Consultancy work can be isolating if you choose as you don’t have that ready-made network of colleagues to rely upon, something I’d not given any thought to when I left my last permanent employer in 2017. I’m self-sufficient but gain from collaborating with others beyond shared delivery goals, so I took action and created my own network – and I’m still going. Loving the Kenergy from one of our brilliant volunteers at BA Lufe 💙💚 I totally agree with what Kenny has said. I self-funded the BSC International Diploma in Business Analysis many moons ago and it opened a door into a job purely on this basis alone, because no one else in the team had the qualification (although I like to think there were other qualities my manager liked too!). As they say, “control the controllables” and organise your own self development!! Consider paying for it yourself if your employer won’t (depending on circumstances and benefits youlll get from the course). I’ve been told this week I don’t need to go on an ‘Agile Fundamentals’ course (which may be slightly true), but on the other hand, what’s wrong with a refresher? Or knowing how this organisation is applying it? So I’m doing it. And I’ve got a Product Owner course coming up soon too which will help reinforce my current role. Today's Scottish Budget included several key points that will impact SMEs across the country: 1. Business Rates– The government has confirmed a freeze on the poundage rate for 2024-25, providing some certainty for businesses facing cost pressures. There are also measures to support businesses in sectors hardest hit by rising costs. 2. Investment in Infrastructure – Significant funding has been allocated to support green energy projects, transport infrastructure, and digital connectivity, which could create new opportunities for growth and innovation in various sectors. 3. Support for Innovation and Skills – A continued focus on upskilling the workforce and funding for R&D initiatives reflects the Scottish Government’s commitment to boosting business innovation and competitiveness. 4. Taxation – While the Scottish Government maintains its position on higher income tax rates for top earners, businesses may need to navigate the potential impact on consumer spending and workforce mobility. For SMEs, the freeze in business rates and continued investment in infrastructure and skills development are positive steps. Confirmation of Payee is live on TSB online banking! We’re pleased to be part of the leading group of banks making this new service available to our customers after significant work across the banking industry. Confirmation of Payee helps keep customers safer when making one-time payments, adding new payees, or editing existing payees for domestic transactions. It checks the account holder name a customer enters against the actual name on the receiving account and provides either a 'match', a 'partial match', or a 'not match' prompt to the customer. This is another tool to help customers avoid scams, but it’s important to remain vigilant and alert. Does your bank app have an "emergency banking mode", so that when all else fails, their basic offering keeps operating? No, is the answer. If you're banking with an incumbent, the answer is almost certainly no. They've got enough trouble trying to keep the lights on with their primary systems. If you're banking with a neobank, the answer is generally going to be 'no' as well. Most of them don't have anything anywhere near the scale of what Monzo Bank has built. Here's their VP of Engineering Thomas Leitch discussing their approach.

Fair play to Monzo Bank 👏 Industry first security features rolling out in the coming weeks 🥷 New “known locations” feature will give customers the option to choose a location, like their home or workplace, that they need to be in when transferring money or withdrawing savings over a certain limit. Customers can also choose to invite a trusted friend or family member, who also has a Monzo account, to be notified before they send or withdraw money over a chosen limit. That person can then review whether they think the payment looks safe or is suspicious. A third new security feature whereby customers can choose to authenticate a payment by getting a “secret” QR code sent to a different device. They then have to scan the code through their Monzo app for the transaction to go through. It’s great to see Monzo trying to “outpace” the tactics of fraudsters by rolling out new in-app security tools. #FinTech #Banking

Starling Bank to be valued at £10 billion through global deployment of Engine Starling Bank could reach a valuation of £10 billion thanks to the global rollout of its Engine software, according to Chrysalis, the bank's second largest investor. eNGINE allows companies to create digital banking products that can significantly increase Starling's revenue. It is predicted that Engine can attract 40-50 customers, significantly increasing annual revenue. In 2023, Starling's pre-tax profit rose to £195 million, six times higher than the previous year. Countless press articles over the past few days covering Monzo Bank posting its first annual profit of £15.4m since launching in 2015 (including this latest one from the Financial Times below) The business is now valued at $5.2b. Lot's of questions (mostly dodged!) about the potential of a London listing or the prospect of a US listing with a growing US focus. Also confirmation that it’s in the early stages of expanding into the broader European market via a new base in Ireland which is exciting. The company said that it expects to grow its customer count to 11 million in the coming year under the leadership of TS Anil. The UK neobank scene appears to be thriving which is great. We currently manage more than 40,000 retail investor positions in Monzo from when they invested in the company between 2016 and 2018.
