tell me you're a data professional without telling me you're a data professional... when I build brio train tacks, I build them only using track pieces. Once it's up and running then I will swap out pieces of track for the fancy bits i.e a windmill. Bespoke #PowerBI Day 1 of 2 training delivered at Panth****, FS. For the day 1, we went through: 👉 Getting data from 12 data sources both on prems and cloud sources. 👉 Different techniques to clean and transform data in the PQ. 👉 Understand and Manage Snowflake and Star Schema Relationships. 👉 Understand the importance of Primary and Foreign Keys in Dimension and Fact Tables. 👉 Understand and knowing when to use DAX Calculated Columns and DAX Measures. 👉Create Fiscal Period-based calendar dimension table using DAX Calculated Columns including chronological ordering of Month, Weekday and Fiscal Period. 👉 Author tons of explicit DAX Measures including Time Intelligence calculations to track KPI's. 👉 Data modelling best practices. Day 2 continues with lots of interesting topics. #PowerBI

Question for the Tableau people out there. Something that was possible, and I'm not sure if it remains possible... I want a dashboard on the server to be viewed via another (internal) application. All simple enough, use an iframe and display it. Yes, each possible user needs a viewer licence, but I have a solution to that. However, I don't want the users to see the dashboard on the server. The user needs View rights to see the dashboard in the app. I can put the dashboard in a project, and hide that project, so they can't find it via Projects. But if the user chooses to see Workbooks or Views via the Explore menu, the dashboard appears. Is there a way to set up the permissions to prevent the user viewing the dashboard on the server? Not relevant any more, but in a prior version of Tableau Server, it was possible simply by hiding the project. But a change to the server interface means that no longer works. #tableau #tableauserver

◼️Dark Mode is now available in Power BI Desktop!◼️ The Power BI September 2024 Feature Summary has just been released today and there’s one special, long awaited and much requested feature which has been announced - Dark Mode! ◼️ This means users can now personalise their data visualisation experience to match their preferences and working environment. This is great if you prefer a darker interface or if you’re working late into the night. Dark mode replaces all the chrome around the design surface with white on black text, instead of black on white. This can reduce eye strain, enhance focus and some will find this more comfortable to look at than default mode. I have had the pleasure of being named in the Raconteur | B Corp™ 'Data Leaders 25' list with 24 mah00sive names. Amazing to be on the list but even cooler that it is a reflection of the amazing data transformations I have been a part of and have had the pleasure of leading. Over the last 3 years at Grainger we have been made huge strides to be more insight led and drive value from the data that underpins the business. A few highlights: - - We have around 40% accessing descriptive analytics on a monthly basis, way above industry standard (BARC study) for a company the size of ours (25%). - Huge increase in customer satisfaction metrics - Moved from descriptive to predictive analytics - Increased performance related to repairs and maintenance - Driving procurement efficiencies through supplier & spend analytics - Using Proptech and analytics to gain a deeper understanding of how our buildings and amenity spaces are used - Key DQ issues falling - Increasing data literacy One of our company values is "Leading the way", and fair to say, especially within the property/real estate sector, we are certainly living up to that. Data literacy is the start, not the end. Data literacy has become the 'thing' recently, and for good reason. Companies have spent eye watering amounts of money building the data infrastructure and getting to grips with reporting, analytics. So now the question is, 'do the business know how to use the stuff we've given them'? Enter the data literacy programme. The future will go one step further. As hunger for disruptive technology increases exponentially, technical specialists will move closer to such disruptive tech as the market will naturally move this talent pool. Result - foundational expertise like Data Architecture will suffer an even bigger talent shortage problem than today. Solution - the end user will need to "self-architect" their data. They will need skills in running and maintaining 'the infrastructure', while tech/product teams drive the bottom line benefit for Boards and shareholders with the latest shiny toy. This in itself is going to require better Data Mgmt (incl. data architecture) tooling, but also better business-ready Data Management learning content targeted at the end-user, not the data professional. Requirements are key. I’ve been building data things for over 15 years and as we all know, getting clear and concise requirements can be difficult but it is key. At the weekend I was the one giving requirements… Question : How would you like to feel after your massage? My response: like I’ve been tortured Clear, concise and to the point and guess what… I got what I asked for.
