Thought I would post a small update on our Net Zero path. International Moving Company Donates £1,511 to the Gorilla Organization Charity as Part of their Sustainability Commitment Burke Bros Moving Group, one of the UK’s leading international movers, have raised £1,511 for the Gorilla Organization charity through their commitment to net zero and being certified PAS2060 carbon neutral. In 2022, Burke Bros began their journey to net zero, by measuring their full carbon footprint, building a plan to net zero and becoming the world’s first PAS2060 carbon neutral removals and storage company. They have a target of becoming net zero by 2040, 10 years ahead of the UK backstop. As part of the PAS2060 Carbon Neutral certification, a globally recognised standard for carbon neutrality, Burke Bros raised £1,511 and nominated The Gorilla Organization as the recipient; donating £1 for every tonne of CO2 emissions they have offset. Founded in the early 1990s, The Gorilla Organization, supports the anti-poaching patrols created by the pioneering primatologist Dr Dian Fossey. Nowadays, as well as helping to safeguard Africa’s critically endangered gorillas, the charity’s projects have transformed the lives of some of Africa’s poorest communities. The organisation, as well as supporting ranger patrols, also run projects which include organic farming, tree planting and gorilla-friendly beekeeping. All of these give impoverished communities the opportunity to earn a sustainable income without having to rely on the natural resources found in the gorillas’ forest home and in turn, conservation of the natural habitat helps to protect the planet. This vital donation will help equip forest rangers to track and monitor gorillas, promote sustainable livelihoods through organic farming and educate children about gorillas and the importance of environmental conservation. We are committed to retaining the PAS2060 Carbon Neutral certification, until we reach the target of Net Zero in 2040. When we learnt that we had raised £1,511 in a charitable donation through our certification, we nominated the Gorilla Organization as in 2014 I visited the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda when I trekked for 8 days and met the Nkuringo gorilla family. The cause will always remain close to my heart and furthermore gorillas also inhabit and help sustain tropical forests, which are critical ‘carbon sinks.’ Protecting gorillas indirectly supports efforts to combat climate change by preserving these forests.

#CABIE : four and a bit months in to the DEFRA Common User Charge scheme - what have we learned? Actually, quite a lot...and it's not all good I'm afraid. Let's be clear, we are big big fans of SPS checks. The work DEFRA and Ashford Port Health (to name but two agencies) do is much appreciated and keeping us and our farming industries protected is valuable work indeed. However, we're not big fans of the charges and can think of a number of ways to improve the flow and reduce the costs. This is screaming for a trusted trader scheme and we will continue to 'bang that drum' along with our esteemed colleagues in the Trade Facilitation Commission. Good to see the idea is being considered – the next driver shortage is sure to hit us soon. I'm incredibly proud of the strides we've made at Tap'in, particularly with our Warehouse Management System (WMS). Something we used to struggle with was keeping on top of the constant paperwork. Having to print out order forms and manually cross off picks and dispatches as they moved through the warehouse was really hindering our efficiency. So when we looked into an automated WMS and found Clarus WMS, it sounded like the perfect solution. This intuitive system has transformed our operations, helping our team to be quicker and more accurate in their work. Something I was worried about was the shift in practices for the team, for them to learn a completely new system to do their jobs. I was nervous about the drop in productivity during the transition period of switching from analogue to digital. Thankfully, the Clarus WMS was easy for the whole team to learn, and everyone has embraced it wholeheartedly. While the actual interface was easy to use, the features are what have really made a difference to the warehouse team. And it keeps all information in one location. By having all the information our team need at a click of a button (rather than it all living in someone's head!) it streamlines our operations by taking pickers directly to product locations, saving valuable time and reducing the need for constant managerial queries. David, our then warehouse manager, now Ops manager, summed it up perfectly: "Clicking one button and not looking through 10 Excel sheets to find information!" Thanks to this efficiency, orders go out faster, and our customers receive their products even sooner. This has been a significant step in helping us grow and diversify, aligning perfectly with our goals for the year. 🚚

Urgent reminder: The next phase of the Mayor of London’s Direct Vision Standard (DVS) takes effect in a few days, on Monday 28 October ⭐⭐⭐ Logistics UK and the RHA (Road Haulage Association) are urging businesses to check if their vehicles require a permit to continue operating in London. HGV fleets over 12 tonnes must demonstrate compliance. Vehicles must either have a three-star safety rating, as specified by Transport for London (TfL), or be equipped with the Progressive Safe System (PSS). Failure to comply could result in a £550 penalty charge notice, and businesses may be prohibited from operating in the capital. If PSS installation can’t be completed before enforcement begins, operators can apply for extra time, provided the work is booked in advance of Monday (no applications will be accepted after 11:59pm on Sunday 27 October). UK launches £8m fund to accelerate smart shipping The UK government has launched an £8m Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund to advance the use of automation and AI in shipping. Funding will be used for feasibility studies to encourage the development of new technologies and the refining of existing systems, such as self-driving boats or ports using automated systems. The move is intended to boost the economy and support coastal communities, while also forming part of the government’s broader plan to decarbonise shipping, especially through use of advanced technologies. Lord Davies, maritime minister, said: “Using AI and cutting-edge technology to make boats smarter and transform port operations is part of our plan to decarbonise shipping, enhance safety for our seafarers and help grow the economy. #shipping #logistics #ukgov #supplychains #portoperations

