Despite a decrease in crime in England and Wales, a majority of Britons, 6 out of 10, believe that crime in the UK has actually increased in the past year, according to new polling by Ipsos UK. The survey also revealed that a significant 79% of Britons view crime as a major issue in the country. When it comes to their local areas, people are a bit more hopeful, with 41% considering crime and anti-social behavior a big problem. However, 43% admit to personally worrying about becoming a victim of crime, especially among those aged 18-34 (56%) and ethnic minorities (61%). Interestingly, 62% of individuals aged 55-75 are not concerned about falling victim to crime. In order to further reduce crime, the public believes that having more police on the streets, improved parenting, and longer prison sentences with no early releases are key factors. Despite this, 67% of individuals rarely or never see uniformed police officers patrolling their local areas, even though a similar percentage believes that having more police officers present would help combat crime and anti-social behavior. The approach to reducing crime differs among Conservative and Labour voters. Conservative voters lean towards initiatives like more uniformed police presence, longer prison sentences, better parenting, improved discipline in schools, and even capital punishment for murder. On the other hand, Labour voters focus on preventative measures such as enhanced parenting, increased youth activities, greater investment in mental health services, behavior change programs, and better support for drug and alcohol addiction. There is so much noise in bad data I can’t even😵 In this excellent article “Ensuring quality survey responses in an age of uncertainty” featured in Quirk's Media, Michael Booth, PhD brings up an important point that is often overlooked in data quality discussions (link in the comment 👇 ). Bad data is filled with noise, and although it may appear 'fine' when looking at it in aggregate, it lacks cohesion. This leads researchers to waste precious time hunting for a story that just isn't there. Your ultimate test is a cluster analysis - there is no way to get sensible segments with bad data. As Michael says “Why should you, as a researcher, care about data quality and go to the lengths required to verify that you are receiving high-quality respondents? Like, really? When data is bad it’s hard for you to do your job.” He also has the best illustration to explain noise in the data. 🙌 Researchers - what do you think? Did you see the BBC article earlier this week on the "death of the screamer"? The article breaks down how data has been used in football - and questions whether it is the analysts that are prompting a more conservative approach to taking shots at goal. Without having the numbers to hand, I've also seen how other sports have become slightly more risk averse. Hardly any serve and volleys in the Sinner v Fritz US Open Final last weekend, and more formulaic approaches to attacking phases of play - especially in the League version of Rugby - are both also likely cases in point of "playing the percentages". My colleague Andrew Wiseman has penned a blog in response to this article with a wider view on whether data stifles creativity, and makes the point that data and creativity have to co-exist for the former to be useful. In terms of the football screamer - perhaps it is becoming rarer, but then also are those shots that land in Row Z. Furthermore, maybe the definition of what makes a beautiful goal has just changed over time. The quality of pitches are generally unrecognisable from the days of Ronnie Radford, allowing for more beautiful passing moves, dribbles and build-up play. A brilliant summary of where we are with Consumer Duty and what Walnut is doing to help clients, by my colleague Becky. Key takeaway for me - we're not there yet. Approaches vary, culture change is a slow process, and there's more to be done on the BeSci front. As Nathan Long has suggested to me many times, the companies that fully embrace the duty in spirit will win commercially because they will be offering a noticeably differentiated level of customer service. So it's important to keep pushing ahead. Give Walnut a shout if you need help with your Consumer Duty implementation.
