My ongoing transition As my business grows I decide to have some professional headshots. Jacqueline who owns Penn Road Studios in Beaconsfield was amazing. I met her at an Athena Networking meeting for business women. She helped me relax and produced some lovely photos. This one is the one I use the most. Although no longer working in corporate the pink jacket gives me that structure and professional feeling i wanted to retain. Part of my transition was about how I wanted to be seen by others. How I represented myself and my business brand. If you know me I wear a lot of pink. I love it. After wearing a lot of Black, Brown, Navy and Grey it is refreshing and light. I also still feel professional. These days I hardly wear a formal jacket but I feel first impressions count so always want to look my best. Operating in a professional way is one of my core values so no matter what I have on being professional is in my heart. Seeking Investment for Female Founders Should Not Be a Mammoth Task. I have been reading the Investing in Women Code Report 2024. It is positive to note that the journey to securing investment for female founders is gradually improving, with 58 new signatories joining the Investing in Women Code, bringing the total to 250 by March 2024. We hope that this will lead to better outcomes for women-led businesses. It's great to hear that organisations such as Invest in Women Taskforce are dedicated to making the UK the most supportive environment for female founders. Key organisations such as the British Business Bank, UK Business Angels Association, UK Finance, Responsible Finance, BVCA, and the Department for Business and Trade are spearheading this movement. As a women who benefited from financial support to start my business, I’m grateful to Lloyds Business & Commercial for providing the initial boost I needed and for continuing to support my journey through their various learning platforms. Happy Menopause Awareness Month. On the eve of it, was BBC's Panorama documentary "The Menopause Industry Uncovered" which really just focused on damming Dr Newson and her clinics with just a nano bit on supplements whose claims are often unsubstantiated with clinical evidence. It’s concerning to see hormones prescribed at such large doses without clinical evidence and of course hear the stories presented in Panaroma. On a human level you can’t help but feel for Louise, a woman who has done so much for menopause awareness and education, including training thousands of NHS doctors and clinicians on how to spot the signs and provide better consultations. I imagine those watching it on private prescriptions will be panicked and unfortunately, media coverage such as this can put back the hard work clinicians are doing to educate on effective treatments, including lifestyle. What the documentary didn’t dwell on is that Newson believes more needs to be done around individualised treatment. In a decade's time, will we look back and think that HRT prescribing was homogenised and antiquated? Ultimately, no real surprises from the program. If you go to private clinics they are independent and in some instances, this can mean unnecessary blood tests or prescriptions, and unregulated treatment. We need to be very careful though as most private clinicians absolutely abide by NICE guidelines and will send people away with no HRT - instead recommending lifestyle plans. I do hope this doesn’t create panic amongst HRT users or put people off considering HRT if they have moderate or severe impacts. Did you see it? What did you think? #panorama #menopauseindustry #hrt

"I'm just an average bloke." Not me, but the words of Adam Lacey earlier this year when we met to discuss menopause in the workplace and how companies can better support women at this time of life. He's anything but average but his point was he knew nothing about menopause, he didn't know how to broach the subject, nor what he should say or how he could support either with his colleagues or at home. And then he asked, "Could Adora do a Back to Basics webinar for men so they could come along and just learn a few things and ask the questions they have always wanted to but never have?" And actually, he's not the first man to ask us this. Over the past few years loads of wonderful men have told us they want to support and help but are unsure what this looks like. So I said, "Of course. And I'll invite my fantastic co-founder Ed Smith - four years ago he knew nothing about this either. 79% of women are self-funding their start-ups - why is that? 💡 A new report from Small Business Britain sheds light on the reality many female entrepreneurs face. While women contribute £116bn to the UK economy, nearly 80% of female founders are self-funding their businesses. Why? The report highlights some key reasons: challenges with access to funding, financial skills, and confidence. For many women, the drive for independence fuels their entrepreneurial journey - 60% cited this as their primary reason for starting a business. But, that same desire for autonomy might be why so many hesitate to seek external funding. With over half never having applied for outside financing, it’s clear that more needs to be done to support women in business.
