Entrepreneurs have a critical role to play to help us achieve a more sustainable future - but in the UK at least, they aren’t getting the support they need. For context, Small Businesses form 99% of all Businesses in the UK and account for more than half of our GDP. But as revealed by the ‘Green Growth’ research that BT Business and Small Business Britain have carried out with 2,000 small businesses, 67% feel that the UK Government is having a limited influence in helping them to understand and achieve its 2050 Net Zero Commitments. The findings from this research underscore the need for action to tackle sustainability challenges and provide more support for small businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprint. Read the latest sustainable ICT case study conducted by ICT carbon footprint experts Px3 Ltd with the University of Southampton here https://lnkd.in/ewvzgJ9J “The comprehensive information generated by Px3 has enabled us to baseline our end-user computing carbon footprint with details we never previously thought possible. It is clear that we already excel in ensuring devices are kept for as long as feasible which is important as the report shows that almost 80% of our ICT carbon footprint comes from supply chain emissions. Looking ahead, Px3 modelled the concept of including carbon footprint as a selection criterion for new device purchases. The results were staggering with a potential reduction of 48% in our carbon footprint available. Also, selecting low carbon footprint devices will reduce our energy consumption by 45% saving almost £1m in long term utility costs. This is exactly what our customers say, that they have found procurements to be far more successful when there is engagement with suppliers before starting the formal part of the procurement – that way they can better understand the sorts of features and innovations that are available on the market, and which of these can best help them. They can then specify these innovations when the formal part of the procurement is underway, resulting in a solution that better meets the needs of the authority. The response we've had to the below survey has been really interesting. There is clearly an appetite to transform the way in which patient care is delivered, and it is promising to hear from ICT managers and Digital Directors, being honest about their challenges, particularly around the following areas: * Lack of internal technical understanding and expertise * Restricted funding * The absence of strategic direction ^ These are all very relatable, very understandable challenges which get in the way of real 'game-changing' transformation. BBC is now reporting that in 2018 the BBC’s controller for entertainment commissioning had sufficient cause to have a 90 minute conversation with Gregg Wallace about his behaviour being unacceptable and unprofessional. Despite him technically being employed by a third party whose products in effect the BBC were purchasing. Isn’t that a really weird thing to do with an employee of a third party supplier? Wouldn’t you speak to a manager in the third party? Wait, why are you using a third party supplier that so readily puts your reputation on the line? That controller for entertainment commissioning appears to have had a promotion since that conversation. Their current salary is given as £290,000 - £294,999. Only £117,000 more than the Prime Minister. The BBC does lots of things right to be fair. I heard a news report this morning where I appreciated thier very careful use of language. They have published salary brackets like the one above. They do not treat themselves as above their own news reporting. However, leadership really does matter. As we have seen with the Post Office, are seeing now with the BBC, will see more of going forward. In today’s digital age, part of the job of being a senior executive is holding yourself and those around you to account such that you can hold your head high when your decisions are questioned in 5, 15 or 50 years time. I wonder where (not if) the next behaviour/reputation issue will emerge. Do you think there’s anywhere it couldn’t possibly be an issue?

Tech Platforms in enterprises are great, generally they promote reuse, standardisation and speed. Social media platforms in society are bad while they started good promoting community and connectivity, now they promote products, highly targeted content and generally lower mental wellbeing. Is GenIA (ChatGPT, Meta AI, etc) destined for the same fate?

Delighted that my dissertation has now been published in the Transformative Enterprise Research Group (TERG) as part of a working paper series on enterprise. The paper is focused on essential entrepreneurial traits for venture growth and provides some valuable insights for budding and established entrepreneurs. Insightful read of the day! 💡 To coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week, new research from our brilliant team at BT Group has uncovered widespread anxiety among business leaders about the pace of technological change in the workplace. Nearly 9 in 10 (86%) company directors and executives report suffering from ‘bytemares’: tech-related stress that’s severe enough to disrupt their sleep – with security and AI the top causes.
