There's been a lot of publications about the #3G switch off, and this one I found pretty interesting. Vodafone, who completed their 3G switch off in February this year highlight that data transmission over #5G uses 7% less energy than that of 3G. This allows the network to connect more devices (and people), with faster speeds, a more reliable service and using far less energy to do so. EE have also completed their 3G switch off, with VMO2 to follow and eventually 3UK who do not have a 2G network (which the MNO's are presently retaining for some voice and other services). #MobileNews #MobileNetworks #UKtelecoms https://lnkd.in/dcCYXeJi

Per site, this works out at £42,300 ($56,600), only a slight increase on the £40,000 ($53,500) Vodafone spent last year, when it reported capital expenditure of €866 million ($964 million) and had roughly 18,000 sites. They've even promised to spend £11 billion to blanket the UK in 5G SA over the next 10 years if permitted to merge with Three. It's not only #Starlink that is getting slower in the UK, the The Telegraph has an article briefly discussing slower mobile speeds affecting most users in the UK. Instead of shiny 5G making our smartphones more responsive, networks are throttling the user data experience to sweat the assets they have in the ground. Whilst investment is happening, there's only so much the networks can afford, especially as they slowly deploy 5G SA. EE is a good example, being the biggest network in the UK and partially subsidised by the UK Government's ESN project. I'm being somewhat selective, but comparing EE's monthly rolling SIM only contracts with unlimited data, costs £30/month but only provides 10Mbps, and £35 for 100Mbps. For unlimited speeds you have to go to a full 24 month commitment, minimum cost £42 a month. Update on ARIANE (Accelerating RAN Intelligence across Network Ecosystems) Quick reminder: a UK DSIT and Industry co-funded 18 month project, showing the power of Automation and AI for RAN. As a consortium, we're building and trialing a set of prioritised rAPPs and xAPPs across multiple RIC platforms using real world test scenarios, at BT's Adastral Park Lab. And there's more...the add-ons to individual application performance testing, are technical observations during application conflicts, a paper on standardising onboarding and portability of apps, performance benchmarking of the E2 interface for multiple RICs, and insights and recommendations to make the 1st 'dare I say it' quantum safe OpenRAN stack. Consortium includes Telecom Infra Project, Accenture, Amdocs, Arqit, BT Group, HCLTech, Reply, VIAVI Solutions, VMware @ Broadcom Read this presentation to find out more and to get some early insights.
