With the date for the next UK General Election having been announced yesterday, I thought I'd have a look at what it would take to create an election results map using Power BI and the forthcoming Icon Map Pro. Well it turns out it's super easy! Bespoke #PowerBI Day 1 of 2 training delivered at Panth****, FS. For the day 1, we went through: 👉 Getting data from 12 data sources both on prems and cloud sources. 👉 Different techniques to clean and transform data in the PQ. 👉 Understand and Manage Snowflake and Star Schema Relationships. 👉 Understand the importance of Primary and Foreign Keys in Dimension and Fact Tables. 👉 Understand and knowing when to use DAX Calculated Columns and DAX Measures. 👉Create Fiscal Period-based calendar dimension table using DAX Calculated Columns including chronological ordering of Month, Weekday and Fiscal Period. 👉 Author tons of explicit DAX Measures including Time Intelligence calculations to track KPI's. 👉 Data modelling best practices. Final testing of Icon Map Pro for Power BI using some open planning data of Kingston from the London General Assembly. Checking that the conditional formatting for fill colours, line colours, line widths and transparencies are all working. I've also used Power BI's new slicer visual to create a quick and simple legend / selector, bound to the same conditional formatting. I really like to rhyme but not when writing DAX as every time I've tried, there's an error in the syntax. The more I read that the less think DAX and syntax rhyme... #DataAnalysis #DAX #SyntaxError #PowerBI

Undisciplined use of Kafka leads to poor quality data I was at Confluent’s Data In Motion event in London yesterday and this quote by Tim Berglund in they keynote caught my attention: "Undisciplined use of Kafka leads to poor quality data." That’s 100% true - not just for Kafka but for any data movement/integration tool. So, how do we use Kafka with discipline? We: 1️⃣ Design schemas that meet our users requirements 2️⃣ Implement change management on those schemas 3️⃣ Publish the in the schema registry for serialisation and deserialisation The producers of the data can then publish data that matches the schema, and the consumer can be confident that the schema won’t change without going through an agreed change management process. These can all be implemented with data contracts.

Databases, have you ever heard about them? A slightly opinionated paper about databases (SQL enthusiasts and NoSQL critics): “What Goes Around Comes Around... And Around…” If you ever wonder what “data models and query languages” are exciting out there and are looking for amazing explanations of each concept (key/value, document, graph, etc.) in 1-2 sentences, check this paper out! As we wake up in the UK this morning with a new government and prime minister, the news channels have their election maps showing the outcome in each constituency. Everyone, For those of you working in Power BI and embedding Power Automate flows in your reports, Microsoft has recently updated this feature so that different Power Platform environments can now be selected. This is an absolutely fantastic improvement. Previously any Power Automate flows used in your Power BI report had to be stored only in the "default" environment which is not a good practice. This also made working with other items, such as Power Platform solutions impractical (or if your teams had separate environments for development, production, etc).
