including "empower patients and staff”. “A recurring theme is that the recommendations of previous reviews have not been universally adopted”. This refers to maternal care, however the statement stands for other therapy areas. 𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝙞𝙨 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲? The evidence behind the analysis appears far more transparent. And a key focus is to unlock productivity using better technology, like harnessing AI. Is tomorrow's AI in danger of blocking today's urgently-needed investment in data science in healthcare?
