As the week draws to a close, I've been pondering the vital role of teamwork. It stands as the cornerstone of success within our Home Instead SUR Group and resonates within all our local teams across Scotland. Encouraging a culture where teams freely exchange ideas and skills fosters innovation and enhances problem-solving capabilities, igniting a shared drive for success. At Home Instead SUR Group, we put teamwork to the test through plant care—a unique yet effective means. This test not only cultivates collaboration but also instills a sense of achievement, demonstrating that everyone, regardless of their green thumb, can contribute to nurturing something new. This week I visited our South Ayrshire and Kilmarnock team, who just 8 weeks ago told me they could "never" take care of a plant and it would be "dead within a week". During my visit they were bursting with pride as they shared how they had nurtured their Fiddle Leaf Fig collectively. Impressive! Now the baton has been handed to our North Lanarkshire and Glasgow East team, who just this afternoon have been set the test of nurturing their very own Monstera Deliciosa. As they build upon the dynamics of fostering a team approach, in a newly formed team, they will learn the art of: 🌱 Shared Responsibility: Taking care of a plant requires consistent attention and care, encouraging team members to share responsibilities and collaborate on watering, feeding, and nurturing the plant. 🌿 Communication: A healthy plant needs good communication! Team members will need to discuss the plant’s needs, schedule care routines, and ensure everyone is on the same page, fostering better communication skills. 🌸 Patience and Growth: Just like teamwork, growing a plant takes time and patience. Watching it thrive can be a rewarding experience that mirrors the growth and success of your team. 🌞 Stress Relief: Plants are known to reduce stress and improve mood. A shared plant can create a more pleasant work environment, contributing to overall team well-being and productivity. 🌻 Sense of Achievement: There’s a great sense of accomplishment in seeing a plant flourish. So many charities, hospices need our help. Here are my fundraising tips. Let’s call it GIVE ME FIVE. Take 5 items to Auction you choose but one item must be the one you think is unlikely to be of value. Donate monies you recieve to our NHS charity, local hospice or other charity. Go on bargain hunt. Contact the BBC suggest a programme that involves a 5 furniture charity shop items make over. From Faded to Funded. I have contacts at the BBC are you listening 🙂Students on Interior design courses maybe up for this, funds for your charity of year? . On campus of course with big bids for your transformations. 🙂 Book sales maybe seen to be an outdated idea but look for a 1st edition when sorting them for your charity shop. In 2013 I was Ambassador of the year for Carers Trust the Co op was the Corporate fundraiser. What a year for book donations. I remember the Co op in Meltham raising £600 from the secondhand book box. They still have a shelf now dedicated to books and customers can give a donation or donate books. Please share with other charities if you have someone who values books for your charity. Share 5 of your funding streams with others who are struggling. Please check deadlines for applications. I once forwarded on a large opportunity to receive funding to a development Manager new in post and she missed the deadline. Can’t be helped but that charity so needed the chance of funding. Remember sharing is good because after all the decision lies with the funders. This is the time of year when some Universities take applications for their Charity of the Year. Nominate yours and also please remember our students are happy if they have enough warning to help maybe provide students for a bike ride that your charity wants to put on speak to students Union. Sponsored canal walk with 5 Volunteers. You must ok this with Waterways. From Hebden Bridge to Brighouse finishing at the Fish and Chip restaurant in Brighouse hold a raffle and invite supporters to enjoy a meal with you pre book. Those who don’t want to eat bring a raffle prize for the charity to use at future events or on the day. Invite the press and make sure your just giving link is in the Newspaper and given when promoted on the local news in your area. Good Luck !!!

Having innovated in the NHS and implemented technologies, it is clear that users, especially the 1.3 million staff of the NHS, need bandwidth and capacity to deliver this. The NHS is typically running at 95-120% capacity, how do staff find the time to implement and embed change? What this really means is that any change implemented is not truly embedded. I will always remember the story of a n Obs and Gyn registrar that once told me it took him over 18 months to implement a simple change of soaking the blood of ladies that had had any ante or post partum heammorhage onto an inco sheet, so that the blood quantum could be measured rather than guesstimated (guesstimates were between 20-50% inaccurate) For an efficient system, delivering change alongside operating, it needs to be operating at 80% capacity approximately. We are at breaking point and still having to deliver change.

In the NHS, we often use the term "transformation" to describe routine improvements, but this study by Addenbrooke’s is genuinely transformational. It will enable children to receive tailored treatments at the right time for their condition, giving them the best possible start in life. More importantly, it will help reduce the prolonged and often difficult diagnostic journey that many families currently face. This is how we transform healthcare for the next generation! #Genomics

Some councils are charging self-funders substantial admin fees to arrange homecare for them. The Homecare Association talked to Ruby Hinchliffe at The Telegraph newspaper to explain the costs of delivering homecare and the problems caused by council and NHS fee rates which are too low. Central government investment in care has been too low for too long, driving councils to squeeze fee rates. Many homecare agencies rely on fairer fee rates from self-funders to remain afloat. If councils encourage greater use of section 18(3) of the Care Act 2014 in homecare, this will add to provider financial pressures. If we all want to live well at home when we’re old or disabled, we must make care an electoral issue. Now is a good time to influence your MPs and parliamentary candidates ahead of the general election. Successive governments have ducked the issue of social care. It’s time to hold their collective feet to the fire. 🚀 Healthcare insight 🚀 Maria Kane recently appointed joint chief executive of North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW), has shared her inspiring mission of forming a single hospital group within the next two years. With a focus on "patients first," Maria believes that fostering an inclusive environment where staff feel valued, autonomous and proud of their contributions is key to achieving this goal. This innovative collaboration aims to tackle shared challenges in workforce, estates, and finances. Combined, NBT and UHBW serve over 1.5 million people, employ 28,000 staff, and manage NHS budgets exceeding £2 billion. The trusts' Joint Clinical Strategy for 2024-27 is a testament to their commitment to shared improvement. Maria remarked, "We were competing for staff and resources, leading to varied care outcomes. By uniting, we're aiming for a common improvement language and a more equitable healthcare system." Under Kane's leadership, NBT has seen impressive advancements, from reducing agency expenditures by nearly 70% to significantly lowering diagnostic wait times. The trusts are not stopping there—plans include opening a new £49 million elective centre in Southmead by spring 2025, expected to increase procedures and cut waiting times drastically.
