Why the UK Needs a Public Performance Dashboard for Government Metrics With the UK general election on the horizon, regardless of political views, here are my thoughts for whoever gets into power next. Picture this: a public dashboard for all government metrics, just like any decent organisation would have. Imagine if we could all easily access and track crucial metrics such as housing availability, NHS waiting times, and crime reduction efforts. Each of these metrics would have a RAG (Red, Amber, Green) status, making it crystal clear how well the government is performing in various areas. Not only would this increase transparency, but it would also allow citizens to see who is responsible for what. Just like in any well-run company, accountability is key. When performance is visible to everyone, there's a natural incentive to improve and deliver better results. Now, I know this is a bit of a pipe dream and might not happen anytime soon, but you can't deny it's a good idea. A public performance dashboard could be a game-changer for government transparency and efficiency. Let's hope the idea catches on, and we see some movement towards greater openness and accountability in the future. So, as we head to the polls, let's keep dreaming big and pushing for the kind of transparency that could truly transform our political landscape. Can your University website solve climate change? 1.8 tCO2e. That’s the carbon impact of our website. Roughly. We’ve had specialists in and they mapped everything out, from server to endpoint and everything in between. We’ve got recommendations we can follow that will have immediate impacts on our carbon usage and get that number even lower. So here's the challenge, can you use your institutional website to drive change enough to reduce the total carbon impact of your organisation? Big challenge! In the grand scheme of all the emissions the University generates, it makes up around 0.002% of the total. Hardly worth bothering about, bigger fish to fry elsewhere...right? But the good thing about your website is that it is high profile and used by just about everyone in the institution at least some point in their working week. So, if we can change their habits, and educate them in the process, then that wave of change might just save the world. GDPR did it for data and the accessibility regs are in the process of doing it for site design. Carbon impact is the next big tool in the toolbox to bring about institutional change. We need to cut the number of pages we’re storing? Great! More focused and purposeful content. We need to cut page weights? Fab! Fewer trackers, more optimised images and more efficient code. Our high traffic is the problem? No worries, we can focus, optimise and target campaigns more tightly by analysing our data. It’s almost if…and I’m being a bit radical here…that your internal web teams knew what they were talking about all these years…
