Having worked in education over the last two decades, I’m deeply invested in the long-term stability and quality of education we provide to our students. With the recent appointment of a new HMCI and the new Labour government, we’re about to embark on consultation about potential changes to the EIF. While I understand the need for continuous improvement, it’s important to consider the implications of frequent changes in inspection criteria and expectations on schools, teachers, and ultimately, our children. Significant changes to the inspection framework have coincided with the appointment of a new HMCI: - In 2005, the Common Inspection Framework (CIF) was launched, creating a new standard in inspections (David Bell). - In 2009, CIF was revised to reflect shifting priorities (Christine Gilbert). - In 2015, further revisions brought in shorter inspections and an increased emphasis on data (Michael Wilshaw). - In 2019, the CIF was replaced with the Education Inspection Framework (EIF), shifting the focus to curriculum intent and quality (Amanda Spielman). While some adjustments were undoubtedly beneficial, they often led to an unstable environment where schools had to adapt rapidly to new priorities. The impact of each HMCI’s vision is understandable, BUT should the sector bear the burden of adjusting to new frameworks every few years based on the perspective of a single leader? Schools and trusts need stability, consistency, and a framework built on the enduring best interests of children, not the personal ambitions or philosophies of incoming HMCIs. Our collective focus must remain on what works for children and on supporting teachers to thrive in stable, predictable environments. Educational leadership is a privilege, and with it comes the responsibility to ensure that any change truly serves the broader good. Good leadership requires the courage to make difficult decisions when it’s in the best interest of those we serve, even when change is tempting or driven by strong opinions. Let’s prioritise the needs of our children and teachers over continuous adjustments. A stable framework that withstands the test of time will enable us to build the high-quality education system we all want to see.
