By examining these themes, the panel aims to uncover the mechanisms through which African societies maintain continuity and resilience in the face of adversity. Panel organisers hope to bring together scholars from various disciplines to discuss how Bewaji’s insights illuminate the intersections of culture, philosophy, and socio-political activism. The CSC is open for applications between 10 September 2024 and 15 October 2024. The fear of stigmatization is one of the reasons why survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence do not speak out or report perpetrators. DIG. Frank Emeka Mba, mni, lists effective training of police, establishing a proper witness protection programme, and continuous sensitization of society as some of the ways to address stigmatization. He emphasized that we must all agree to curb the ongoing deafening and conspiratory culture of silence. We must learn to protect the survivors of SGBV. Perpetrators deserve the shame and not survivors. Watch him speak below:

This Week’s RouteWatche Crime Report: A Surge in Violence Across Nigeria The latest crime report reveals a concerning rise in violent incidents across the country. With 122 deaths and 62 arrests recorded between September 6 - 12, it’s clear that our communities are facing severe security challenges. Urgent action is needed to protect lives and restore safety. Among the most alarming incidents: 📌 12 murders and 10 kidnappings led the crime tally. 📌 On September 9, bandits attacked a hospital in Kaduna, kidnapping nurses and patients. 📌The tragic tanker explosion in Niger on September 8 resulted in 59 deaths, leaving the region devastated. Looking at the data, we see notable spikes in criminal activity on September 8 and September 9. On the 8th, the tanker explosion alone took 48 lives. The next day, kidnappings surged across Kaduna and other regions. These trends reflect an increasingly volatile security landscape that demands immediate, strategic intervention. A state-by-state breakdown shows the unique threats faced by different regions: Kaduna’s hospital attack left the nation shaken. New Publication Alert With great pleasure, I share my new article published in International Criminology with you. In this study, I explore whether police officers working in urban and rural areas in Ghana vary in their perceptions about factors that cause police corruption. The results show that police officers working in rural areas are less likely to regard economic factors and institutional (in)actions as causes of police corruption. Also, gender is an important determinant of factors that are considered causes of corruption irrespective of whether officers work in a rural or urban area. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has taken a decisive step by initiating an investigation into the claims made by VeryDarkMan regarding Bobrisky's alleged special treatment during a supposed prison sentence. Today we stand firmly in solidarity with whistleblowers and conscientious informants wherever they are who in exposing wrongdoing, corruption, and abuse of power, risk persecution and threat to limb and life. Here in Nigeria, the lack of robust whistleblower protection legislation leaves these brave voices defenseless and vulnerable to risks. Call for Panelists Gender and the Patriarchy in Nollywood Films Conference: The 9th Annual Conference of the Lagos Studies Association Conference Theme: Continuities and Discontinuities in African Studies Conference Date: June 17-21, 2025 Format: Hybrid (in-person, University of Lagos and Virtual) Abstract Deadline: November 25, 2024 Panel Organiser: Dr Adekemi Taiwo (Ekiti State University) Nollywood, Nigeria’s vibrant film industry, has long been a reflection of the country’s socio-cultural landscape. In recent times, a new wave of Nollywood epic films has offered a unique lens through which gender and Patriarchal order can be examined. There is significant shift in interrogating the roles of women in the society as portrayed by Nollywood industry in their presentation of “cultural epic” which can also be referred to as traditional films set in the traditional past of the thatched villages square and sometimes fanciful costumes of the past are used according to Haynes (2017:141). In most Nollywood films, women are given subservient roles which emphasize domesticity and dependency on men. In a patriarchal system, the male gender role has a more central and powerful part than the female gender role. Alola & Alola (2020) reveal that women are often portrayed in Nollywood films as defendants who are not independent but always rely on male-gender support. The panel shall explore the way in which the selected Nollywood films: Amina (2021), Anikulapo (2023), Adire (2023) Anikulapo: Rise of the Sceptre (2024), and Funmilayo Ransome Kuti (2024) portray themes of resistance and the subversion of patriarchy. This panel shall interrogate how women in history e.g. Queen Amina of Zaria, Fumilayo Ransome Kuti, Adire, and Awarun in Anikulapo are able to serve as empowered agents rather than mere support for male characters.  How can a comparative study of the films be done in terms of cultural resistance and resilience?  What about gender power and the portrayal of women?  Do the films challenge traditional gender roles and stereotypes? What of dominant narratives and stereotypes subversion? These films will be examined as agents of change, highlighting how they contribute to social commentaries, cultural preservation, and political activism. The discussion will also assess how the stories serve as strategies to challenge societal norms and foster transformation within their communities. We therefore invite contributions from scholars who are interested in the panel to send a 250-word abstract and short bio to [email protected] by 25th November 2024.