Delivering an Ethical and Sustainable Supply Chain Next week at the The Emergency Services Show show, I’m looking forward to meetings with our approved St John Ambulance suppliers to discuss what they are doing to ensure that their supply chains are ethically and sustainably sourced. At St John Ambulance we have - - Removed plastic wrappers from first aid consumables by the implementation of medical grade paper wrappers. - Implemented recycled plastic first aid boxes. - Reduced extonox cylinder deployment by 50% with the support of alternative pain relief including the implementation of Penthrox. Entonox contains nitrous oxide gas which contributes significantly towards global warming. We aim to reduce our Entonox cylinders by a further 50% before Christmas. - Implemented a service delivery uniform from a supplier that is focused on delivering high ESG standards with a robust carbon footprint reduction plan across its supply chain. - Reduction of plastic wrappers and packaging from our training resources. - Improved our vehicle fleet including the introduction of electric vehicles. - Implemented Electronic Patient Records delivering improved governance, while significantly reducing our printing, distribution, collection and filing of paper records. - Requested and documented our suppliers ESG and Netzero plans. - Worked with internal partners to change kit lists to reduce waste and weight. - Reducing the weight of our equipment has supported reduction in vehicle fuel consumption. - Provide guidance and training regarding to our people environmental sustainability Can we do more? We’ve been analysing the requirements for a potential customer, and the behaviour of their incumbent supplier can only be described as sloppy. 🤦‍♀️ Freight costs can be a business’ second-largest overhead after wages, so choosing a freight management partner can be fraught with risk. Customer anxiety is understandable.    On our side, the 4PL sales process can take many months, or even years, as customers often struggle with the fear of making a bad decision. Better the devil you know...    But on the flip side, it can also save customers a significant amount if they take the time to do a comparison.    Most freight management suppliers, EFS included, will usually perform a free analysis of customer requirements, services and costs to determine if they can do better.    And while I don’t know if our competitors will try to undercut any agreement, if a prospect is on a good deal somewhere else, we’ll congratulate them and tell them they should stay exactly where they are. It’s not good for us, or the customer, to be cutting corners and scratching for paper thin margins.    We’re currently analysing the requirements for a prospect who has gone to market after many years of loyalty to a freight manager with a household name. And frankly, I’ve been disappointed by the poor attention-to-detail and lack of care on display.    The customer is set up with the wrong carrier for their freight needs and is being charged unnecessarily for additional handling. Charges that would not exist if a suitable carrier had been assigned. Unfortunately, it’s been going on for years. It’s neglect, plain and simple. 😬    Our philosophy has always been customer first. We want to be the best, not the biggest, so this sort of thing makes me pretty grumpy. It’s probably coming out in the tone of this post.    Maybe customers need a freight comparison website like Compare the Meerkat...? 🤔    Maybe it could be called Compare the Manifest. 😉

We all have a personal "capacity" before we break down - whether it's your body becoming ill, telling you to take it slow. Sensory overload in your mind forcing you to step back and take deep breaths or overwhelming situations (that normally isn't overwhelming) .... LISTEN TO YOUR CUES! Break big tasks down into smaller tangible tasks, keep an updated "to-do" list on your desk and learn to delegate "unimportant" matters to your capable team. Ultimately taking small, but effective, steps every day to reach your goals! 💪

How can a country aiming to meet net-zero targets price out of the market a way to quickly move post from one part of the country to the other, and move to trucks that are less efficient?? The Royal Mail has for some time reduced its commitment to next-day delivery for 1st class post, and with price increases all round there are so many consumers that accept simply paying for 2nd class and slower services...but rail is more than able to effectively deal with that. Then the politics sets in... Apparently only 3% of post is moved by rail... Stunning. Apparently trucks will be cheaper for that 3%.... Stunning. If we have inefficient rail, and high cost of provision, then we can't make the most of it. Passenger rail sees this as well, with astronomical pricing that means general travellers simply can't afford to make a decision that is better for the environment. So much money is wasted on public services and yet one that could contribute on many grounds is just left to be cost-uncompetitive? #logistics #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #railfreight

Yesterday’s NashTech Supply Chain resilience round table was a dynamic and thoughtful discussion. A sincere thank you to our keynote speaker, Vice Admiral Andy Kyte CB FCILT CB FCILT, Chief of Defence Logistics, for sharing his candid and insightful perspectives. And an equally heartfelt thank you to West Midlands Region (WMR) - CILT(UK) a vibrant and active collective, for driving and championing these important sessions that are shaping the face of collaboration. Richard Atkinson CBE expert hosting and facilitation ensured all the voices were heard. After 8 months at Babcock International Group I am still joining the dots and conversations I had with Rebecca Ryan and Luke Myring pointed me in the direction of activity in Babcock - Land sector and Babcock - Marine sector that is relevant to Babcock - Nuclear sector and I look forward to those follow up conversations. My key takeaway was Andy Kytes framing “what do we mean by resilience” and it is here I will be suggesting we focus some energy. By defining and agreeing what we mean by Resilient Supply Chains, a challenge perhaps best suited to independent impartial bodies such at the CILT (UK) King's College London and Aston University supported by the network, we can collaborate with purpose, that purpose being to improve resilience . There is much to do, but the body of experts invested in improving the status quo suggests this shouldn’t be an arduous, lengthy task. We all want to meet our #Net_Zero_Targets and apply new technologies to address the aging workforce and skills gaps. So why not work on them together, smarter, faster, more efficient.
