You’re working in Corporate Social Responsibility. What skills do you need to make a real difference?
I believe that companies need to make sure they understand their various activities in the sustainability space and the strategies behind them. ESG is different to CSR is different to sustainability. There should be a strategic intention behind each, and sometimes they can overlap (for example climate change sits very much in ESG, but reducing emissions in line with science sits in sustainability). Aligning with a standard, and assurance of data and narrative is critical to gain trust of external stakeholders and ensure that you’re credible.

What are the roles and responsibilities of a sustainability manager in a large corporation?
In my experience it is all of the above and... 1/ Set lofty but realistic ambitions grounded in science. 2/ Before you actually do point 1, there's a massive piece of work. To engage internal stakeholders, business leaders, functions, disciplines and the assets themselves. 3/ After the engagement the embedding of the "what" into business processes and strategic decision-making. 4/ Set targets related to point 1, monitor progress and report effectively. This is an iterative process. Companies need to understand their context, in order to prioritise their work, which in turn will have the biggest possible impact. Companies also shouldn't shy away from changing course if new evidence emerges that shifts priorities.

What are some ways businesses can use CSR to promote sustainable consumption?
The first thing that needs to happen is to define what “sustainable consumption” actually means. Unless you are factoring in planetary boundaries, it is by definition unsustainable. Unless you are factoring in fair labour conditions enshrining human rights across the value chain as well as including social norms such as paying all employees in the value chain a living wage, then again it is by definition unsustainable. Sustainable consumption is therefore meaningless unless it is defined.

What are the best ways to develop a long-term sustainability vision?
I've just seen an advert from a luxury German car brand - stating they're revolutionising their products by making them electric. They neglect to mention the fundamental truth. Which is that we need to be making & selling fewer cars, not more. That we need a fully functioning, integrated public transport system that is affordable. That we need to redesign cities away from "car focussed" to becoming "people focussed". But of course. They're a car-maker. And they want to sell more cars. And be profitable. And make money for shareholders. EVs aren't the solution. They are part of the problem. And until we see the full picture - you will not have sustainability.
