The IUA has joined forces with the National Cyber Security Centre to agree new guidance on ransom payments made by victims of cyber crime. The guidance aims to reduce the number of payments being paid to criminal groups using ransomware attacks. It is also supported by the Association of British Insurers and BIBA. Developed from a NCSC-sponsored research paper, the best practice guidance seeks to empower organisations to make informed decisions when faced with ransomware, and help minimise the disruption and cost of an incident. The IUA's Director of Public Policy Helen Dalziel said: “The payment of ransoms in response to cyber attacks is on a downward trend globally. Businesses are realising that there are alternative options and this guidance further illustrates how firms can improve their operational resilience to resist criminal demands.” https://buff.ly/4bzd8UY

I find this recent bit of news fascinating; as the use of AI tooling increases and automated solutions become ever more popular, these situations underscore the importance of combining screening solutions with experts in due diligence (DD) and intelligence gathering. Following on from a memorandum of understanding signed in September 2023, Janes and Systematic have now signed a further agreement to help with the integration of Janes’ data into Systematic’s SitaWare Insight intelligence and decision support tool. SitaWare Insight is now able to receive data from Janes’ Intara Foundational Data via an application programming interface (API), giving users access to critical equipment data and information within the SitaWare Insight interface. Janes’ Intara Foundational Data is searchable when loaded into the Data Lake in SitaWare Insight. As a result, users of SitaWare Insight can now benefit from a fully integrated intelligence workflow on a single screen. The development of the API serves as a starting point for further integration of additional Janes data in the future to increase the understanding and assessment of the battlefield. Systematic’s SitaWare suite allows the seamless integration of a wide range of C4ISR data and intelligence to deliver a comprehensive common operational picture to battlefield commanders – from those in a headquarters or joint operations centre, to vehicle-mounted troops and units on the ground. SitaWare Insight is a complete repository of data used to support military headquarters and intelligence units with their operations in the intelligence cycle, providing an integrated digitised solution to ensure that all the data available on the battlefield can be utilised by commanders and planners to make informed decisions. In combination with the SitaWare suite, equipment data can be easily shared across the battlefield, allowing for rapid threat analysis and assessment to be undertaken by commanders at all levels. Preparing for a career change from the Armed Forces? Considering a move into Financial Services and Risk? Whilst I'm not actually (yet) working in the sector, here are the top three books I've found useful as I look to try and secure a role in Operational Risk in FinServices after a 20 year career in the Army: All you need to know about The City by Christopher Stoakes Ltd. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to learn how banking works quickly in my opinion. From how stock markets actually work including short selling and rigging to understanding derivatives and securitization. With short sections of text to explain the terms you need, absolutely ideal. Operational Risk Management in Financial Services by Elena Pykhova. if like me you're considering a role in Risk or Compliance this is by far the most comprehensive manual I've found. It's helped me understand the 3 Lines of Defence and the common characteristics you might encounter from people working in each area, as well as understanding how to benchmark, identify key risk indicators and set a risk appetite. This book will 100% help you to translate military experience and transferable skills. Noise by Daniel Kahneman. A left field choice as it technically doesn't have much to do with Financial Services. But in my opinion, if you want to be good at managing risk and understanding the human factors that affect decision making you have to read this book.
