Episode 335 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Ernesto DiGiambattista, entrepreneur and investor. This episode is the 2nd of three interviews that were recorded live at Suffolk University Center for Entrepreneurship University with Suffolk alums. Ernesto has a unique background that hits the trifecta of experience. He spent time in senior roles with larger enterprise corporations, then he founded a venture backed company called ZeroNorth which was acquired by Harness, and he’s now an investor in early stage startups as Managing Director of Genesis Accel. Five big ideas from my The J Curve conversation with Sergio Furio, founder and CEO of Creditas 👇 1️⃣ Choose the right market Even the best talent can only thrive in a market with big potential. Focus on a large, inefficient market ripe for disruption—one that offers room to adapt, grow, and ultimately win. For Creditas, Brazil was that market, with Brazilians paying over 100% APR on loans. Rather than opting for a familiar market, Sergio saw a massive opportunity in addressing Brazil’s lending inefficiencies, creating a long-term value proposition with immense potential. 2️⃣ Embrace ‘positive naivety’ Entering new markets without preconceptions—what Sergio calls “positive naivety”—can drive innovation. Asking “why not?” and challenging norms opens doors to breakthroughs. As a Spaniard launching in Brazil, Sergio’s fresh perspective revealed untapped opportunities, like secured loans based on home, car, and salary collateral—an idea local banks had overlooked. Questioning the status quo enabled Sergio to disrupt the market and create value. 3️⃣ Fuel your business with energy Companies don’t fail from lack of money; they fail from lack of energy. Sustaining enthusiasm and a positive culture is essential for long-term survival. Early on, Creditas faced low revenue, but Sergio’s decision to keep up morale was crucial. By acting as a daily cheerleader, he ensured the team stayed motivated and resilient through countless challenges. 4️⃣ Choose investors as partners, not just funders Seek investors who are allies, not just funders—those with patience and operational experience. Sergio’s close relationships with investors like Manoel Lemos from Redpoint and Bill Cilluffo from QED provided more than capital; they offered valuable insights and support, helping him navigate tough times with a foundation of both financial and emotional backing. 5️⃣ Leverage being a solo founder Flying solo has its challenges but also brings advantages like faster decision-making. As a solo founder, Sergio made swift, unchallenged decisions that allowed Creditas to pivot effectively. The world is for those who dare. When Ander Michelena reached out to us to brainstorm and execute All Iron’s rebranding, the premise was clear: the name had to reflect Basque heritage. They say that knowing your roots makes it easier to navigate the future. With this in mind, we decided to delve into history and uncovered the story of Magellan's voyage. The second captain, Elcano, hailing from Getaria, assembled a crew of Basque sailors. Tragically, Elcano returned with only a handful of sailors alive from the hundreds who set sail, and the sole surviving Basque was Juan de Acurio. And btw, Getaria also gave us another genius: Cristóbal Balenciaga. History and creativity run deep here. Echoing what Acurio Ventures has explained since its launching, this rebranding is built on three core pillars: 1) Becoming truly international 2) Emphasizing resilience, determination, and teamwork 3)Daring to play I want to share a couple of extra details that haven’t come up before: the graphic system is all about the sea and navigation maps. So, we naturally leaned toward shades of blue, but we also played around with some complementary tones that really capture that innovative spirit of Acurio. It was an absolute pleasure to sit down with Joao Barbosa, co-founder at the world's leading corporate wellness platform Gympass(now rebranded to Wellhub) for the most recent episode of The J Curve. Five big ideas from our convo 👇💡 1️⃣ Startup pivot is not an event, it’s a process Base your decision on data, customer feedback and other validated learnings. Establish clear KPIs that will guide decision-making and define what should success look like. Be prepared to test and iterate and test again. Flexibility, adaptability and sensitivity to feedback is key 2️⃣ Building a MOAT, or competitive advantage is essential for a startup to compete and sustain growth In Wellhub case the moat is network effect. It’s difficult and expensive to build (CAC was huge) but at scale it represents a huge barrier to exit for corporate clients 3️⃣ Put a lot of thought into pricing model, especially if you operate in a B2B segment Early-stage founders frequently under-price their offering. VC investors do have hearts. We found that out yesterday. Jokes aside, yesterday we ran the first VC Bootcamp at the #SchoolOfFounders with legendary coach and author Jerry Colonna. Twenty of Spain's best VC partners spent the day at IESE Business School to reflect on the emotional struggles that building and investing in startups entails. It was a fascinating day, as we usually hear about the founder's side in our programs. One important insight I took away from this wonderful session is the need for investors and board members to be honest: ✔ Honest about how they feel when they show up for a meeting. (A simple Red, Yellow, Green check-in would work wonders to sync emotionally with the founder.) ✔ Honest about their fears, doubts, and insecurities. (Imagine a young VC partner saying to the founder: "This is my first investment. I don't really know yet what I am doing, and I feel tremendous pressure to perform. Can you help me figure out how I can be most useful to you and together help the company perform?") ✔ Honest about their motives for making a particular comment. ("I'm asking you this because I'm very concerned about my reputation if this goes wrong. I'm raising my next fund, and this would make it very difficult.") Nothing fancy. Not authentic, not vulnerable, simply honest as Jerry taught us. Sharing empathetically and, with good intentions, what's really going through your head. This alone would tremendously improve the relationship between investors and founders. (Of course, the founder should do the same.) In any case, it was a fantastic event, and I'm very grateful to Jerry for sharing his enormous wisdom and skillfully guiding us through the day. I'm also grateful to Paula Sancho and her team at Finaves for the idea and for gathering her investor friends. And extremely grateful to our VCs for showing up and sharing so openly. An incredible night of Pitch&Drink with P2S.vc in Lisbon! 🚀 On November 11, as Web Summit got underway, we brought together founders and investors for an unforgettable Pitch&Drink event, part of the Pre-Seed to Succeed program, created in partnership with I2BF Global Ventures, AltaIR Capital, Yellow Rocks!, and Smart Partnership Capital. The response was outstanding — with 740 registrations, including more than 150 investors eager to connect.
