The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India, plays a pivotal role in this realm, setting benchmarks that guarantee product excellence. During a recent conversation with The Free Press Journal at the FPJ Dialogues on Wednesday, June 19, Sanjay Goswami, the director-general (Western Region) of BIS, highlighted the organisation’s pivotal role in safeguarding consumer interests and promoting a culture of quality. The challenge of consumer awareness regarding a basic minimum quality of any products they purchase is a critical part of the work of the BIS, said Goswami If you’re buying gold jewellery, for example, you can verify its authenticity by simply entering the Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) number in the BIS-Care mobile application to see where it was hallmarked and certified,” Goswami explained. The app, a key initiative for consumers, enables citizens to check authenticity of products such as hallmarked jewellery, electronic products, and any other ISI-marked products. “Consumers can lodge complaints through the app as well,” he added. The Economic Survey 2024 has underscored the critical role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India's economic fabric. The survey reveals that these enterprises navigate a complex landscape fraught with challenges. Access to affordable and adequate finance remains a persistent obstacle, hindering growth and expansion. Moreover, the issue of delayed payments from larger entities is a chronic problem, disrupting cash flow and impacting operational efficiency. The rapid pace of technological advancement necessitates significant investments in digital infrastructure and upskilling, which can be a daunting task for smaller enterprises. To gain deeper insights into the specific challenges faced by MSMEs, we conducted a survey of 200 firms from diverse manufacturing sector. It offers a granular perspective on the key areas where MSMEs have expressed a strong need for government support: • Improved access to finance: With 84% of respondents facing working capital constraints, MSMEs expect the government to create an environment that fosters easier access to credit and financial resources. • Timely payments: Given that 92% of respondents encounter delayed payments, there is a clear expectation for government intervention to ensure timely payments from larger enterprises and to provide financial support during payment delays. • Market expansion support: To assist the 73% of MSMEs seeking to expand their customer base, MSMEs expect the government to provide market intelligence, support export activities, and facilitate access to domestic markets. • Technological advancement: Recognizing the importance of technology, as indicated by 65% of respondents, MSMEs seek government support in the form of digital literacy programs, financial incentives, and improved digital infrastructure. • Business continuity: Although not having much expectations from the government, Around 32% of businesses are working towards bringing in the next generation to take part in their operations. Was just going through the data as published by Counterpoint for Q3 2024 for the Indian Smartphone market. It gives both the value and the volume shares of the brands in Q3 2023 and 2024. I did a ratio analysis of the value share for Q3 and Q4 by dividing the value share by the volume share. In case the ratio of value share divided by the volume share has gone down YoY, my derivation is that the ASP of the brand has gone down. If it has gone up, the ASP of the brand has gone up. Here is what the table of ratios looks like for Q3. Brand 2023 2024 #Vivo. 0.84 0.80 #Xiaomi. 0.49 0.52 #Samsung. 1.31 1.44 #Oppo. 0.88 0.81 #Others. 1.17 1.22 The ratio also kinds of gives a brand’s price positioning with a lower figure reflecting their lower positioning and a higher figure a higher positioning. From a price positioning aspect the data looks fine though I feel Samsung should be lower. What the data shows based on my above-mentioned theory is that the only brands where the ASP seems to have gone up in Q3 YoY are Samsung by close to 10% and Xiaomi by 6%. Vivo ASP has gone down by 5% and that of Oppo by 8% approx. I think the data favors Samsung in value share. Based on my feel, both Vivo and Oppo should be gainers. Unless there is something I am missing in my calculations or the share data is flawed, this is a bit difficult to digest. However, if both are correct Vivo and Oppo have something to worry about. As an afterthought, one thing which could have impacted the ASP for Vivo and Oppo could be shortages of their entry premium and mid premium devices. Frankly under normal circumstances, I would expect the ASP of all brands more so Vivo and Oppo to have gone up QoQ. The Godrej Enterprises Group has a refreshed brand identity. https://lnkd.in/gMmH-YEy Without the press release about the change in identity (from 3 colours to purple that reflects the many values and ambitions of the group!), I wouldn't have even realised that the Godrej identity had changed. Would you? I guess that is probably reflective of how little Godrej shows up in the media and in my stream. Retaining a connection with the founders is great, but a mere colour change seems too cosmetic to even be noticed. I know the group has always been low-key and media shy, but this seems too subtle even by those standards! What do you think? The film announcing the change could certainly have done with a less bland-sounding voiceover and one that was more enthusiastic-sounding about the change and the future. Also, the "unlocking" bit of the film is such a strong link back to locks, Godrej's early manufacturing mainstay. Godrej has long moved beyond locks to becoming a conglomerate with diverse businesses. The film was an opportunity to focus on those and the future rather than hold on to a facet of the past. Also, "locking the future/possibilities" is by itself quite a hackeyed corporate way to speaking about the future. What do you think? Hoping that the group has a lot more planned as the new identity takes root and its communication reaches more people in the coming weeks and months.

Here are some interesting macro level data points of the beauty and personal care industry in India, with some references and comparisons with GCC ...... -This industry is rapidly expanding into a usd 28 billion opportunity in India by 2030. Brands are increasingly adopting multiple strategies, combining online and offline presence to reach a broader audience. -There are some interesting case studies and stories of brands that started very humbly and have now become industry juggernauts. -Very interesting to study that this growth is being driven by millennials. Millenials in India represent 34% of the country’s population. Millenials also have significant purchasing power by India standards. They are primarily responsible for propelling these brands onto a major-growth trajectory. -The upgrade of "the second level of India" into mass-prestige or masstige products presents a substantial opportunity for growth in this sector. -India’s per capita spending on Beauty and Personal Care products currently stands at $14 compared to $313 in the US, $130 in uae and $38 in China. -With increased exposure to global fashion and beauty trends through social media and the internet, teenagers in India are becoming more conscious of their appearance and grooming. -A distinct characteristic of Gen Z is that they are open to experimenting with brands. -However, user retention will play a key role in unlocking the next phase of scale for these brands. To achieve this, introducing out-of-the box products with a shorter turnaround time will be essential. -To give a comparative picture, just the global fragrance market (which is but a part of the beauty and personal care segment) is expected to be around usd 100 billion in another 2-3 years. Out of this, GCC itself will be about 10 percent in the same period (only in fragrance part) -In the UAE, the average man spends usd 83 per month only on fragrances, while the average woman spends usd 74.
