Some time ago, back in NHS days, I used to manually download my Fitbit running & fitness data, and put it on a PBI dashboard; basic stuff really. Soon I'm going to do the same, but via an API, and also create some fancy ML predictions off the back of it. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐊 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 - 𝐒𝐒𝐂𝐋 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 As ever, an informed and thoughtful blog today by Georgina O'Toole of TechMarketView. Though it has been mentioned in this and other reports of the apparently massive data breach, what many may not realise is that Shared Services Connected Limited (trading name SSCL) was carved out of the UK government in 2013, created as one of three (from memory, having been an external legal adviser to a bidder for what became SSCL) joint ventures between the UK Cabinet Office and third-party IT and business process outsource service providers. This model was considered a good thing at the time, though challenging for bidders and selected providers. Sopra Steria was selected as the JV partner for SSCL. Credit to Sopra Steria and SSCL, it started with a small group of central government customers, including the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and its agency, the Environment Agency, as well as the Cabinet Office and the Health and Safety Executive. The success of such shared services models was to be gauged from, among other factors, their ability to attract new government customers - from memory, this wasn't a foregone conclusion. Which SSCL achieved through the years until 2019, when the UK Ministry of Defence became a client. In 2023 the Cabinet Office sold its stake in SSCL and it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sopra Steria. What may not be obvious until now is that the UK government was itself a co-owner until 2023. That isn't to say that this had any effect on the reported breach, or the networks and information systems that SSCL has been using to provide services to its government customers. The Secretary of State for Defence is reported as saying that the MoD "was not responsible for failing to issue correct instructions, in terms of the contractual requirement to keep data safe". As we know, having contractual requirements to keep data safe is all very well, and pretty standard, especially in UK central government contracts, which are some of the toughest in the UK IT and outsourcing market. But, it's what happens - or, here, happened - in practice that will be more telling. As this TechMarketView report rightly says: "Of course, we will have to wait for the results of the review to determine, for certain, where the failings lie. But if it is deemed to have been negligent there will be wide-ranging consequences.". Sopra Steria is major service provider to the UK public sector. But let's not jump to conclusions.

Over half of UK companies hit by ransomware opt to pay... The survey of 3,100 IT and security leaders across eight countries found 53% of UK respondents experienced ransomware in the past year, up from 38% in 2023.    Of those hit, 59% paid the ransom, and 74% said they would do so again, despite 66% having no-pay policies.    Only 4% fully recovered their data, and fewer than 2% restored operations within 24 hours. While 23% recovered in 1-3 days, 19% took up to two months to restore operations. #UK #Business #Tech #Ransomware

Technically, I’ve been arguing the same point. Cybersecurity is securing things digital. Information security covers everything else that cyber doesn’t, e.g. physical security, hard copy data. For example, you can have a word document on your laptop, and you will use “cybersecurity” to protect that data. The second the document is printed, that data leaves the cyber world and enters the physical realm where those controls on your laptop will no longer need able to protect the data. I think “cybersecurity” is the buzzword and everyone is now using the two interchangeably.
