The global broadband market is rapidly evolving, with fiber subscriptions surpassing 1 billion and fixed wireless access (FWA) emerging as the fastest-growing technology. 🚀 Fiber now accounts for 69 percent of all fixed-line services, and its dominance is projected to continue, reaching 77 percent of the total connections by 2028. Notably, Asia and Oceania lead the way in embracing fiber, with a staggering 92 percent of broadband subscriptions utilizing this technology. 📡 On the other hand, FWA is making significant strides, driven not only by 5G but also by its forecasted compound annual growth rate of 16 percent over the next four years. 📈 As a result, 5G FWA is expected to become the leading technology in 25 markets by 2028, particularly in Africa and a few Pacific Island nations. It was great to speak with Capacity Media - a techoraco brand recently about the pivotal point the UK has reached in its 5G journey. While 5G coverage has improved significantly in recent years, we’re still trailing behind other countries in fully leveraging its capabilities. To truly harness the benefits of 5G, widespread availability of standalone (SA) architecture, paired with widespread mid-band spectrum coverage, is crucial. This "gold standard" of 5G unlocks a range of new applications that non-standalone deployments cannot match. A key advantage is network slicing, which allows operators to create multiple virtual networks tailored for enterprises, broadcasting, gaming, and more – all on a single physical infrastructure. Yet challenges remain in bringing the value of 5G SA to society and businesses at scale. Collaboration with government to simplify and accelerate planning and access will be key to overcoming these obstacles, and ensuring the UK doesn't miss out on the immense economic benefits of widespread 5G SA adoption.
